Title: New Apollo's In The House till October
Post by: aldcoll on 25 Jul 2017, 12:25 am
Well this weekend I accompanied mresseguie to the speaker hobbit is the magical woods.  Or as some call it Lou Hinkley in Ferndale WA.

I wont bore you with the 4 a.m. departure time and breakfast at a Dinneys details.

We did get to see Nico and Lou.

So the speakers were loaded up and we drove south to Bothell WA ( Seattle suburb) and made a splash at the Puget Sound Audio Group.  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=141682.0

With a Major unveil we proceeded to put about 10 hours on the new Apollo's.

Before I prattle on let me say that Lou had run the speakers 24/7 for a few weeks as they will eventually reside in Taiwan.

I think it would easy to say the crowd was very well pleased.

The 10 Daedalus Woofer is the real improvement.  One member of the group has a pair of Ulysses and he was impressed.

We ran through a wide range of music including a tract that I am unfamiliar with.  At one point there is a almost a surround feel.  We had played the track with Greg's (the Host's) GR Super V's and both setup's reproduce the effect.

As a owner of Daedalus Pan's I am aware of the Daedalus Sound and this new speaker hits it out of the ball park.

I have been forced to put my Pan's in the spare room so I can Baby Sit or continue the break in before they arrive at their new home.

I will make revisit this posting and add my comments.  Right now I will kick back with a beverage and do some listening as I have the house to myself for a while.

If you are in the Oregon I-5 area hit me up.

Wonderful job Lou and thank you mressiguie,

Alan

Now, Alan, don't you think Lou is a bit tall to think of him as a hobbit?

Don't forget that we sat in the showroom, hooked up the Denafrips Venus DAC and played a few songs on Lou's Apollos. I found that very satisfying. Even though Lou detected a small difference (with the modded Oppo the winner), I was impressed that the Venus held its own against the Modwright.

The Apollos are so revealing that small changes upstream really can be easily detected. Every time we switched out a DAC at the G2G, there was an appreciable difference in the music - even the differences between the 2 MP-D2 DACs. Wow! It was educational to hear the difference between your KWA-150SE amp and the Butler amp. The Modwright was king that's for sure.

At the G2G while the music was playing quite loudly, the woofer was barely moving yet it sounded wonderful. I don't know what voodoo magic Lou sprinkled on my speakers, but I'm mighty pleased with them.

You've got them bolted to the floorboards, right? If you get tired of babysitting them, I suppose I could make a special trip back to take them away. Greg seemed very interested in looking after them.

Enjoy!

My hat's off to Michael and Alan for bringing the Daedalus Apollo's to Greg's for all of us lucky enough to attend.  Just an incredible nerd party to the max!!  Can't wait for the next one!

The DENAFRIPS Venus Dac was pretty good but I think it will just "turn on" SQ wise after some more time.  I bought a Metrum Hex and it required a couple of hundred hours to get going again as it had been shelved for some time before I aqcuired it.

I like Lou's speakers and now better understand his sonic goals, my first exposure was to a pair of DA 1.1 (that have every possible upgrade) belonging to another member of AC and having heard the new Apollo's I get it.

My PMC's are from a speaker mfr that has deep experience in studio mastering/monitoring so I would love to have a shootout between these two monkey coffins.  Let's top that off with a shootout with the Pass X350.5 and the Modwright and then we need to compare the A2 and the SP-14.  Then there's....

Thanks again gents it was just too much fun!

Challenge accepted.
So when will you pack up and be down :thumb:

Next time the Modwright moves there will be a football team involved.

Come down and watch the Sun disappear.

It was a pleasure meeting you and hope to again.  Let's say high noon on the Audio Road.

Jake, would those be mine, or someone else?

Since you heard my DA-1.1s in 2010, Lou performed the Version 2 upgrade to the wiring and all poly xovers, added trim rings and replaced the 8" drivers with his new driver. I also added a pair of 15" Daedalus BOWs (subs). Today, they are essentially the Argos without the sculptured front. They remain the most tonally accurate speaker I have heard and I can't wait to hear the Apollos, which will probably be at RMAF this year. Everyone familiar with Lou's speakers tell me the Apollos hit it out of the park.

Let me know the next time you plan to get together and I'll try to make the long drive from Spokane or maybe use miles to fly there.

Yup!  I have not forgotten that day because you honored me with being present for the Master Set of your 1.1s.  That was very educational and I was able to go home and perform it and got a significant improvement SQ.  Thanks again!

I may be wrong but I thought you posted in Lou's circle about getting this upgrade?  Still, I don't know just what it brought in sound improvement.

I did not know that!  Wow, bet those make thunder when called upon, eh?  Congrats!

Yes, the Apollos are really good.  I'm a self-confessed, card-carrying bass head and these babies do bass very, very well.

If anything comes up on our audio group radar I'll let you know.  We are trying to get a formal circle but no one has stepped up to take the reigns as facilitator.  I would but I am already the fac for the Tube-O-Phile circle.   Suppose I could ask JohnR for special permission to manage two circles.  I highly doubt the regional circle need much active facilitating.

Have a great evening and nice chatting,
Jake

I am lucky to have heard Vinyl lady latest setup a couple years ago.  This was also the first time I heard Lou's BOW's ( Bass Optimized Woofer).

Flawless and seamless.

When we first arrived at Lou's shop Saturday he had the BOW's running with the shop Apollo's.   While I only got to hear part of a track I could tell he had turned them off.   But not by very much.

After have my first nice full day with the Apollo's and having had a Rhythmic F12 for a while in the past I currently don't feel the need.

But then again I don't consider myself a base head.

When the Apollo's go away, outside of a long cry I will want a sub again.

The Apollo's play to 20 htz but down a few htz.

Still working hard to break them in.  What a laborious job.

And I guess the Hobbit comment was my standard half thought out statement but he is in the wood's or close to.

Well some of the summer schedules have changed around for the wife and I finally got the front room to myself for a whole day.

I have been slowly moving the Apollo's away from the back wall and the sound has greatly improved and nobody has mentioned that she has noticed :nono:

While I don't posses the talent to put superlatives in my statements like some folks can.  Allow me to say they are darned fine speakers.  I have been listening to all my favorites and some new tracks and I just can't get enough.

The 10 inch woofer is just something in it's self.  I tend to listen to folks that play a lot of acoustic guitar and they really capture the sound I hear sitting in the local bistro in a all acoustic set. The Milk Carton Kids never sound better.

One of my go to Albums is Trouble by Ray LaMontagne and the track Burn.  OOOOOOOOOO my :thumb:

To sum it up I truly have speaker envy, I am counting down the days these Apollo's have to leave.

No for some R.L. Burnside and get the ribs off the grill.

Lou you are onto something and I can't wit to hear the next model Zuss

Geez, Alan.

I so wish I could listen to those speakers. Sigh.  :( I just don't have time to slip away. I'm doing my father's 2016 taxes right now and I'm going crazy because so much info is missing.

Enjoy them, dude!

Hi, Alan.

We just arrived at our AirBnB home in Cambridge, MA. After two weeks in Chicago with no music, I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms.

You still enjoying the Apollos?

Actually they have overpowering my listening so they are boxed and in the garage.

There is also the gouges on 1 top and side from a friends Great Dane who chased our cat.   Any way he knocked the left speaker over.  I will need to to reemberse me for the scratch on wall that cushioned the fall.

Also the dog owner has a vet bill from one of the spikes that scrapped the dog.  I thought it was just a scratch but they said 20 stitches.

I also had a special branding iron made to mark the front of the units as they will be present for the solar event.  I figure the least I could do was cover the cost of the iron.  Lou assured me the Walnut front would look good with a chared western influence.

Enjoy the east coast.  things couldn't be better here.

Actually, we spent an evening at Buddy Guy's Legends listening to awesome Blues. Buddy Guy is 81 (and suffers prostate cancer) yet he still got up and jammed three banging tunes. www.buddyguy.com

How do the Apollo's compare to the Ulysses?
Title: Re: New Apollo's In The House till October

I can't say as I have refused to hear the Ulysses.  Why punish myself.

It's going to be hard enough to pack these up in a month.

I will go listen to Zeus.

I have heard the Ulysses a few times at RMAF. I love them and have always assumed those would be my next speaker. Just wondering if I should consider the Apollo's as well. Zeus will likely exceed my budget (although I haven't actually seen a price).
Title: Re: New Apollo's In The House till October
Post by: aldcoll on 1 Sep 2017, 05:57 pm
I would put them on the list.

For my listening the Apollo's are more then enough for my front room of 21 by 18 and three door ways of major size.

I pretty much use them as oversized monsters it seems.  I an prevented from major sound panels.  So I went with a big mirror on the back wall.  Right now it has a blanket over it.

The Ulysses has off set tweeters I THINK.  I have heard the Posidens and they do have to offset and it was a instant sound stage enhancement.

I would spend time with Lou at the show.  You might send a email and cover some of your questions.  He is real busy getting ready for the show right now.

You might try a pm to MCA here on A.C. as he has the Ulysses and has heard the Apollo's.

It's something I play with from time to time.  It can have a pretty dramatic effect on the stereo image, and where the panels are and how they are angled will affect that.  Sometimes I put them on the outside of the speakers instead.  Whether that is good or bad, or more true to the recording, I can't always say.  In any case, they are easy to move or remove.

I see you use a PASS Int-60 to power your speakers. I've read about this amp, but have no experience with it. Could you speak a bit about it and what it does for your speakers? Any comparisons to a Modwright amp?

Here are a few "professional" reviews

There are also quite a few discussions on other audio boards.  I don't really have anything specific to add to all of them (I've contributed on some of the latter).  Pass Labs products are generally felt to be of high quality, compatible with almost any speaker, very listenable and competitively priced (which is some cases is pretty high ).

Well my attorney made his annual house call ( he too doesn't want me in his office).

As we were finishing up he asked about the speakers as he thought they were larger then the last time.

And as I pointed out they were and explained that a guy dropped them off.

He immediately pointed out that they were abandoned property and I had possession of them and that is nine tenths of the law and thus the state of Oregon would recognize that I was the true owner.

And that is why I keep him on retainer.

Hi, Lou.

You're more than welcome. You may have to drive to Alan's house because I won't have a preamp or DAC in Vancouver unless I can beg, borrow, or steal from local dealers. My gear is either in Taiwan or in storage. Stored gear will remain stored until we sell our house in Corvallis and buy a new one in Vancouver or Camas.

P.S. I've worn my Daedalus shirt in Chicago, Cambridge, Boston, Atlanta, and Savannah. Perhaps someone noticed....

I guess it's time for a Don Sachs KT88 thread.

My review may be slow in coming. I won't be able to burn it in till after I get to Taiwan in November. However, others have received the amp. Perhaps I can create a new thread to encourage their posting.

I will try to be a little more series this post.

As the date gets closer that the Apollo's depart I am spending more time listening to them.  I am in still impressed that the new 10 inch woofer and crossover's.   I just get immersed in the sound.

I have gone through my music collection rather extensively.  We have come to enjoy some classic music in the afternoon book reading time.  Lang Lang's  New York Rhapsody is our current favorite and the live performance is even better. http://www.pbs.org/arts/pbs-arts-festival/2016/live-lincoln-center-lang-langs-new-york-rhapsody/

As with all of Lou's speakers the only fatigue might be from sitting.  No glare or color added just a fine reproduction of the music.  A nice full body of sound and presence without getting in your face.

I just wish I had all those flowery words you read in the BIG reviews.

Until then I will just kick back and listen.  And believe me the sound is superb.  Too bad the time is short.

My temporary listening room is empty and awaiting the delivery of my Apollos. I'll be down next week for a quick listen, boxing up and driving them to Vancouver, WA. We will leave for Taiwan on/about November 10th.

Joking aside, thank you very much for speaker-sitting them for me while Melody and I were galavanting in Chicago, Boston, and Atlanta (mostly Decatur).

It's been so long since I heard them that it'll be a 'new' experience all over.

I'll bring a box of Kleenex for you, Alan.

All of Lou's speakers are very efficient and mate well with any amp out there.  I forget the exact ratting for the Apollo's but they are in the 95 range.   And they will accept up to 300 watts if I recall.

But I didn't pay much attention to that angle, I just wanted to know how long I would have to Baby Sit them :thumb:

Okay here are the Apollo's in their CURRENT HOME.

And thank you Arthur for the incentive plan.  I will mention that shortly after the trucks pulls out of the drive I will head to Agrarian Ales and soak my sorrows.

I guess I should also give a thank you shout out to Micheal for trusting me these past few months.   Since we have only know each other for about 5 years I have also received and broken in several Audio items.  Some for just testing and some for continued use.

I won't mention names ( this isn't a kiss and tell) but I think three DAC's and a integrated amp and some cables if I recall.

I wont even go into the getting up at 3 a.m. several mornings to spend a day driving and home at almost midnight to audition or purchase these Apollo's.

And it ain't over yet.  Just think if you would wait a few days you could borrow my Modwright :duh: :duh:

Unless I can scramble up a nice amp and DAC, I'll be powering them with my Nuprime IDA-8. Won't that be funny? Pairing an under $1k all-in-one with $14k speakers...

The Apollos are 8 Ohm 96.5dB, so even this modest amp will make them sing pretty well - not as well as Alan's Modwright, of course...

I don't think the timing will work. I know when you leave, and we're planning to fly out November 10. I'd have to return it a few days before that because I need the space in my Tacoma to move stuff into storage. I did fantasize about it though....my upstairs neighbors (and my wife) would not like me.

Oh, and trusting you was easy. The nosy neighbor across the street is on my payroll. He's got all sorts of neat electronic snooping devices.  :nono:

If I can locate some Abyss, I'll bring it over.

Seriously though, thank you, Alan. I really did buy them before I was ready for them and your baby sitting them was very helpful. It would have been a shame to stick them in storage for three months.  :banana piano:  :violin: :drums: :guitar:

I bet you will appreciate having them broken in for you!  Only in the last week or so have my Ulysses really opened up; I’ve had them for about 4 wks, and I think Lou had them completed in his shop and breaking in there for about 10-12 days before shipp8ng them to me, so you have probably saved yourself a monh or so of sub-optimal listening  :)

Hi, Rob.

I forget exactly how many days Lou ran them, but it was enough for him to be confident of their being broken in. Alan and I took them straight over to gregfisk's for a wild day of listening.

I think everyone needs to offer Alan a big group hug cuz he's going to have to part with them on Wednesday.

You're correct, though, in that Lou's speakers need a long time to fully break in thanks to his 'crossovers on steroids' approach to crossover design.

Jump in a Cessna....hop on over.... :thumb:

Unless I can scramble up a nice amp and DAC, I'll be powering them with my Nuprime IDA-8. Won't that be funny? Pairing an under $1k all-in-one with $14k speakers...

The Apollos are 8 Ohm 96.5dB, so even this modest amp will make them sing pretty well - not as well as Alan's Modwright, of course...

Thanks for the offer , it would take 5 plus hours of flying time to Portland , OR  in a C-172  depending on the WX near mountain Shaista, but you know what I may just take  a day trip  or over night  commercial flight to OR and talk to Lou, and listen on to your system maybe , I did write to Lou he suggested coming to Rocky mountain Show , which would have been Great but had scheduling issues . Nuprime IDA-8 ? could not find much on it ? is that a Class D amp ? if so that would be  bummer LOL . Cheers

Lou is just a few miles from the Canadian border so Seattle is the jumping off point.

Alan

P.S. I have found cases of OLD Abyss sold at its original price: :flame: :flame:

Who's that thug? You should have whacked him over the head with a 2x4 and buried him in the garden.

They're safely standing in my Vancouver apartment living room awaiting my modest travel amp for three weeks of joyous listening before I ship them to Taiwan. My D Sachs Kootenay 120 will be delivered in 2 weeks. Then, that will go, too.

Thanks again.

I checked with MOC in Corvallis today. The Abyss won't be distributed for another month or so. Enjoy the Pinot Noir.

Sorry to confuse you, A_shah.

Alan and I were having a joke between us.

The 'thug' above is of me helping Alan box up my Apollos in his living room. His speaker sitting ended yesterday. My speakers are now in my Vancouver apartment. They will remain there for approximately three weeks before I box them up for shipping to Taiwan.

Alan very much enjoyed keeping the Apollos for me while my wife and I were traveling. Now, he must readjust to not having the wonderful sounding Apollos to listen to every day. Perhaps, he'll still find happiness as I am keeping my eyes open for Lampizator DAC sales (that suit my wants) while I am in Taiwan this winter.  :thumb:

MOC is Market of Choice grocery market. The Abyss is the Deschutes Brewery excellent tasting stout that is released just once each year. A bottle of The Abyss is pictured in Alan's avatar window. I had planned to buy some for him to ease his pain, but it is not yet available.

Enjoy your search for wonderful speakers!

Michael

I'm unfamiliar with the Sabrina speakers. Who manufactures them? [Edit] I found them. The Sabrinas and Apollos are a bit different. The Sabrinas are 87dB, 4 ohm 31Hz to 21k KHz three-ways whereas the Apollos are 96.5dB, 8 ohm 20Hz to 24kHz three-ways. I can understand the attraction to three-ways.

This morning was just horrible. I had to box up my Apollos because I'm just about to place my home on the market, and because I fly back to Taiwan in 6 days(!).

I'd spent the last couple days wondering where to store my beautiful speakers, and finally decided that they'd be safest sitting in a fellow audiophile's living room. I shot Aldcol an email this morning asking him if he would be willing to sacrifice some space in his living room for 6 to 8 weeks. I gave him my cell phone number and asked him to call me. I think I had to wait three whole minutes before my phone rang.  :)

And now they're already boxed up and in his car soon to arrive in his home.  I'll miss them.

Take good care of my babies!

Glad Alan will come and pick them up otherwise I would have made you the offer and paid shipping both ways and would have had the pleasure of listening to them for 6/8 weeks along with my Poseidon, One big issue with these are they are a hassle to to pack how do keep doing it and moving them all the time ? I need to ship mine back to  Lou for the new trim rings and the new tweeters in July , just thinking about packing is sooo discouraging
Have a safe trip to Taiwan !

Ashgar,

I'll keep you in mind next time, but shipping them would just make more work for me.

Packing the speakers....yes....it isn't exactly fun is it? They're heavy buggers to begin with. Then, there are those 'special' foam corner protector thingies and the wrap around cardboard that act as inner protectors. If I had to criticize Lou on anything, it would be the protective inner shell design. I think half-inch aluminum would have been better even though it might be a wee bit heavier.

Hopefully for me, this will be the final time I box them up. In a couple months my wife and I will search for our new home, find it and buy it. Then, set up my system and finally buy some acoustic treatments. Then, enjoy blissful music.

A critical piece of the equation is missing from the above post.   Michael said he had movers at the house NOW moving stuff into the garage so the house could show.

While I should have taken a picture to show the elevation change one would have encountered going from the ground floor to the street.  All the while two guys with bad backs lugging them down switchback stairs and what has to be about 20 of grade I was only looking at saving myself and yes you Michael. :thumb:

And I was TASKED with Oiling them so there is that.

 All valid points. It was very fortunate the young movers with strong backs were there. Of course, it had been my plan all along to have the speakers moved by them down to the garage. Our next home will have the usual 1 - 3 steps to the front door. Never again will we own a home with 15(?) steps up to the front door.

Thank you, Alan. Oh, hey. The spikes are here. Do you want the spikes?
