My daughter has purchased a couple of frozen meals from a company called Freshly. The meals come packed with those ice packs and insulated with cotton batting. I was going to discard the insulation until I removed it from the plastic and thought, hmmm.

The pieces are 36x16x2 and I thought maybe they would make decent absorption panels if I built a frame and wrapped them in fabric. I could, and probably would double the thickness on the panels. Any thoughts on this?

When I made up my panel I used "Ultra Touch" insulation, which looks just like what you have pictured. Its nicer than fiberglass to work with and is supposedly slightly better acoustically.

That was an intense thread without a real conclusion from my reading.

I'll build a couple 4" thick panels and listen.

Try to look up the acoustical properties of said material.  Most look better than they perform.  Open cell foam or egg cartons are a sick joke.  Search for wide band acoustic absorption.  One of the best is Owens Corning 703 high density fiberglass (used by GIK, one of the sponsors here at Audio Circle).  Their thinner (2 inches of fiberglass) panels are rated for midrange/treble frequencies, but the thicker ones (4 inches of fiberglass) also cover the mid-bass range.

I've been using denim batt for years for acoustic damping. It is a very powerful sound absorber, non-toxic, and no itch. Not easy to cut though and it sheds dust. Better than yellow FG panels, ime.
