LS100 vs.36.5 with power supply- which one
« on: 10 Apr 2011, 11:06 am »
Need some advice- I am looking at 2 units- a used 36.5 with the power supply or a good deal on a new ls100- there will be a $1500 difference between the 2- Is it worth the extra $ for the 36.5 or is the 100 close enough- has anyone heard both?? thanks so much for the advice- :D

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the 6moons review of the LS100, where it and the 36.5 are compared.

The LS100 is one great pre, but if you need any balanced ins or outs you need to lean toward the 36.5.  And Srajan compared their list prices, not used vs new....but it's still worthwile.  (BTW, Srajan's LS100 conclusion was surprising, given his comments to to that point).

Srajan's conclusions were, I felt, appropriate and right on the money.

The LS 100 is a phenomenal preamp and is the perfect mate for the KWA 100SE OR KWA 150 or 150 'Signature Edition'.

However, our LS 36.5 'DM' at $10K (vs. $3495 for LS 100) is a better unit.  It has a fully external, dual-mono, tube-rectified and tube-regulated power supply. This gives it a bit better speration and control. It isn't three times the performance, but it is a bit better.  As in all things Audio, the last bit of performance comes at a price.

I believe that Srajan's conclusion was that the LS 36.5 'DM' just offered that extra bit of refinement and control, albeit at a price.

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

How would the LS 36.5 compare with the LS 100. I am about to buy a LS 36.5 but am now wondering if that is the right decision. (I can't demo either unit...)

Also, is there any way to adjust the balance level for the L & R channels on the LS 36.5?

Cheers

Dave.
