What is your favorite jazz instrument?

For me it's a tossup between the piano and the trumpet.  Love 'em love 'em love 'em.

Least favorite is the sax, any sax.  Maybe just because they're ubiquitous.
But also because of the symbology, though I suppose you can't blame the instrument for that.

Hah.  'Grazing in the Grass' just came on.  I forgot cowbell.  How could I forget cowbell?

Trumpet, of course. My father taught me the trumpet is the king of the jazz combo. Trumpet always supposed to take the first solo in dixieland band. I've seen a lot of combos over the years, trumpet always has the biggest mystique and potential for excitement.

Going to see Dizzy many times when I was a kid I remember walking into the venue and seeing his trumpet sitting on stage on a little stand. I thought, "Oh shit, there it is!" I knew I was in for a thrill.

On the other hand, when a trumpeter fails to live up to expectations, or is overhyped, there's no bigger disappointment. Discovering a new jazz trumpeter to study and listen to is a special treat. Sadly that doesn't happen as much as it once did. It's so hard to play it well.

Depends on who is playing, but never hear a better tenor than Bob Fleming:

I would anticipate sax being the most common pick, and I definitely love me a good sax player (major Lew Tabackin fan), but just for chuckles, I'm gonna nominate vibes.

I nominate bass. When well played it completes the feeling so satisfyingly in all kinds of ensembles. For solo instruments I would have say guitar or even the voice.

The Hammond has the sound so good that even badly played is beautiful.

Trombone for me.  I'm a huge Kai Winding fan.  JJ Johnson, Urbie Green or Bill Watrous are also good.

Next would be Trumpet followed by alto sax (I'm not a Tenor fan) then piano.

My favorite alto sax player is Paul Desmond.  Great sound, decent technique and he always knew where he was going, melodically and musically speaking.

You might enjoy Ian McDougall if you haven't heard him. He has a sound so distinctive I can identify it when I hear him on the radio. He also possesses the niceset tone, vibrato and phrasing I have heard.

Here's a fragment from one of the CDs on the list from his website. I recorded it, so I'm a little biased, I guess!

That's from "Burnin' the House Down" a live recording of his sextet done at a local club which burned down three days after the recording. I also recorded "Songs and Arias", a 2 CD set, in 1997, or thereabouts.
