Checked out The Contortionists album on youtube, and then ebay'd the vinyl. Great suggestion, really digging what I have heard so far.  :thumb:

Pretty impressive.  Excellent mix with some vocal shades of Katatonia... even a hint of Tiamat.  A collage of sound.

Nice find FireGuy.  Very nice.

Been too quiet on the METAL thread!

Checking out the Metal genre selections on the Tidal music service lately.  Liking so far the "Restarter" album by "Torche".  Not sure what pigeon hole to put it in.  I guess if you if you like slow & low doom / stoner type metal (?).

I bought both the Tesseract and The Contortionist recently.  Both quite good.

Picked up some others to fill out my collection:

Crack the Skye by Mastodon
The Joy Of Motion by Animals As Leaders   (was listening to this last night...awesome!)
The Parallax 2: Future Sequence by Between The Buried and Me
An Ocean Between Us by As I Lay Dying
Maps Of Non-Existent Places by Thank You Scientist
Apocryphon by The Sword
Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words With Tones) by Intronaut
Juggernaut: Alpha by Periphery
Juggernaut: Omega by Periphery
Hats Off To The Bull by Chevelle (not metal, but I kinda like them)
Just recently started listening to Gojira

But one of my favorites of recent is Anciients - Heart of Oak

Here is one clip (9mins) that I really love on that album.

http://youtu.be/Jvmcx-EDR-w

Here is a really cool clip.... 10 metal styles in 3 minutes
http://youtu.be/qpZ18recO9A

Its interesting because you can quickly pick out which styles you like and which you don't.

Great find...

Caligula's Horse

Yeah, that's a good one.

Give these a try:

039 - Amalgama

New band from Italy. Great melodic prog-metal with 70's prog influences.

Cyrax - Pictures

Another new Italian prog-metal band. Here's the review from progmetalzone.com:

"Progressive Metal (this band is the REAL deal!) An amazing fusion of technical thrash metal and melodic prog rock along with a decidedly wacky sense of humor. Many of the songs also have very cool chamber classical sections for a wonderful dose of sophistication. A truly stunning album from one of Italy's best new bands)"

The Last Embrace - The Winding Path

French band with loads of 70's prog influences. Great vocals. I've only heard samples, but what I've heard is impressive.

Special Providence - Essence of Change

Masters of instrumental metal jazz fusion. Unbelievable musicianship by all members. This is their 4th release and may be their best. Killer stuff.

There's a new project from prog-metal mastermind, Arjen Lucassen and Anneke van Giersbergenm (The Gathering), called "The Gentle Storm" that is getting all sorts of positive buzz.

I still think Wolverine from Sweden is one of the most woefully unknown, and under appreciated prog-metal bands around.

I believe their band name has something to do with it. It's not the best name to begin with, but association with the superhero movies probably does not help their credibility. But they are a serious band, with great musicianship, great compositions, one of the best vocalists in the genre, and great songs loaded with emotion.

Here's a taste:

Into the Great Nothing from the album Communication Lost.

Leaving Yesterday from the album The Window Purpose

This is a great song that goes from very heavy to lighter beautiful passages. Great duet with a female vocalist.

Just wanted to say that I just started listening to Porcupine Tree.  They are fantastic.   Having been and still a A Pink Floyd fan I  love The way Porcupine Tree sounds like early Floyd.

Metallica, now, on the capital mall. Who would of thunk Metallica would be could considered mainstream?  Kirk Hammet is looking OLD man!

Read the lyrics of Bowling For Soup's "1985":
"When did Motley Crue become classic rock?"
"And when did Ozzy become an actor?"

That sums it up.

been expanding my breadth of metal lately, checking out a lot of bands I wasn't familiar with.   I tend to like melodic death metal and progressive metal the best.   Some good finds lately have been:

Persefone - Spiritual Migration

Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I   &  Citadel

Dark Tranquility - The Gallery
