Stereo pre-amp in place of headphone amp?
« on: 18 Aug 2013, 02:18 am »
I use a Keces headphone amp at my computer (with headphones and as a pre-amp to the computer speakers). My biggest gripe is the power switch is in the back of the unit. I was thinking about getting some kind of stereo pre-amp w/headphone capability with the power button in the front.

Suggestions?

Buy a decent headphone amplifier, even though it may work somewhat,it was not designed to drive headphones but high input impendance (5k and over)

I once used headphones with the line o/p of a vcr and it worked somewhat... :green:

Talking about features, the Mytek stereo Dsd have a power switch in front with preamp.

However, the headphone out could be better..
Which headphone model/s you have?

Depending upon your budget and needs I can recommend two units that will work well.  They are both combination headphone amps and preamps.

Woo Audio WA2 and Eddie Current Zana Deux - both are tube based.  The Woo is the cheaper of the two - I own one and like it a lot.  I've listened to the Zana Deux, and would have bought one if I wasn't so cheap.

Or the Manley Neo-Classic 300B although $5800 isn't pocket change.

Right now, I'm using Sennheiser cans. I'm looking at something solid state like Burson products, not $5800 tube gear.

The Sub 1k Soloist is a respected headamp/pre. But, it only have input selector and gain switch in the front.
