I spent some time yesterday testing the drivers. As I suspected the sensitivity matching isn't conducive to a passive crossover. The edge resonance on the midrange (common with a driver like this) also makes it difficult to have a smooth response and reasonable impedance around the dip with passive correction.

Padding the woofer by reducing the gain is actually a good thing in this case since it allows more headroom for the bass extension equalization. I did a trial run with a moderate amount of EQ applied and it measures very well. I tried a few different crossover points and the sound is very clean.

Isn't DSP is the best thing since sliced bread?

The little bit of fooling around with it that I've done it seems like a good idea to start with the most efficient drivers you can and eq your way down to a nice flat response.

Here's the sealed box bass response with the MiniDSP and equalization.

That certainly looks nice. Very flat with good extension.  :thumb:

So, do you need multiple amps for this system?  :?:

These speakers are interesting to me as we are trying to go off the grid with solar electric and I picture something efficient like these speakers combined with Red Wine battery amps being perfect for that situation. But if you need to buy 3 stereo amps it certainly changes the economics of that plan.

Yes, tri-amped in this case.

Rick, any updates on this project? Any cabinet pics or dimensions you can post?

That is just off the chart! Is there a right angle anywhere?
Do you veneer after box assembly or are the panels pre veneered then assembled.
Superb work.

Hello folks. I just registered because Rick Craig mentioned to me that he was posting a picture of the cabinets I did for this collaborative project here. As far as Oskar's question, I never thought about it, but since he asked, I thought about it and there is not one right angle on the cabinet. The build as you can imagine, wasn't simple. My brain started to hurt as I tried to figure out all the angles. With the cost of the kappa burl veneer, I was concerned that I might mess up one of those facets so I thought about cutting them before veneering, but the more I thought about it, I concluded that I had to veneer first since each of those facets has a different bevel on each side. That means that some of the points on those triangles are like needles with practically nothing behind them. I thank you for your kind words as it was in spite of the difficulty, a fun and challenging build. Here's another picture for you to enjoy.

Just noticed the typo in my post. The veneer is mappa burl.
