Soekris R-2R DAC
« on: 23 Dec 2014, 08:47 pm »
I've been following this DAC for a while now and am looking forward to getting one going next year.  I didn't make the first batch but hope to be in on the second batch.

Here is a photo of the DAC

This is the orignal thread from DIY Audio http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/vendors-bazaar/259488-reference-dac-module-discrete-r-2r-sign-magnitude-24-bit-384-khz.html

This is a great summary of the really long DIY Thread https://hifiduino.wordpress.com/2014/10/12/r2r-for-the-rest-of-us/

Hopefully we can get some good info going over here at AudioCircle!  :thumb:

How do you know you didn't make the first batch?

I signed up a long time ago, at least I posted in the thread a long time ago, so I hope to get one at some point.

From what I remember, getting all the resistors is delaying production.

Soekris says the first 240 are assembled and in testing with the next 360 to come fairly quickly.

For people who are on the list this is what he is saying:

Based on my spreadsheet, everybody expressing interest for:

0.01% version before Oct 20 can get from first batch.
0.02% version before Nov 1 can get from first batch.
0.05% version anybody can get from first batch.

The products are on the European website and the US website should be ready for orders soon.  Here is a link to the US Website http://soekris.com/

I'm pretty excited for this to get rolling as it looks like an easy build with a big potential reward.

Very cool. Only issue I can see in some systems is the 1.4V output. May not be ideal,  especially with passive preamps.

It has its own volume control so it is a preamp for some....

Looks awesome, but there's no specs that can tell you how a DAC sounds.

Very true but a good start always begins with what we can measure.   This could be the best R2R DAC in years, here is a reminder why this is interesting in the first place http://www.mother-of-tone.com/conversion.htm

There's a bit more to it, but R2R represents some of the best DAC's ever made along with a handful of chip based ones.

I'll probably try it. I won't chump it out with a SMPS or crappy LM317 though.

I signed up for the .2% version a long time ago, so I should get in the first batch.
You can send him a PM to get in the 2nd, or maybe third batch.  I think now that he's in production, you won't have to wait very long.

Looking forward to seeing if this is better than my ES9018 DAC

The SMT resistors might have a little thermal distortion. Whether that's good or bad :dunno:

FYI, shipments have started in Europe.

They have to ship to the US distributor, so I expect the US shipments to start early next week.

I think anyone can order now.

My board is in the mail, delivery notice came today.

Some guys in Europe have already fired them up, and have them making music.

I think they are still working on the backlog, but they are in stock and shipping.

Anybody else going to buy one?

Relatively cheap, especially if it performs.

I already have an Amanero to connect to it as my source, just need a little power supply to generate +/- 12VDC and I should be making music.

Cool.  At some point, I may buy more of these to go active.  Be interested to see how it goes for you.
