Yesterday from the NYT:

"It’s time to encourage a lot more research on marijuana, and to remove it from Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act. The D.E.A. and the F.D.A. insist that there is not enough scientific evidence to justify removing marijuana from Schedule 1. This is a disingenuous argument; the government itself has made it impossible to do the kinds of trials and studies that could produce the evidence that would justify changing the drug’s classification."

After November, it will be legal in the world's 7th largest economy, plus the rest of the west coast AND Nevada. Rescheduling is inevitable. There is too much money to be made.

Perhaps the DEA wants to keep cannabis illegal so that they can continue to justify their huge budget of which a substantial portion is devoted to the hopeless task of suppressing weed consumption. That money would be better spent targeting real hard drugs such as meth and heroin. The DEA is an entrenched bureaucracy that is sadly in need of reform and perhaps an audit.
