Hey guys.  Been running my little Dell Inspiron 3050 micro desktop as a music server/streamer.  Windows 10 with both Roon and Foobar2000 via foo_touchremote into a preamp with USB DAC.  I made a boot USB with Volumio loaded and was able to get it to play through the USB and DAC, but I really want to send the output to HDMI so that I can pull the digital stream off of it instead of the USB.  I have found that the HDMI output to an audio de-embedder is simply better all around than the USB/DAC option with Roon and Foobar.

Can any of you instruct this total Linux noob how to hack into the configuration files to enable Volumio to send audio out the HDMI audio?  It obviously sees the HDMI since the video for the application is displayed on the monitor attached to the PC via HDMI.

Thanks in advance.

I am not a Linux guy. Does the lower part of this page help?

You can try and edit edit /boot/config.txt and change hdmi_force_hotplug=1

Otherwise try another distro:
www.daphile.org is a decent one

Thanks . . . now can you explain to me how I do that?

I can get to a console prompt via CTL-ALT-F1.

What do I type once there to affect that change?

I'm a total noob with Linux.

BTW, that daphile link doesn't work . . .

oops...

www.daphile.com

for linux you need to navigate to the directory:
 cd /boot/
to list the dir content type
ls -alh

if config.txt is there you can type

vi config.txt

this will edit the file using the built in VI editor program.

Using VI is not a trivial task mind you....

step one, navigate to spot you want to edit with your arrows,
then hit the letter a to change from command mode to insert mode
then make the changes, hit ESC to go back to command mode.
then press :
and type wq
(write and quit)

After reboot it should run the edited config.txt file

Thanks for the very specific instructions JRace.  It is greatly appreciated.  I'll let you know how it turns out after I've had a chance to try it.  Good thing the whole OS is loaded to a thumb drive and only takes a few minutes to re-install in case I break it.

I've downloaded the ISO for Daphile but hesitate to use it.  Don't want to over write my Windows 10 installation on the internal SSD.

well, no config.txt file there, so I added that line to a new one but no change.

guess I'll just have to wait until the developers fix volumio.

by the way, I was unable to reach the Daphile web IP it provided via WiFi so I wasn't even able to get that one working.

I always did my daphile initial connections/setup wired, then move on to wireless after.

Will see if volumio changed.

I have more experience with
www.runeaudio.com

than volumio. You can give that a try (very similar to volumio)

I'll see if I can get it connected to the router via ethernet cable and try that.

Doesn't look like RuneAudio has a version for Intel (x86)

Otherwise, I'll stick with what's working very well for now.

Well, got Daphile up and running and could get no output from the HDMI portion of the audio.  There were two options from which to choose, and neither made a peep.

Frustrating.

Guess I'll have to stick with Windows 10 and the Foobar2000 and Roon options.  Both are producing excellent sounding results and I can control them with my phone.
