Although everyone has different tastes in music, there are some tracks out there that most people will at least appreciate and be very impressed by.
Here are a few of the ones I am blown away by every time I hear them, regardless of the quality of the recording, although a good recording is the icing on the cake.

Paul Brady - The Island
Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares To You (Even though overplayed)
Joan Armatrading - Love And Affection
Bono and Clannad - In A Lifetime

There are lots more but I can't think of them right now.

Are you asking other people to post songs they think are universally loved regardless of a stereo's quality? Sounds like way too big a target to bother hitting. Like you said, so many diff. people, so many diff. tastes.

I can think of songs that just floor me, but I know a lot of other people wouldn't care about.

Or did you just want to promote your Irish taste in music? hehehe

C'mon Azryan, I know it is a big target but this isn't a finite medium. I am very interested in what others think are the knockout tracks. All of them. I don't care how many there are. :o
The only reason my list was so Irish is that I was listening to a few Irish compilations this morning when I posted.  :)

Kiss from a Rose is almost there for me too. It used to be but I haven't listened for a long, long time as I over played it.

Private Investigations from Dire Straits just came to mind.

BTW, a good recording is also important, but there are tracks that I am really into that weren't recorded well so I assume other will have similar experiences.

How 'bout them Irish? You've got to include U2, " With or Without You". A song worthy of Rock Gods, and Neil Young, "Cortez the Killer".

Dylan - A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall and Not Dark Yet
Grateful Dead - Stella Blue

There you go. Even though there are so many tracks out there, I don't think anyone has posted yet that I don't at least associate with. Adagio for Strings is definately one of mine too. U2 are definately a part of the list but there are so many I have been big into over the years. One that I currently go back to over and over is "So Cruel" on the Achtung Baby album. Kind of haunting.
I am going to be busy listening to any of the tracks mentioned here whenever and wherever I can.
Thanks for the input, Neil.

Nice to see a vote for Wishbone Ash! How about Mississippi Queen with  the inspired guitar of Leslie West,  beautiful economical licks and that killer tone.

FNT (Fascinating New Thing) by Semisonic is a great song.  If you have a few extra bucks, buy the "Great Divide" album... The lyrics are great.

Before they were Semisonic, they were 'Trip Shakespeare' who had some incredible lyrics that still blow me away.  Their music is not for everyone.

Byteme's post reminded me how good Paul Simon's "Songs From the Capeman" is (well except for the spoken interviews with the actual capeman). It's a kind of West Side Story about gangs and an actual killing, but in a doo-wop style (normally that doesn't appeal to me).

I lucked into a new vinyl copy from LP Now.
