Peerless 831812 replacement
« on: 26 Jun 2017, 02:50 pm »
I am looking for affordable 12" drivers to replace the Peerless 831812 used in the Gradient SW-63 dipole subwoofers. The alternative replacement - 831857 and 830500 - are no longer available, they are discontinued. It can be any make.

Hi,

The Peerless 830669 (Madisound) might be a candidate. Compared to the original specs you posted on another site, the sensitivity is close (89.8dB vs 89.3dB @ 2.83V) as are the Fs and Qts figures. I wasn't able to find anything on the 831812 at the Tympany site... even under archives. It's either real old or an OEM part number assigned to Gradient... or both. You may want to see what SB acoustics has to offer.  I've been impressed with their woofer motors.

Hello,

Thanks for the info. The 831812 was used by Gradient when they launched the SW-63 subwoofer in 1991, it is an old speaker, it was probably an OEM part number assigned to Gradient as you mentioned. Browsing through my Peerless catalogues I could not find any info about the 830500 either.

A friend of mine suggested the Acoustic Elegance Dipole 12 - http://aespeakers.com/shop/dipole/dipole12/ - but the price is quite high at $339 a piece.

Yes, I already explained to Horacio a pair of those per side in a H-frame with the Yung 300-6 plate amp, would be similar or outperform the original Gradient. For a more than reasonable cost, around $320 or so.
I thought he would have had them built by now!

cheers,

AJ is right, the problem is that I do not want to use a plate amplifier of so so quality. I want to run the subs with either my superb Electrocompaniet Ampliwire 100 DMB [125W/Ch] or a pair of recently upgraded and bridged QUADs 405-2 [180W]. I would prefer to use the Yung amps money on better quality drivers than the new Peerless manufactured by Tymphany.

I have found a better replacement for 12" Peerless drivers, the Acoustic Elegance Dipole 12-D16. The AE dipole series are the most common for open baffle use.  they have many high end companies using them in their flagship speakers for good reason.

They are made in USA, not cheap but worth the difference.

That is a great driver.

There are also Dayton woofers capable of excellent OB performance, and some pro audio ones - but not sure they would drop straight into your existing enclosure.

Have fun with the project!
