Old Sonics amps by Bryston
« on: 29 Nov 2015, 03:46 am »

Hi All and hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.
I have purchased from a recently refurbished Imax, a pair of Sonics 800x by Bryston which I think is the Bryston 7nrb, a pair of Sonics 600x by Bryston which I think is the 5nrb. I also have a Sonics 400x by Bryston which, is it the 3b or the 3nrb or are they the same? Serial number 700429, 960V, Stereo Input Module, listed on back. Thanks and maybe James could give me the year and any other info to help a newbee.

I don't know about the Sonics amps but Bryston's have a date code which is explained here - http://www.bryston.com/pages/warranty.html

"

As of 2006-02-22 Bryston will only warranty Bryston products purchased through authorized Bryston dealers. Bryston products with a date code of 0608 or higher (date code format is “yyww”, where “yy” is the two least significant digits of the year and “ww” is the week of the year) must be accompanied by a copy of the bill-of-sale from a Bryston authorized dealer to qualify for warranty service."

I was hoping you might have someone might be able to offer advice/guidance about a possible Sonics 600x amp purchase. I love Bryston sound, however, my teacher salary can't afford it. This might be my path there...

First, does anyone know if it is possible to abandon/remove/bypass the built in VHF/HF/LF Sonics 600x crossover?

Second, is it possible to unbridge the two bridged channels - basically leaving me with a 3x120w amp (Bryston 5b nrb). I realize I would need to add an additional input and set of speaker terminals - I would prefer 3 balanced inputs.

Lastly, anything else I should know about or consider before getting into a project like this? The seller has four 600x amps.

If I could at least abandon the crossover, but NOT unbridge (1x400w + 1x120w), I would buy three of the 600x amps to run my six-channel setup with 400w each to main left+main right+sub and 120w each to rear left+rear right+center. If I could unbridge, I might buy four of them and add side surrounds and possibly power speakers in an adjacent room.
