"I bought a bunch of these midranges in 1998 and built a speaker system inspired by Brian Cheney's VMPS RM 40.   I used a dipole woofer with 4 of these planer magnetics on an open baffle arranged as a line source.  It was a fantastic speaker system.   I used it for at least 8 years.  In 2007, I had to downsize so I disassembled the speaker and stored the drivers.    I'm finally being honest with myself and I have to face the fact that I am fully adjusted to living with a rather compact home stereo system.  I am never going to find a use for these drivers, so I am selling them.

These are perfect for dipole use.  These midranges have a smooth flat frequency response from 250 hz to 10K hz.  There is a free air resonance around 160 hz so it is unwise to run them lower than 200hz.  They rolloff  at 10k hz. with a slow slope. They sound fine without the help of a tweeter for the very high frequencies.  Add a good tweeter if you want to add some sparkling high frequency "air" to the reproduced sound.  The resistance for each driver is 2.7 ohms according to my Fluke Multimeter.  I don't know the power handling capacity, and of course power handling is highly dependent on crossover design.  I don't know the sensitivity rating, but from my experience with them being powered by smaller tube amps I would estimate that they are about 88db.  I ran them for 8 years using a 6db slope crossover at 400 hz with no problems.

These are Level 9 Sound Design planar magnetic midrange PFT 150-50-3.  Each unit measures:

4" x8"x 3/8".  Zoom in on the photos to see the good condition.  No dings or dents.

I have long experience with shipping speaker drivers.   I will pack these with care to insure that they suffer no damage in shipping."

"Up for auction is for a pair of VMPS RM 40 Ribbon Speakers in excellent condition.  Consecutive serial numbers: 12678 and 12679 in beautiful rosewood finish plus the optional tweeter upgrade. Drivers consist of vertically arranged ribbon mid and tweeter. Also has 10” woven carbon fiber for low bass and mid bass.  The VMPS RM 40 have effortless mids, pristine highs, articulate bass and of course, that signature vocal purity.  One of the best sounding speakers ever made. The VMPS RM 40 won the Best of CES in 2002 and 2003. Cosmetics are excellent, no tears or snags, there is only a couple of dings on the cabinet that can easily be touched up.  These flaws are very minor and hard to see from a normal listening position. VMPS was a loudspeaker manufacturer based out of El Sobrante, CA. Run by Brian Cheney since 1977, Brian passed on in late 2012.

Each speaker contains:

- 5" polypropylene cone isolated midrange
- 10" low-bass driver with 40oz magnet
- 10" high-compliance, mass loaded, downward-firing, slot-loaded passive radiator subwoofer
- Focal Superdome inverted hard dome tweeters (upgraded)
- Ribbon supertweeters driver (upgraded).
- Two sound control pods (front & rear) used to tune the sound to your environment

These are low distortion, high efficiency speakers that will operate with an amplifier output of only 25RMS/channel (or greater of course). I ran these with a pair of 50 watt solid-state monos.

Speaker dimensions: 39" X 12" X 15". About 75 lbs each."

"I have for sale a pair of VMPS passive subwoofers. These are in great condition and sound terrific. This is a 12" diameter non-powered subwoofer with a 12" active radiator in front and a 12" passive radiator in bottom. VMPS calls it their "Smaller Subwoofer" It measures 16" wide, 16" deep and 27" tall with a nice walnut cabinets.

VMPS has been known for making outstanding sub woofers and speakers for nearly 3 decades. The subwoofer is rated at 8 ohms and the frequency range is 28-150Hz. These will take just about all the power you can throw at it (up to 250 watts rms) and the bass is really tight.

I had all the drivers (main and passive radiators) refoamed a few years ago by VMPS themselves. I removed the speakers from the cabinets and shipped them. The passive radiators are mounted in a "slot" at the bottom of the speaker cabinet. VMPS informed me that the bottom of the cabinet needed to be knocked off to access them, then screwed back on when replaced. I've shown the bottom with the screws in the pictures.
