Noob here looking to learn!
« on: 7 Dec 2017, 04:42 am »
Hey everyone,

I’m a noob looking to further my interest/skills in speaker building, with an emphasis on building crossovers. I’ve built one small set of speakers with a 5.25” driver and tweeter, and just used a store bought crossover. I’d much rather learn the why’s and how’s, so I can build crossovers to match any chosen drivers. I have a lot more cabinet building skill than I do the electronic side, so I want to even that out. Anyway, thanks for having me, and looking forward to “meeting” everyone.

Welcome to the sweet spot.

I have heard it said that the really great speaker designers spend more time getting the crossover 'right' than any other aspect of a design. This is an aspect where science and art often must intersect ('cookbook' crossovers can often yield 'meh' sound). Good luck with your projects, and we'd definitely be interested in seeing some pictures of your builds.

Welcome Beaker!  Once upon a time, designers sat in anechoic chambers and tweeked by ear until the sound approached their goal.  Today, a decent computer measurement system is the starting point.  One can't design a crossover without one.
