4 and 8 Ohm tap on VR-5
« on: 2 Jun 2017, 04:15 pm »
Hi all,

I currently have the VSA VR-5 HSE soon to be VR-5 Anniversary MKII. I have a McIntosh MC452 amp that has 4 and 8 ohm taps. Does anyone use the 8 ohm tap for the Mid/Tweeters and the 4 ohm tap for the woofers?

Thanks
Paul

Try both and use what sounds the best. The ARC REF75 and Rogue ST100 both sounded best using the 8 ohm taps. Congrats on the VR5 Anni MKII. You will love them.

..that's something that makes sense and I've been intending to try it with my VR5 Anniversary MK1.5s and MC601s just as soon as I can spring for 2prs of really decent speaker cables..

Thanks guy's!  :thumb:

Just received a reply from Chuck Hinton at McIntosh.

"Yes, for 3Db more bass, hook the woofers to the 8 and the Mid/tweet to the 4"

Hi Paul,

I have the exact setup as you, McIntosh MC452 with VR-5 Anniversary MKII's!! My Signature Mastrrbuilt cables are hooked to the 8 olm load. Sweet music indeed!

Hi Henry,

Are you using the 8 ohm taps for both the woofers and the Mid/Tweeters?

Thanks

Hi Paul,

I use both 8 ohm's for both! Sounds good as is! Where are you located? I'm in Linthicum Maryland, just outside of Baltimore by BWI airport. Would love to show up my setup!

Hi Henry,

I'm located in Staten Island, NY. Not all that far from you. The below quote is from Chuck Hinton at McIntosh.

"For 3Db more bass, hook the woofers to the 8 and the Mid/tweet to the 4."

Hi Paul,

Your right up I-95! About a 4-5 hour hike depending on traffic. That ohm split sounds interesting. Let me know how it compares to a single 8 ohm use.

Really?   They recommend hooking them up exactly opposite of each module's actual impedance?
