Eminence Lil Buddy or MCM for 10-inch OB Project
« on: 25 Feb 2015, 07:13 pm »
I am starting yet another OB project based around a 10-inch mid-bass/mid using an active xover around 2K to a Heil. I have a small sealed sub crossed around 50 Hz so I don't need this driver to go that deep. I know musicians that rave about the Eminence Lil Buddy hemp drivers for guitar and harp amps but I doubt many audiophools have used these yet in an OB design.

Based on some of  Matevana's posts, I have narrowed it down to the following two drivers:

  • Eminence Lil Buddy, 10" hemp cone midrange (Qts .84, 98.8 db)

  • MCM-AUDIO-SELECT-55-2981-/55-2981

Any thoughts? I need a light and fast driver to keep up with the Heil. The Lil Buddy is around $80 versus the MCM is around $31 but price is not really the issue.

I guess it would depend on the volume level you require, but the Lil' Buddy's "slow to break up, but crunchy when driven" would give me pause thinking it's expressly designed for the wanted distortions associated with electric guitar.  Unless you are looking for a crunchy sounding OB.  ;)

Take a look at the Eminence B102 bass driver. It's very efficient, has a nice aluminum frame, and the whizzer cone allows it to be crossed into mid-woofer territory if necessary.  I use it currently in two different OB projects.
