Any Gothic/symphonic metal follower around? i've been waiting for the latest nightwish album.

Hi All,

Just discovered this thread  8)

So much to discuss and so little time

Re. these two quotes - Count me in.

Got all of the Nightwish albums and seen them a few times.

I do miss Tarja though - just a different world truly MONUMENTAL.

Tristania supported one of the Nightwish Shows - not to shabby a double bill eh! :D

On the Symphonic front Rhapsody and Dark Moor are worth checking out too.

Re. the comments on loudest;
Twisted Sister at Newcastle Mayfair were pretty much up there and Manowar, but nothing topped Motorhead at Middlesborough Crypt  :icon_twisted:

I see some comments on UFO, caught them earlier in the year with Vinnie Moore on geetar - not too bad.
Saw them with Schenks a couple of times - He was in a class of his own.
Had tickets to see them a few years back with said shredder of the flying V only to have the show cancelled due to an off stage punch up the night before between him and Phil - Bummer!

Best Metal Concert - very, very difficult........
Most recently probably Heaven & Hell (RIP Ronnie - a true legend), Lamb Of God and Iced Earth  triple header.
Prior to that Judas Priest/Scorpions Double Headliner - this was especially spot on as Klaus and Co. had to raise their game to compete with the almighty Priest - not a cigarette lighter to be seen all set  :D

Got to admit though I've had a few fun nights with Y&T - Great tunes and Dave and the boys certainly know how to party.

I saw Blackfoot a few weeks ago Charlie and Greg T still giving it their all - Great Stuff.

Too many good nights  :thumb:

Most of my audio listening is on vinyl and the metal discs, esp. the NWOBHM, still get plenty of spins;
Whitespirit, Samson, Maiden, Quartz, Motorhead etc.  etc..

In fact the 'heads Overkill had a recent visit to the Sondek - Stunning!

I'd best shut up - Could be here all night.

Keep on rockin'
Dave

Sorry - One final thing

Balls To The Wall   :thumb:

I like that album too!  I just wish it sounded better.  How does the XRCD sound?

This new Opeth...I've given it repeated listenings now and while I appreciate the complexities of it and all the fine playing and the fact that sonically it's gorgeous ( Steven Wilson strikes again!), the whole thing just seems.....sterile. It isn't connecting with me on an emotional level so far. You'd think that if this was the album Akerfeldt says he's been wanting to make since he was a teenager, there'd be more passion in it somehow.

Really?

I see this as a completely emotional. Especially from track 5 (Nepenthe) to the end.

I actually wish it was more complex.

Gave it another listen last night. Close to brilliant for me.

The xrcd is just heaven and the good proof of excellent recording. But the old one is very bad and not enjoyable at all.

August Burns Red -  Mariana's Trench                 (From their CONSTELLATIONS album)

Dark Tranquility -  Wonders at your Feet             (From their HAVEN album)

Parkway Drive -  Horizons                (From their HORIZONS album)

Really?

Really. Still.
Lacks the aggression which is a defining characteristic of metal. Sounds like readings from The Big Book Of British Prog, which is fine, but it's not metal. I'm not knocking it. I'm listening to it as I post this. It's enjoyable and well-crafted - perhaps a little over-crafted -but it's not metal.

Listening to the reissue of Candlemass -Nightfall.
This is a reissue that makes it hard to pick.
My original pressing is in good shape. They didn't get all goofy and add a bunch of ambiance in the remix.
Also ordered the Candlemass doomology box set.
Candlemass really scratches my itch.

Finally just got the new Mastodon.  Newbury was sold out when I went to get it the day it was released!

Listened 3 times so far.  I'm really digging it!  They seem to have channeled some past energies for this one.  I like how it doesn't take itself quite as seriously as their past few releases.  If you preferred Remission to Blood Mountain (as I did), you'll like this album.  If you think Crack the Skye was their finest you may be a little disappointed.

Oh, I totally agree that it's not metal.

But your original post was not about it's lack of metal-ness. Your original post concerned its being 'sterile' an lacking emotion.

My comment was stating my opinion that it is full of emotion.

But we both agree, Heritage is not a metal album, it's prog.

Riot, fire down under" has been remastered by mister Grey and pressed at QRP.
I have my original copy which sounds like most 80's metal lps, dreadful.
This new pressing while not up to the standards set by the slayer or pantera reissues, is a welcomed improvement.

When a buddy & I where around 12 yrs young we would put our ears to his older brothers room (which was in his folks basement) and thats how I discovered Deep Purple & Black Sabbath. I'm still listening to those groups 38 yrs later. By the way, Sabbath(the original line up!) had a press conference a few weeks ago & announced they were in the studio AND a world tour would follow.
