« on: 14 Nov 2010, 01:49 am »
Hi Gents,

Music Hull DAC 25.2 - $500 DEMO
Arcam /r –DAC usb - $500
Cambridge DAC Majic  - $530

Best regards

You should add the EE Minimax DAC to your list! I have tried many DACs over the years (Benchmark, Mhdt Paradisea, Altmann Attraction to name a few) but the EE Minimax DAC is a no-brainer at USD 850. Do a search here at A'Circle and you will get some feedback from other owners.

Music Hull DAC 25.2 - $500 DEMO
Arcam /r –DAC usb - $500

Anyone else have an opinion on what DAC to hatch with a REGA Mira and TOTEM Hawsk - My source will be the SONOS system

I think the DAC Magic is $430.

The Rega DAC will most likely be $995.

Simaudio has a stripped down version of their 300D, the 100D for $700.

Beresford's Caiman DAC has a loyal cult-like following.  Never heard it, but the Naim guys love it for the $300 or so it costs.

Some older DACs can be surprisingly good for the money.  I have an old Theta Cobalt 307 that I bought used from a local dealer last summer.  I've since compared it to the DAC Magic and V-DAC at home.  The Cobalt is better to my ears in just about every way.  Power supplies and output stages are very important, it's not just what chip is used.

What's best is really a personal thing.

.  Ive read reviews on all of then and they all have good pros vs cons.  I guess picking any of the above will work quite well

Looks like I will lean towards the ARCAm R/dac - This is what the local dealer recomends (but only sells this brand) as a match to the REGA Mira That I will be purchacing from him.

Just posted to see if the other DAC's at other dealers would be a better match.

The EE DAC is only $750 plus $20 to ship.  Just thought this should be corrected. Carry on

Cant beat the EE DAC. It sounds better than my Transporter and has both SS and tube output. It is  steal for the sound you get. Plus Bill is a super guy to work with!

Try MF M1-DAC (about $700)
It comes with a good case and PSU and IMHO sounds much better than rDAC and Dac-Magic
It has more body/warmth which probably can be attributed to the PSU

sacad,

Not sure if you're still checking this or still looking for a DAC, but I just took home the Rega DAC yesterday.  At this point, it sounds far better than my Apollo did.  I'm not all gaga over a new toy, but this thing is absurdly good.  Far better than anything I've heard near it's price.  I heard it next to the Arcam rDAC, and straight out of the box with no warm up at all, it beat it pretty easily.  I also heard it against the Naim DAC ($3500), and it wasn't outclassed by any means.  It's burning in and the sound is filling out right now.

If you've got $995 and a Rega dealer nearby, you should make it a point to hear it.

I did a comparison between the M1 dac, M1 cd player and V-Dac at a local shop.
The V-dac won. Better Bass.
Mi dac was second and the cd player 3rd.
