USB DAC's capable of HiRez
« on: 10 Jun 2009, 06:42 pm »
Here's an interesting, somewhat comprehensive list of USB DAC's that can go to 48k natively, some to 96k with their own drivers and some...asynchronously to 192k.  Kudos to David (Rydenfan) for forwarding this on to me.  Feel free to add to this list:

http://thewelltemperedcomputer.com/HW/USB_DAC.htm

I'll start the adding to the list already:

Ps Audio Perfect Wave DAC (among it's 7 inputs is a 96k USB one)
http://www.psaudio.com/ps/products/description/perfectwave-dac?cat=audio

Remember, these are DACs that can accept HiRez natively (or with drivers).  A DAC that only accepts redbook and upconverts to 96k, etc is not a candidate for this list.

Almost any DAC that accepts USB can accept up to 48kHz as they almost all use the same receiving chip.  A lot of the DAC's on the list you linked to are not hi-rez through USB.

Really, the only "audiophile grade" DAC's that I am aware of that accept up to 96kHz over USB are.

Empirical Audio Overdrive
Ayre QB-9
Pretty much any Wavelength
Benchmark
PS Audio PerfectWave
Lavry
...and a few upcoming DAC's

...although, I am sure I am missing some.

Peace,

Lee

Hi James,

Are there any plan for an upgrade of the BDA-1 USB interface in the next months (to handle files of res higher than 48/16)  ?

You may want to pose that question over in the Bryston circle.  I just bought a BDA-1 and don't know of any upgrade to USB being mentioned.

I think it was meant for Bryston Circle anyway.  He asked for James.  :)

None that I know of.  I would't get the BDA-1 if you are thinking USB; I'd get it for all the other inputs.  I'd lean toward the Ayre, Empirical or Wavelength (Ayre and Wavelength been here the past few days; going back to dealer today) if USB is your primary signal path.

Nice DAC.  This USB implementation, however, is only 48k in.  it will upconvert to anything, but doesn't handle anything higher than 48k natively via USB.
