looking for an outboard motor pod...
« on: 20 Nov 2014, 08:27 pm »
Hi there, I am looking for a good outboard motor, like the VPI stainless steel motor pod of old, a teres or something belt driven for my custom plinth.  I like the VPI rim drive but it makes the overall dimensions of the table a tad too wide.  Here's a pic of the table.

See how it sticks out?

Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Wayner

Seriously, it does look like you are running out of room with whatever your table is sitting on. How about a new maple base for that bad boy. Lots of people like the rim drive......

One more thing, can't the motor fit behind the table?.............and I'd still get a new maple base.

TTWeights sells their motor and controller separately now.  That gives you the option of rim or belt drive.

Thanks Bob, I did check the TTW stuff, too pricey, unfortunately, $2200 for the motor and controller.

I am looking for simplicity...back to belt or tape drive.

Wayner, yes, I could put it behind the plinth, but it would be right were the backarm would drop the cartridge down, don't know if having that right there would introduce any unwanted resonance, etc.
Maple?  Yes, well, That may be an option for sure.  How much would something like 25"x20"x2" be?

Thanks

Hi Sonny,
Have you considered the Origin Live DC motor kit?   This got great reviews and is used as an upgrade for Linn, Rega, etc.  A motor and controller start at $500.  They also have an upgraded motor and controller.  I think you max out at $1300.  Even have custom made pods:

The rim drive alternative is Teres Verus motor and controller.  Some people consider this better than VPI rim drive:

Got my original.  You are more than welcome to try it and see if it is what you want.  Sitting in a box with the old Jr. towers. 600RPM motor, SDS pulley. We can swap out for your 300RPM motor.

Cheers,
Geary

Not a big fan of Mapleshades, may be able to source it somewhere else...

Sonny,

Try Timbernation.com for the maple platform. He will quote you for a custom size if he already doesn't have your size available. I have purchased some of his platforms, and have been very pleased with them.

Dan

P.S.  Do you still have that mono Ace cart available?
