Most popular audiophile speakers

I'm wondering what you all think of when you think of popular audiophile loudspeakers.

These can $200 monitors though whatever...

Maybe it's the speakers you had before you built your GR speakers?  Maybe you still have them?

Let's hear what you have to say!

It would be much easier and a shorter list for me to post the most musical speakers imho.

I heard the KEF LS-50's at my buddy's place, now I understand why those are a run-a-way best sellers.

The first two that came to me were Vandersteen 2ce and Magnepan 1.7. Both pretty popular loudspeakers. I owned both. Why are you asking? Can you share?

I had those little Pioneer 22's before I got a pair of Carnegies designed by Danny.

The thing to remember is that Andrew Jones who designed the 22's has large scale working for him. The sheer numbers produced can keep the costs down.

In some ways, I actually preferred the 22's, now sold. They didn't do everything great but at the same time, they didn't do anything badly. I could crank up music that was badly recorded. Now, my system is very "sensitive"....and so am I!

So while on great recordings, the Carnegies (equivalent to the GR N1) are much better, I can't crank them up on a lot of recordings. I just can't handle how they sound. (Though I haven't spent a whole lot of money on my mid-level system.) While there are many things better on these (detail, bass output, etc.), almost every speaker is a compromise.

The first speakers I fell in love with were Yamaha NS 500s.

Recently, when I was in Taiwan, I got to listen to the Usher Mini Dancer ll Diamonds. Shockingly good sound for such an inexpensive pair of speakers. (They're much cheaper on that side of the ocean.)

ProAc Response D2 monitors and D28 floor standing speakers.

I expect to offer different names upon my return from Axpona in a few weeks.

The Magnepan IIB's I had really benefitted from the crossover upgrade I did by replacing the mylar caps with polypropylene caps in the mid '80s.  Had them until I got a pair of B&W 805 Matrix speakers.

Way back in my early days? - The big Infinity IRS IV and Martin Logan (can't remember the model -Statement?)

Mainstream? - tougher call. Vandersteen and Thiel for upper, Maggies & smaller ML for reasonable.

Sure! I just want to know all the opinions on what is out there.  Getting new speakers are where the fun is at here.  I run it so that if you help with the crossover or speaker sample, you get the upgrade at a reduced price or free.

Well, Dahlquist and Vandersteen first turned my head around with their time coherent designs.

Bose is your answer then.  I'm sure they would be the most popular.
