242 and 244, how do i go by which to choose?
« on: 20 Mar 2012, 08:02 pm »
Hello everyone,
Im about ready to buy some acoustic panels and i can only use either 242 or 244 with the total of 6, 2x4 panels. I cant use any tri bass trap or diffuser though.  So my question is, how should i choose? How many of each should i buy? Ive got 2 walls, the one behind the sofa and the one behing tv.
Any input?
Thanks in advnaced.

I could be wrong, but I would think you would want to go with the 244s.

Reading your post, it seems like you do not have any other form of bass trapping or treatment. Even though the 244s won't be in the ideal position for bass trapping, I would assume that some bass trapping, regardless of where, is better then zero.

I think the 244 and 242 are equal in terms of high frequency absorption.

I would think 244's also as they will definitely clean up the bottom end big time, which will free up the upper mids ect.Bass traps make a huge difference as that`s what I first purchased for my corners.
Are these going flat on the walls or in the corners(where two walls meet in the corner)picts would be nice.

+1 without reservation. Working with Bryan from GIK in a situation similar to yours, I ended up with 2 x 244 on the wall behind my TV/ system rack and two more on the wall behind the listening position about 8" apart. Worked quite well and inspired me to discuss my room further with Bryan and then add a couple of Soffit Traps in the corners on the wall behind the listening position as well. Big improvement in a difficult room !

Totally agree with the fellas - address the low frequencies first. The 244s made a great difference sorting out the fundamentals of my room; the 242s solidify that foundation.

Consider even the Monsters - I'm thinking of getting a pair myself now I've heard what the 244s did!

Sorry - been a bit MIA.  Just keeping busy (which is good....)

I would agree that in most cases, the 244 would be  the better choice.  Most rooms can use more bass control rather than more of the thinner panels.
