What is the best 10" woofer for an OB speaker
« on: 3 Mar 2016, 11:27 pm »
Hi All,
I'm looking for recommendations on what would be the best 10" woofer to use in an open baffel design speaker.  I need the woofer to be at least 92 DB efficient.  It will be used with a Wild Borro Betsy driver and be driven by a 2 watt Decware SET amp. It only needs to get down to around 40 Hz.

Thanks,
Rich

You'll be driving all 4 drivers with the little SET?

Have you considered a 100w yung plate amp? Affordable and plenty of power.

If you require that kind of efficiency, you may want to take a look at some of the 10" Guitar speakers on the market made by Eminence and Tone Tubby. Some offer alnico magnets, some with hemp based cone material, most with high-ish Qts that many find desirable for OB. Not always the last word in detail or ruler flat response, but if done correctly, can offer a very nice presentation overall. I am running two different sets with only slightly more powerful push-pull tube amps (one EL-34 based and the other 6L6GC) and both sound very nice.

Correct. I could use one 15'' as Alpha15A in an H frame,
if amp power is small I could use a 100W Class D amp.

Thanks for all your reply's.  I have decided to use a plate amp to drive the woofers.  So what 10" woofer would work best for adding some bottom to the Betsy's?  I'm using MCM 55-2981 woofers with a Dayton 100 watt plate amp now.  It sounds pretty good but I was wondering if there may be something better out there. I'm looking for tight clean musical base, not room shaking deep base.

10'' woffer dont work in OB, unless you use alot them.
Instead use one 15'' as Alpha15A.

Not sure of 10's, but GR Research has some very good (IMO) 8s for OB use.

Thanks again for the feedback.  I jumped the gun a little and built my OB's out of some nice curly maple and walnut as a two speaker baffel.  I was hoping not to have to scrap it for better sound.  I get plenty of bass as is but I would like it to be cleaner and more musical. I do have some base traps in the Connors the speakers are facing and I have a QRD defuser behind them.  This gives me a great sound stage and lots of detail.  I really like the Betsy's

I should also mention that the room is very small 9x12, and that I listen at fairly low to moderate volume.
Thanks

The AE Speakers boss are stringent DSP eq most be used, on the other side anyone can buy and use a cheap Alpha15 w/no eq and get satisfactory results.

When I emailed him to a D15 it was mandatory use DSP.

OBS.: just see the LO15 that is OK at MMS=74g and 93dB, it need a powerful amp though.

the LO15 is 4 Ohm , your amp put out volts non W, is 97.55 dB
btw he can take power , you pay for ;)
but only if you have need  higth xo ... two alpha work the same ;)
PS
For that db, I mean work for a non biamp system.

Two Alphas per side wired parallel with a 100 watt Yung plate amp is the cat's meow. Here I'm powering the Alpha's with two Dayton amps but a single Yung is all you need.

Betsy over single Alpha is really quite good but two Alphas per side is mo' better.
