Title: COLLEGE FOOTBALL RETURNS!
Post by: Mudslide on 3 Aug 2015, 11:25 pm
Hey, it's that time of year again...when everyone's favorite team is undefeated and full of hope!  Let's know what you hear is going on with your team and what you expect.  Lots of room for feelings and opinions here.

Mine?  Well, you guys know I'm an Oregon Duck fanboy.  I'm looking for them to get back into the College Football Playoff (CFP) again...even without Heisman winning qb, Marcus Mariota.  (We had 7 offensive starters injured and out of the first ever CFP final game...which went to Ohio State. )

The team is absolutely loaded with talent everywhere....guys without the 5* status, but coached up to peak abilities.  This team has been underrated for years, and is again this year.  My only concern is a full d-backfield of new starters and/or green freshmen.  I think, though, that Oregon rocks again this year!!  Watch for rb (Rolls) Royce Freeman to be in the national sports news as the next possible Heisman winner.   Look for the early season national televised game against Michigan State.

Now where is the Michigan State love?   :P

Hey Mudslide

Looking forward to the season myself. There's nothing like college football :thumb:

Never attended Penn State or even went away to college. My daughter will be a junior this year so you can say Im living it through her

The effects of the sanctions really showed last year. The offensive line had major issues putting together a running game and keeping defensive lineman off Hackenberg. Golden Boy was sacked 44 times last season. An average of about 4 times per game.
This year they will have their full allotment of scholarships.

Games I'm looking forward to:

1) Rutgers
Last year was their first year in the Big 10 and Penn State was their first interconference game.
To say that Penn State fans were treated badly at Rutgers was an understatement. Assaults were even reported. Rutger's President did release a formal apology.
This year its in Happy Valley. Hope all goes well

2) Maryland
Also their first year in the Big10. Maryland players refused to shake hands at the coin toss which caused a stir of course. Maryland President released a formal apology.
Hoping for a major beatdown in this game :icon_lol:

3) Ohio State
What can you say when their 3rd string quarterback take them to and wins the Championship.
The Lions did give then all they could handle last year at State College taking them into double OT.
Two very questionable calls/ no calls might have swayed things differntly
http://onwardstate.com/2015/08/01/big-ten-coordinator-of-officials-admits-officiating-mistakes-in-penn-state-ohio-state-game/

4) Michigan
White Out game. One of the toughest venues to play at least for these OSU players
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWlhr7Dh3jQ
last years game between the two was the worst game I've seen in a while. It wasnt a matter of who was the better team but who was the worst. We'll see what Jim Harbaugh put together.
Still have a huge smile from the 4 OT win in 2013
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgSqzckZg-4

5) Illinois
I have tickets for that game :D

Nice post Emil.  My wife and I are alums (1978) and still live in State College about 3 miles from campus.  It's nice to get back to a level
playing field as far as scholarships. Probably take another year or two to get back to full depth but recruiting is going great!

Enjoy the games!!  WE ARE!!!

I'm a Michigan State fan (son and daughter graduated from there, still live 30 miles away).  Growing up it was (and still is in most of the state) easier to be a U/M fan.  Even searching for "Michigan State football" brings up on top an article about Ohio State forecasted to win the Big 10 with a picture of Harbaugh.   :nono:  Will we ever get past being the ugly step child?

And what's this continued crap about a conference called Big 10 that has 14 schools?  Nothing against Rutgers, Maryland, Penn State, or Nebraska but the identity has been lost.  And why can't they come up with a new/better name?

Am happy for their #6 ranking (less attention versus a higher ranking with the whole season ahead of us to move up).  But honestly college football teams shouldn't be ranked until October and basketball until January.  Too many unknowns to make good guesses and if wrong the teams profit or suffer under that early ranking.  And it leaves too much leeway for perennial favorites (like Norte Dame) to be given high rankings early and only lightly punished for defeats or close wins during the season (who thankfully we don't play this year).

The Oregon game will be a real test, but is in East Lansing this time around (Oregon is one of my favorite teams).  We should have at least 6 wins going into Ann Arbor mid-season and hopefully 9 wins before traveling to Columbus on November 21st.  Regardless Michigan State always sells lots of bowl tickets so we should get a good draw.

Thanks, Don

I'm on Long Island and have followed the Jets/Giants for years but nothing gets my stomach in a knot like Penn State gameday.

Had the pleasure of seeing then at Yankee Stadium for the Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College.
Crowd must have been roughly 80% PSU fans. It was Happy Valley in the South Bronx

More Michigan State love right here!  Class of 2003.

I've been dreaming of the Oregon game for months now.  I'm even aging some Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout for the occasion!

Fine post, Emil.  I love PSU.  I have a friend teaching there.  I think the team got handed a bad deal by the NCAA.  Thank goodness they corrected the aggravation.  My Ducks have faced some bad sports too.  Arizona fans threw bottles at our players and cheerleaders from the stands last year.  Hospitalized one girl.  I am not a fan of that team.  I hope we put up another basketball score on them.  Also, FSU are really bad sports.  After Oregon smoked 'em in the Rose Bowl last year, they ran off the field without handshakes...including their principle criminal, Jameis Winston.  (He later claimed that they played an even game with UO and could easily have won!  OH YEAH?!  59-20 was real close all right.   )

JLM, HFO...that game should be a great game.  I know you guys are craving a rematch...and I worry that all those returning players you have are going to be really hard to beat.  But HFO...that Breakfast Stout should drown whatever sorrows may befall.  A good, clean, close game is what I'm hoping for.

And LOL...you guys leave Nebraska alone.     Oregon's poor cousin, Oregon State...their coach just took over the Huskers.  Looks like the B1G just got a little stale.

So how many uniform combos are they wearing this year?

PSU is taking a step backwards with the removal of the players names from their jerseys.

They're marketing it as " black shoes, basic blues, no names, all game"

While I like all the snazzy Oregon uniforms I also like the very traditional Penn State look.  Still a fan of Pappa Joe.  Am opposed to putting player's names, company names, conference identification, or bowl game on the uniforms.  Plenty of ads without plastering them all over.  Colleges shouldn't be pimping the players so overtly.  And isn't this supposed to be a team sport?

17 tractors included lawn mowers, gator, and a push peddle toy.  We grew cash crops in southern Michigan.  The only livestock we had were some cats, our dog, and my brother.  Sorry for your Dad being photographed on a Farmall, Grandpa had the first F-14 to come to Michigan on rubber tires and Dad traded a pair of Super M Farmalls for his first John Deere, a 70 that I learned on.  The 4010 is 53 years old and still going strong.  Dad pointed out that no John Deere tractor has ever lost value!

I have to say this about Mariota.

Those who say/said that Jameis is superior or equal to MM have not watched any film of him when he was healthy.  And the only reason I can see the criminal Jameis doing so well was that he played in the ACC, aka Sisters-of-the-Poor conference.  JLM () could even toss td passes in that conference.  I'll enjoy watching their NFL careers diverge.

I think you're right about the team, Mike.  If whoever qbs the team can get the ball regularly to the unbelievably talented play-makers...the Ducks will have an awesome season.  I think the defense will likely be adequate to win games 49-30.

Auburn is getting a LOT of love from the pundits for taking the SEC!  I hope that young qb is all that everyone says.   :thumb:

A little too much love if you ask me. JJ is more or less untested, but I have hope for his abilities as a quarterback. I just don't see him as a dual threat like Marshall or Cam. On the defensive end, there was so much quit in last years team. Muschamp will hopefully reignite the fire. Having Lawson back will definitely help. One of star receivers (Duke Williams) was suspended for the bowl game last year. Now this:

"Auburn wide recevier D'haquille "Duke" Williams has missed the last two practices because of what Gus Malzahn is calling a "discipline issue." Malzahn finally spoke to the media about Williams' status, refusing to give a timetable for his return.

"Duke Williams was not at practice for the second day in a row like some of you noticed," Malzahn said, via AL.com, on Saturday. "He had a discipline issue we're taking care of, when he takes care of that he'll back on the field. I'll make that decision and I'll let you know when he'll be back. Nobody's bigger than the team around here. That's between him and me and I won't answer any more questions about that."

Williams did not play in the Tigers' Outback Bowl loss to Wisconsin after an off-field issue, but things appeared to be moving the in the right direction, according to Auburn's coaches, during spring practice. Obviously a big part of the Tigers offense when he's active, Williams led Auburn in receptions and finished a narrow second in receiving yards in 2014, despite only appearing in 10 games due to injury and the bowl suspension"

 :duh:

Ugh... :(

Going into this season, Oregon had arguably the best backfield in the nation.  Now they have half of arguably the best backfield in the nation.  Our guy (who demolished Florida State last year) Thomas Tyner has been declared out for the season with shoulder surgery this week.  At least we still have Heisman candidate, 'Rolls' Royce Freeman to carry the load.

Dang...the Ducks played the National Championship game last year with more than half of its season starters out with injuries.  The bug has stricken again.

Let's face it. No top High School player wants to be part of a rebuilding program. For them its 3 years and out.

I see all the traditional football school alums and friends are chiming in.  My school is not known for it's football but I still have season tickets and tailgate to most games.  It's a great time to reconnect with friends from decades ago.  I graduated 30 years ago.

I see a Hokie here.  I will see us beat you again before I die, I hope.

I will be at the Rose Bowl in two weeks to see us playing the Bruins.  Yes, I am going to a tailgate.  That may be the highlight for me, as it often is. :shake:

Reality settles in :bawl:

Penn State 10   Temple 27

PSU looked sharp on their first couple of drives taking the a 10-0 lead putting to rest my anxiety that the problems PSU had with the offensive line and play calling had not improved. It would have been best if I shut the TV off then.
In a nutshell, QB Hackenberg was sacked 10 times and one time during a two man rush. ( 44 times last year).
Even when he did have time, seems more concerned with getting sacked then looking downfield. I believe he is suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome. This kid is being touted as a top NFL draft pick next year.
Offensive play calling was just awful. Seems no  attempts were made to change what was not working. They were just dull and predictable. 80 yards on 28 carries, nine first downs and 183 total yards. Punted 9 times and completed 11 passes.
Things are not sitting well today over in Embarrassed Valley. Heads will be on a stick in front of the Old Main building and the candidates are Head Coach Franklin, Offensive Coordinator John Donovan, and some will argue QB Hackenberg if things do not improve against Buffalo next week.

On a positive note,  #1 PSU Women's volleyball defeated #2 Stanford :thumb:

So how was your weekend?

Gotta say those Buckeyes looked good. And that was without 3 starting WR's and their best defensive player. I remember they used to call Kordell Stewart "Slash" for everything he could do on the field. Braxton Miller looked like he may get a nickname before the season is over...that was impressive what he did last night.

Yeah, VT gave us trouble in the 2nd Q.  Don't know if you caught it or not....but the QB took a real shot sometime in the first half.  Then at halftime he was caught on camera talking with another teammate in the locker room...something like "it'll take a hell of a lot more than that to take me out"!  ...not sure if that footage made it to the OSU sideline, but the big boys really let him have it.  Too bad it resulted in a broken collarbone.....VT wasn't the same without him.  Hate to see a serious injury at anytime.....but as I understand it a collarbone break may be 6-8 weeks, so maybe he'll return towards the end of the season.

Media does not belong in the locker room at halftime, IMO.

Of course I love Braxton.  But even non-Buckeye fans have to admire his character.  Sticking with his team when he could have left to start QB somewhere else, or to the NFL....switching positions to make room.  I really think it'll help his draft stock.

Completely agree. BTW, that spin move was "all world." Great athlete and appears to be a great kid too.

Mizzou opened with a 34-3 win over an instate FCS program. After watching Gary Pinkel for 15 years, I've learned that he is not going to run up the score on an FCS opponent, especially an in-state one. The move to the Southeastern conference created some scheduling holes through 2016 for the Tigers as well as Texas A & M that result in games with schools like Southeast Missouri State. Mizzou's defense is going to be fine. There is young talent very capable of following in the footsteps of Kony Ealy, Shane Ray and Markus Golden. Remember the name Drew Lock. He is a true freshman QB that is #2 on the depth chart and is the real deal. He was one of the top 3 performers at the Elite 11 camp last year and was 6-10, 134 yards and 10 points in the 3 series he played, including the first series of the 2nd quarter.

I watched much of this game just for the helmets alone. I have a lot of respect for Oregon being an Auburn fan. Hell, at least Oregon played tough and fought hard til the end. Auburn shite the bed the entire game and had to take an FCS team (that was supposed to be a 42 point dog) to OT to win. Auburn has no business being ranked as high as they are given their level of play. If we don't drop out of the top 10 after yesterday, we certainly will after next week.

Michigan State at Michigan

QB issues and defensive coordinator issues.  The DC is sort of clueless.  Hopefully he'll retire at the end of the season and we'll get UO grad, Justin Wilcox, to leave USC and take over.  The first string qb has been injured.

Yep, it's a question.  But my take is that Michigan hasn't beaten anyone of substance...with the possible exception of the basting of Northwestern.  And I question that game, and the NU team, from a lot of perspectives.  I know they beat Stanford.  But Stanford was daydreaming through that game and played terribly.

I feel for the kid.  The pain will linger for quite some time time for this young man.

You can bet that every special teams coach will be going over this scenario this week.

Anyway, Penn Sate would be more than happy to have him on their team. PSU averaged 35 yards per punt last night putting the Buckeyes in excellent field position resulting in at least a couple of touchdowns or having OSU punt and having PSU starting several drive with the 10 yard line.
Speaking of punters, check out Cameron Johnston for OSU.  That kid can drop the ball down within the 10 yard line from anywhere last night.

Conspiracy? Could it be true? Am I so naive?

This weekend Penn State is playing 14th rank Michigan. Conspiracy theorist believe that the powers that be at the Big 10 have already spoken to the refereeing crew to ensure that Michigan wins or at least has the best possible chance. Of course Michigan may just blow out Penn State on their own but just in case......
Why? Because a win for Penn State means nothing for the Big 10 but a loss for Michigan can drop then out of the rankings.

Crazy?
Last year against Ohio State. Penn State took then to double OT and lost. Same Scenario. Win for PSU meant nothing to the Big10.

Dont underestimate the importance of the unis to recruits

http://picksixpreviews.com/fashion-wars.html

First, we asked: “Uniforms have a great impact on my perception of a team.”   The recruits could answer 'Very True', 'Moderately True', 'Moderately False', 'Very False', or 'N/A'.  Only 11 out of 100 prospects responded 'Very False',  while 72 responded either 'Moderately True' or 'Very True'.  Next we asked: “A school’s uniform will impact my college decision.”  The results were: 'Very True' (7), 'Moderately True' (26), 'Moderately False' (24), and 'Very False' (31).  To be honest, I expected even more 'Very False' responses than there were.  I imagine most prospects place education, winning tradition, and other criteria much higher than uniform design

Say what you will....

Pre - Oregon University uniform and Nike marketing blitz = Ducks were awful to average.

Post - Oregon University uniform and Nike marketing blitz = Very top tier record (third only to tOSU and 'Bama over last few years).

I agree with you, Emil...PSU has nice, neat looking unis.  But other than OU, I like FSU second best.  I wonder if they take 71 year old football players.  LOL.

Speaking of 'Bama...I have a prediction.  It's just an intuitive guess.  But given their qb situation and other "USC" (entitlement and staff) issues...I believe they're going to lose 'at least' two games this year and not make the CFP.  YMMV.

My Nittany Lions start the season against Kent State Saturday afternoon. Whole  bunch of new faces this year as well as a new offensive coordinator, Joe Moorehead from Fordham and offensive line coach Matt Limegrover from Minnesota.
QB Hackenberg was sacked 44 times in 2014 and and 38 times in 2015. Poor kid.Rushing game suffered greatly also. It was the defense that kept them in the game to a point

Here is Hackenberg getting sacked vs Temple last year against a two man rush in the 1st game on 2015 :duh:

This year head coach Franklin has his full complement of scholarships and players her personally recruited.

Weeks two and three are against in state rivals: Pitt and Temple.

Nittany Lions fan here.

You assume? You mean you didnt watch it?
What a rollercoaster of emotions I had during that game. Depression to euphoria to depression and so on .
Pitt led 28 to 7 in the second. quarter. PSU rallied in the 4th quarter with 18 points bringing it to 42 to 39 Pitt. With less than 2 minutes PSU was down to the Pitt 31. With a field goal to tie, QB McSorely went for it all a threw weak pass for an interception in the endzone. Game over. Rookie mistake.
Proud of my Nitts . Showed alot of heart. Never gave up :thumb:

See you next year at State College :D

Hey Pgbciny

You guys are coming Oct 22nd for the White Out game. . Took you guys 2 overtimes to beat us two years ago. Not easy to win in Happy Valley in a White Out and that was the year you won the National Championships. We wont talk about last tears game

Anyway, you did have a bit of help from the refs :icon_lol:

Couldn't review the interception call because of "equipment malfunction"?
Not one ref watching the game clock?

I'll be on the 40 yd line, row 72 in the nosebleeds :thumb:

Yep, we have the ref’s in our pocket.   I hate bad calls, no matter what way they go.  I seem to recall some poor ones in Penn St's favor in that game as well but I don’t have the Youtube documentary to prove that….. maybe just my personal slant on history?    :)

Yes they did!  Just got home from the game, WOW, Lamar Jackson is s the real deal!  The entire team played great across all 3 phases of the game.  I haven't verified, but was told that is the worse loss Fl State has ever experienced.  Great game!  Go Cards!!

So my Nittany Lions took an expected beating this past weekend against Michigan but we did have one highlight

Our kicker Joey Julius
(http://sportsmasher.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/joey-julius-fat-penn-state-kicker-296x197.jpg)

Thats right. 5 ft 10 and 259 pounds.....as a freshman. he's now 271 as a sophomore

Joey is not the type of kicker who just waits back and hopes the guy is tackled way before they get to him.

get a load of this agianst Kent State:

and this against Michigan:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX3sQLcLjYQ

Ohio State in 3 weeks. Oh boy.

If we get embarrassed like we did in Michigan and at home no less, things will get ugly at Happy Valley.

Sanctions really did take its toll on the program but thats another story

Random thoughts....

Louisville...oh my!!

Sorry to be absent for a while, gents.  I've broken my hip and just had surgery to fix it...and it seems my Ducks aren't far behind.     (Thank goodness for music and great speakers to quell the anguish.)

I'm looking for Franklyn to get canned...sorry Emil.  Cards and tOSU half of the 4 in the CFP.  I'm still with Bama (and all the drama going on there) to miss it.  Ducks 13 game win streak against Washington will end this year.

Oh yeah, I still hate tOSU for crushing my ducks in that first CFP, pgb.  LOL.

Sorry to hear that Mudslide. was wondering where you've been.

Just looked at The Ducks schedule and it looks rough with ranked teams like Washington, Stanford and and Utah.

Franklin? I've read good reasons to fire him and good reasons to keep him but dont think he's the coach to compete with Meyer, Harbaugh and Dantonio.
he does have on of the youngest teams in the league and is feeling the worst due to the sanctions. Moreover, the linebackers are thin due to injuries with freshman having to start.
I say he has one more year.....maybe. Maybe not if the fans dont see any signs of improvement as the season goes on.
I have tickets to the tOSU game and if they get Michiganed at home, the calls for a fireing will intense for sure
Now that Les Miles is available there has been some talk on the blogs about approaching him.

Turbulent times ahead for sure

Thanks, Emil.  We heal eventually...even at my ($*%*#*^) age.

I see Miles going to Notre Dame after they finish getting creamed all season...even though PSU is a better fit.

The Ducks could easily, probably should be 4-0, in spite of some crappy play.  Don't give up on 'em just yet.  But yeah...a tough row to hoe.

Franklin needs to step up his recruiting. A tough task with the sanctions and negativity around the program.   Not sure if Miles is that guy though.  Looking forward to WhiteOut.... always a tough fight!

Its a long season boys! Although I like the way Buckeye's games have gone so far, they are super young.... just wonder when that youth will show up... hopefully when it does we can recover!

I'll be in the Horseshoe tomorrow!  Earle Bruce is dotting the I in Script Ohio.  I saw Jack "The Bear" do it!  Its a rare treat given to non band members!  Go Bucks!

The Vols had some thrills this year but me thinks Alabama showed us they are not messing around. We played them very strong with lesser teams the last 5 or so years but this team is on a mission. Jalon Hurts was very impressive... and a FRESHMAN... yikes!!

My Bucks pulled it out but there is a large margin between them and The Tide.

The playoffs look pretty set for now with the top 4 w the exception of the OSU/Mich game . Good to see that rivalry back in prominence.

But who knows??? They have to play the games and upsets happen.

In PSU's case, they were sanctioned by the NCAA and eventually withdrawn but not after much damage to the schools reputation and football program. No charges were filed against Paterno and the three other PSU officials that were charged are still waiting for their day in court. In fact, charges against the three are being dropped one as time as time goes. My bet is that they will eventually be all dropped and then what? Sorry?

I don't share your disdain for the "media", and tend to think it is a positive influence in our world. This first thing every dictator does is to control information.

Yes, thanks, Emil.  I'm up and around and walking only with a slight limp.  No walker, no cane!  They tell me the lingering pain eventually goes away.  It's not too bad, all things considered.

The Ducks (great pics, emil)...are MUCH too young this year and have had a lot of injuries.  The coaches are on super-hot seats...but I don't think it's deserved...yet!  This year sucks duck eggs...but the recruiting to position needs is positive, so far.  Since I began fanboying Oregon in '92, this has been the ugliest year, but one with considerable hope...especially at qb.  A youthful, unhyped, true freshman is setting school records in his first three starts.  ...  Including Marcus Mariota's records.  (All freshmen O-line, too.)

And lastly, I have to opine a little on the election media coverage, too:
1.  May it come to a painful conclusion soon.   :(
2.  The media is biased BOTH WAYS...strongly so, with marriage and familial ties of media moguls and top political agents.   :duel:         (Follow the money.)

12-1 for Clemson on the year. Their only loss came at their home field to MY PITTSBURGH PANTHERS. Hail to Pitt!!!!!!!!!!!!! H2P!!

Helluva game.

It was a great game. Never thought anybody could come from 14 down and beat Bama. Hats off to Clemson. Back to back great games for the CFB Championship.

With all due respect to Lamar Jackson who is a helluva player and Derrick Henry, last year's Heisman winner, Deshaun Watson is the best player in college football and has been for two years. Shame he didn't win a Heisman.

Completely agree Laura.

That was impressive last night. He took a beating from Alabama's defense and got better as the game went along. He made me a believer last night. Seems like a really good, humble kid too.

Hope you are well and had a good Christmas and New Years. I'm hoping my schedule will allow me to attend AXPONA.

Also agree with vinyl_lady. If there was ever a better National Championship game played, I can't think of it! Unlike the old days, this 4-team CFB play-off format leaves no doubt.

Yeah, it's a shame too that Heisman voting doesn't take into account final bowl games. Given Jackson's Citrus Bowl performance (and Louisville's drubbing) compared to Watson's two-year resume - consecutive championship appearances and a come-from-behind last second title win ... there should be little argument about who's the best player in college football! IMHO

Yep, a game for the ages.

Last night and the Rose Bowl were some of the best games I've seen in a while.

When Clemson scored last touchdown, I cheered and woke up my dog.

I don't really like Clemson, but I hate Bama.

Had a really nice Christmas and New Year's after a big push to wrap up a lot of work by the end of 2016. Now I can relax and spend more time spinning vinyl. Hope you can make AXPONA. I'll be there!

Don't expect there'll be much dissent about judging this one as a game for the ages.  Loved Clemson winning it.  I don't hate Alabama, just that it makes the rivalry so much better.  Decent chance we could see round three, at least on the "it could happen" level.  Now that would be something.

Well, everyone is welcome to their own opinion.  I will say that if you put Lamar Jackson behind Clemsons O line there are few QB records that wouldn't have been eclipsed this season.  The second half of the season was not good for Louisville's O line (and D for that matter).  I am very hopeful the Cards can get their act together in those areas for what will likely be Lamar's final season in a Cards uniform.  If we don't we will have squandered an outstanding opportunity to fully utilize an amazing athlete.

BTW, If I recall correctly, the difference between first and second in the Heisman voting was the 6th greatest since it's inception.

Best,
Ed

Deshaun won every other possible award rather than the Heisman this year and had votes not been cast so early, he would have won that award as well.

Lamar does not have Watson's maturity and it shows in big games.  Deshaun is able to read defenses, make split second decisions, etc. We catch it on replay or slow motion while he deals with it live.

He had his problems with interceptions this season, but the amount of balls tipped, plays blown by receivers, or picks taken after a receiver touched the ball accounted for the majority.

I am a Clemson grad and a fan for since as long as I can remember.  I will gladly accept that my school beat the unbeatable and won it all, and take that over Deshaun winning the Heisman.

I do not think putting Lamar Jackson into a Clemson uniform at quarterback would have garnered the same results.

And I'm not trying to be argumentative, what's done is done, simply responding to your statement.

Escott, congratulations on a great season, you certainly have reason to be proud of your team.

With that said, a couple of clarifications are in order.

When I read your response my kneejerk reaction to your comment about putting Lamar in Orange was that no one said anything resembling that, however re-reading my post I see how you came to that conclusion.  My point was not to put him on Clemson's team but to note that he was running for his life for most of the 2nd half of the season and still managed a pretty remarkable year.

With regard to to Deshaun winning every other award this year, well that is simply not accurate, this is what I found with a quick search on the net:

Lamar Jackson 2016
Heisman Trophy winner (nation's best player)
Maxwell Award winner (nation's best player)
Walter Camp National Player of the Year
Associated Press National Player of the Year
Sporting News National Player of the Year
Consensus first-team All-American (AP, FWAA, Walter Camp Football Foundation, AFCA, The Sporting News, USA TODAY, ESPN, Sports Illustrated.)
ACC Player of the Year (media and coaches)
ACC Offensive Player of the Year (media and coaches)
Davey O'Brien Trophy finalist (nation's best quarterback)
Manning Award finalist (nation's best quarterback)
Three-time Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week (first-ever)

Deshaun Watson 2016
2016 Davey O'Brien Award
2016 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award
And of course the national championship, not an award but any player worth his salt would gladly trade the personal accolades to win.

One final thought before bowing out of this thread, both of these young men, Lamar 20, Deshaun 21, have handled the bright lights and accolades with great humility and made their mothers proud. They should be allowed to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Best,
Ed

I give the award for best college game to Auburn a few years ago when they came from behind after the clock ran out to beat Alabama on a missed field goal return. Is it possible for anything to top that in a national championship game?

Looking forward to this year with high expectations unlike last year when all we wanted was a winning season.

AP has the Nits at #6. They were #25 last year at this time

Ohio State at #2, Wisconsin at #9 and Michigan at #11

Alabama at #1 and Clemson #5 (Really?)

So, how is your team looking this year?

Looks like Bama is the big dog again. I was shocked at how a smaller university pushed USC hard most of the game. They ran out of gas and SC capitalized in the 4th qtr.  Oregon will probably only win five games this year. We will know more after the Nebraska game. They have Stanford, Washington and UCLA away from home.

Here is my ranking

1-Alabama, 2-Oklahoma, 3-Clemson, 4-USC, 5-Penn State, 6-Michigan, 7-Ohio State (I think that they may end up out of the top 10 if they don't figure out their passing game and pass defense, Indiana gave them fits and then OU exposed them), 8-Washington, 9-Oklahoma State, 10-Wisconsin

I am still not sold on USC, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma State (running game and defense are suspect, and they are my team).  Lets see how the next 3-4 games go.

I guess AP see going 2-0 against lesser teams carries more weight than 1-1 with a loss from a top 5 team ( Oklahoma)

1) Alabama
2) Oklahoma
3) Clemson
4) USC
5) Penn State :thumb:
6) Washington
7) Michigan
8 ) Ohio State
9) Oklahoma State
10) Wisconsin

Yea Ducks!   :bounce:  UO got ranked this week!  I still have some trepidation, but it's looking better and better for a decent sized turnaround for my boys.  (Thank goodness they got rid of that coaching staff from last year.)  The offense is lethal and the defense is 100% improved over last year's debacle.  By year's end, both the QB (Herbert) and RB (Freeman) will be All-Americans.  Rosen and Darnold get all the press, likely because they're from Los Angeles teams.  But Herbert is the superior QB (and gets little press).  Watch for him.

Year after year, UCLA gets hyped and falls on its patoot.  I warned you that Stanford is a shadow of its former self.  And USC is, as usual, over-hyped.  And...I might have been dead wrong about PSU.  They 'could' be the real deal with a real deal coach.     Get 'em, Emil!

And one question whose answer evades me...how does Saban continue to get the top recruits (though this year may be an exception)??  He's kind of a pain in the A$$ and isn't all that innovative.  I know he puts guys in the "League".  But they're already the best college players when he recruits them.   :dunno:

Oklahoma State Alum and fan.  I won't be convinced that the Cowboys are for real until they play a good team.  Their running game is suspect and their defense has not been tested.  They should have more sacks and take aways. The passing game is for real though. They will be tested by TCU next week.

Go Pokes!

Penn State, USC, Ohio State and Michigan still need to prove themselves.  They have their weaknesses.
Alabama looked bad against Colorado State and they are beatable.

I think that this year, the number one spot is up for grabs more than the last few years.

I just saw an interesting factoid.  The Ducks' Royce Freeman currently leads the nation in TDs with 9.  Tied for second with 6 is his backup, Kani Benoit.  Amazing.

Especially when those young DBs get their sea legs...the Ducks look to have a pretty decent defense.  (Thank you Jim Leavitt.)

Greyhound Fan...OKSt still is pretty intriguing.  Mason Rudolph...whoa...that man can dish it and the receivers are first rate.  Now they need to develop some consistency, I think.

Right now I would probably put Clemson 1, Oklahoma 2 and Alabama 3 after CSU gave Bama fits.  I would like to see Bama play OU right now and get an ass whipping against a great Passing game and defense.  Of course the game against CSU could be a fluke.  If Okie State is for real, then I would put them at 4 but I think that they are posers and probably more like a 7 team but I think 4-10 teams are interchangeable for now.

The problem with Okie State is that they score so fast that the defense is on the field a lot.  And the games have been a blowout by half time and the second and third team defense plays the second half.  Thats when teams have been scoring on them.

I agree completely guys, I'm pretty sure everybody knows it's a rigged system and just turns a blind eye because of the multi millions involved.  It's amazing that schools like Notre Dame and Stanford that maintain academic standards can compete at all.  Now it's all about recruiting and with this much money involved of course everybody that wants to win cheats.  They really need to revamp the whole system, pay these kids a decent wage and provide comprehensive health care plans that extend to after their college playing days, it's effectively their full time job after all.  In the present system the coaches, schools, and tv networks pocket millions while the kids are left in the cold.  Especially if they're seriously injured, then they get thrown in the trash with no NFL career and no health insurance.  r/

I agree, but these guys should get a stipend and a percentage of any revenue for money made off their star power and merchandise sold.  The issue is, what about the average player.  I think that you need to spread the money around to all the players equally.  Even the walk on's.

Also, people forget that with out the football revenue, they would not have the fabulous football facilities and money for other sports.

Another issue is the disparity among programs.  If players are to get a stipend or merchandise revenue, then it has to be equal among all programs and universities.  It is a complex issue.

It's a little of both, I think.  I was impressed with the SDSU defense.  They're a bit one dimensional on offense, but have enough with that fine scatback of theirs.  Stanford doesn't have an experienced O-line, so they kind of plod along with that so-called pro offense.  I'm not a fan of the Cardinal or their coach.  (Being from UC Berkeley...we're supposed to hate the Furd...and do.)

Sheesh, Okla. State is killing themselves.  2 Stupid plays in the first quarter and a stupid personal foul.  The OSU play calling has been terrible.  They have one of the top 5 QB's in the nation and are trying to run the ball too much.  It hurt them the first 2 offensive series.  2 of their offensive lineman are out so I guess they are being too cautious.  Hope the second half is better but I have a bad feeling about this game.  I think their defense is being exposed against a good team.

Sorry to say I was right about the OSU Cowboys.  They are over rated.   Have to give credit to TCU though.  Great game plan and a good team.  The Cowboys were their own worst enemy.  They tried to establish the run game early when they should have established the passing game and then take advantage of the run.  They got behind the first quarter, gave TCU confidence and they never recovered.  Mental mistakes, poor game plan, play calling and penalties killed them along with not having 2 starters on the offensive line.

I'll trade 'em problems with the Ducks.  Ducks lost their All-American running back, quarterback, both for 6-8 weeks, the backup qb, a middle linebacker, 2 safeties, 3 receivers, an offensive lineman, and a partridge in a pear tree.  Oh yeah, and another safety was dq'ed for an invisible targeting.  The tv broadcasters were kinda stunned.  They said, "The only one not injured in this game is the Duck [mascot]."

I think Oregon just went from an 8 or 9 win season to maybe 6.  They only have one healthy scholarship qb, now.  And he is a true freshman.  Double ugh.

You got that right, Fred.

The coaching has been first rate and there will be successes.  But the excellence represented by Freeman and Herbert (THE best qb on the west coast by all standards) is gone.  I hope for fast healing of the other injuries, particularly the backup qb, Alie, and the receivers.  But the really strange thing going on with the Ducks...for the first time since the "Gang Green" of the '90s, they are developing an awesome defense.   :o  Hopefully that will carry them through this season to at least a minor bowl game.

And in the absence of playoff hopes...I thinking...GO PSU!   :thumb:  The tough games are about to begin.  Contender or pretender?!

PSU is over rated.  They had only 39 yards rushing against Indiana and were forced to win it from the air.  The score was lopsided but IU lost 3 fumbles.

Nice win for San Diego Aztec's against NIU.

Oklahoma State is in trouble.  They played without one of their best offensive lineman and have several starting defenders out.

Looks like it is going to be Bama and Clemson or possibly Oklahoma.  Although OU is going to have a tough time with OSU, TCU, WV and Texas Tech.  They could loose one or 2 of those games.

True, but they were also held to just 14 points.

Indiana always plays tough

I agree with you there. Really haven't been tested yet. Then again beating Iowa in Iowa is now walk in the park. Just ask Michigan. Offense not quite as explosive as last year. Pass rush is anemic

Defenses are really keying on Barkely by stacking the box. Offense line is below average. Passing game needs to be sharper to keep the defense honest.
Barkley will still win the Heisman :thumb:

Neither am I and I'm a PSU fan. Defense can hang with the best. Offensive line is mediocre but they're still able to put up big numbers thanks to Barkley who can break one open at anytime.

I have to agree that Penn State is very good.  Although, if you don't look at the score and look at the stats, they got their ass whipped. However, the final score is all that matters.  (I would not call Michigan a good team) I think that with the exception of Alabama, the remainder of the top 10-12 teams is up for grabs.

Indeed they did. I was expecting more from our defense. They couldnt touch JT last night. He had all the time in the world to throw.

Offense line? Pathetic. Havent improved much since Franklin got there. To be fair, that unit was the most affected due to NCAA sanctions. In fact, Franklin had to take 2 defensive lineman and make them offensive lineman when he came to PSU. Imagine if Barkley had line he could run through?
The read pass option they always run? Makes me sick. How many times does that get blown up in the backfield for loss of yardage. Last year Barkley would eventually break one out for a big gain. This year teams are focused on him like a laser. Even with all this, they can put points on the board. They are a big play team.

Coaching? Late in the 4th they were within the 10 yard line and a touchdown would have sealed the game. What do they do? Play it safe. Gave it to Barkley 3 times for little or no gain and went for the field goal.

I was expecting a loss against OSU yesterday. What hurts the most is that yesterday they gave me hope.......and choked :bawl:

Home field advantage is HUGE in college football IMHO. More so than in the NFL

Go Blue!

I agree Emil, that offensive line was...offensive.  They didn't look like they could block the St Mary's Junior Varsity girls field hockey team.  They could neither block pass rushers nor open holes in the running game.  And I agree with the coaching, you have to take a shot at the end zone there, it would have won the game if you score a touchdown, and invite defeat if you kick a field goal.  That being said, it was the players that couldn't bring a rush on the blitz or cover receivers anywhere on the field.  Penn State came up small when they had the game handed to them.

Notre Dame was humbled by Miami earlier.

Ohio State not that impressive much less Michgan.

Emil may have been right, Ohio State/Michigan might have been a better game than Alabama/Auburn.  Alabama finally ran out of offensive lineman that could block and Auburn's fearsome front four (how's that for a cliche) put Jalen on the run all afternoon.  I thought Michigan played a great game that was almost enough.

Wisconsin should be rated No 1.  Certainly if the beat OSU they should be the undisputed No 1.   They shut out their last 2 opponents and are undefeated.

I don't know why they don't take the top 6 teams, give the top 2 rated teams a bye and have the next 4 teams in a playoff.

Another great day in College football.

My picks for the playoffs are-

Clemson
Oklahoma
Georgia
Alabama

I still don't see OSU making the cut.  Nice win over WI but they still have 2 losses although I think that they could beat Georgia and Alabama which rely on the run.  OSU would get carved up by a good team with a great QB.
Title: Re: COLLEGE FOOTBALL RETURNS!

I'd put OSU in ahead of Alabama.

OSU beat 2 top 10 teams and won the Big Ten conference championship.  One of it's losses was against a shoe in for the BCS playoff (Oklahoma).

Alabama was top ranked mostly due to a flawed ranking system that starts too early in the season and can't knock teams down for weak schedules.  Their top win was against a 3 loss LSU who lost to Troy State and they didn't even play in a conference title game.
Title: Re: COLLEGE FOOTBALL RETURNS!
Post by: Letitroll98 on 3 Dec 2017, 01:52 pm
I agree JLM, Alabama didn't even win their conference and it would mean two teams from the SEC.  I think when between two teams for the final spot you have to go with the conference winner and I would guess that the committee will also see it that way and pick OSU for the playoffs.

I pick OU to come out No.1.  Too much offense, can score on anyone. Their defense is playing a lot better. Mayfield has that X factor.  However, the long layoff till the playoff games hurts a lot of teams and puts them out of sync.  OU is peaking right now.  Also, Alabama has had a lot of injuries.  They may be more healthy and they will be more dangerous.

Anyone watch the OU-Georgia game?  Awesome game.  OU lost due to poor play calling at the end of the first half and in the second half..  I don't understand squib kickoffs at the end of games or at halftime.  Just kick the ball out of the end zone for a touch back.  At the half with about 12 seconds left, OU squib kicked and Georgia recovered it in excellent field position and kicked a field goal.   I can't tell you how many times I have seen this happen or a team run it back for a score.

However, Georgia proved to be the better team in the second half and OU could not handle that huge Georgia offensive line and power running.

It's not only the conference but the competition and what the scouts see (and now with video they can see most everything), Marshall Faulk went there and was picked no.2. But also now, the NFL (though it's changing) generally doesn't pick runners very high in the draft.

I think that the bias towards the big conferences was to much for him to overcome.  Not sure what they could have seen that would detract.  Power, moves and speed.  NFL scouts do see more than a voter for the Doak and it won't surprise me if he's the first back taken in the draft.  But, yes backs are pretty much a commodity in the NFL.

SDSU was in the WAC back in Faulk's time.  They did have some very good competition out of conference during his years there.  They tied USC and beat Minnesota handily when he played.  Here's a little article on Faulk...check out the video and you'll see why he went #2.  ...A great back!

Funny though I don’t have a dawg in this fight, my niece went to Bama and her brother graduated from UGA last May. Very impressed with how Georgie is controlling the game.

The internet jokes are all about blowing big leads in Atlanta.  I didn't think that, Alabama knew they had to throw the ball in the second half so replaced the runner with the thrower at halftime.  Two scores is nothing to make up in the college game and Bama got some chunk plays.  I would have liked to see Georgia win simply because Alabama wasn't a legitimate contender, they didn't even win their conference, but I'm not hating, they were the best team last night.

I went to UGA and still VERY proud of my DAWGS. Bama was most certainly a legitimate contender. They dismantled the #1 team and showed alot of heart to come back and beat GA. Saban looks like a genius throwing a freshman QB, with no previous starts in the biggest game of the year. ( replaced a 25-2 starter) The rest was history.  On the bright side for GA we got a great recruiting class, and will be playing at a high level for years to come.

I think he has had his fair shake, Emil.  He left Utah and Florida under pretty awful and shady circumstances (http://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-football/news/2178871-urban-meyer-florida-ohio-state-ncaa-violation-recruiting-drugs-program-will-musc )...31 Gators arrested.

Yeah, and Oregon is doing the exact same thing (3rd ranked class in the country - 247 Sports!!)...kids from 10 or so different states.  That QB, Johnson, also played in Florida before he (and his coach dad) came to Oregon.  I wonder if he and your new WR are buds.

The Ducks just yesterday landed a 4* LB out of Florida.  The kid looks awesome.  Ge'mon Eaford.  (Ge'mon?   )  Outer-regional recruiting has always been the dominion of the big boys...USC, Alabama, tOSU (hahahahaaaa), Notre Dame, Penn State etc.  Now this new Oregon coach (Mario Cristobal) has Oregon on the same trajectory in a big way.

As an aside, but related....I had a friend (56+ years ago) in high school in San Diego...that went to Penn St. (and became the Chair of PSU's Business Dep't.)...who tried to get his younger brother (a LB) to play there...who instead opted to play for USC.  People going everywhere even back then.....   I went to UC Bezerkely and my roommate came from Hawaii to play basketball........

I hope my Ducks are back on the right road. New coach who seems to be a good fit and has the right background. Former Alabama assistant. Strength training has been beefed up. QB Justin Herbert looks bulked up and could be a Heisman candidate this year. I give the new coaches and system 3 years to get us back to the top.

College football is more exciting, a team can be down 28-0 at the half and still win 36-28.  In the pros for most games the same score at the half means the game is over.  I still love watching my pro teams play because I'm emotionally invested, but often turn off other games out of boredom.  I don't really have any teams I'm totally tied to in college ball, I have favorites but that can change every year, but I'll watch almost any college game.  I guess that comes from being a Robert Morris alum, no team to root for.

So who are you guys following this weekend?

My Nittany Lions vs App State of course. PSU favored of course but a lot of questions  looking for answers.
Saquan Barkley and a host of others have left for the NFL. Senior QB and heisman candidate Trace McSorely remains.  Offensive coordinator Joe Moorehead has left for the head coaching job at Mississippi State and replaced with assistant off coordinator and QB coach Ricky Rahne.

Michigan and Notre Dame Saturday night.
This is Harbaughs make or break year IMHO. A lot of talk about this years team with his new tansfer QB.
A win against OSU and/or MSU is a must otherwise I see him on the next plane out to the NFL.

Let the games begin!

There are few college teams I root for, mostly I enjoy the game and seeing the performance of good athletes.  Somehow it seems that college players are faster than the pros, probably relative to each other.  Hard to get serious about a bunch of college kids playing ball.

You have to have a vested interest in a college team or conference.  I went to Oklahoma State and love watching win but not quite make it to the championship every year.  I also root for the Univ.of Minn every year and watch them go 5-6 or 6-5 every other year, LOL.

A couple of years ago there was a minor discussion on sports talk shows about if the powerhouse Alabama team that year might compete with the worst NFL team.  Mike Golic emphatically settled the issue telling us the pro line play would easily crush any college team, even Alabama.  I think you're correct with the relative speed being key, there are of course some players with NFL speed and they're matched against slower players, in the NFL everybody is fast, even the linemen, so you don't notice their actual momentum.  If you ever get a chance to see a training camp in person where you can get much closer to the action, you can see just how friggin scary fast these guys are.

More on topic I saw a couple of okay games yesterday, nothing dramatic, some great plays with the Notre Dame touchdown being the best.  Even in slow motion it was hard to see how he caught it.

I get that you're trying to add life and humor/fun to this but the problem is that it's hard to read intent, inflection and tone of voice.

This is what happened at work a while ago.

First a little background. My mother was Japanese and when I was younger, I looked moreso than now. The kids at grade school teased me - the usual stuff, occasionally calling me chink and "ah-so". If I complained or got bothered, well, they were only "kidding."

Recently, my boss was making fun of the over-enthusiastic style and accent of a Chinese guy he was talking with in a business transaction. My boss is a good guy and certainly isn't a bad guy. I know he was just having a little fun. But nonetheless, him talking like that just triggered an emotional reaction inside, and frankly, I just don't want to hear it. I know that I shouldn't be bothered but it just bristles.

I'm sure you're a nice enough guy but this is a public forum and you just don't know who your audience is.

I got my masters degree at University of South Carolina and wore Clemson apparel to every class, meeting, etc.

College football is brutal in the SE.  So far as my wife and I had to plan our wedding around GA, Clemson, and USC football games.

BTW - I wore that Clemson shirt in Birmingham and will be wearing it when I visit that office again this month.

They're all of a bunch of Auburn engineers anyways and that's a want-a-be Clemson in my eyes.

College football is brutal in the SE.

Because for years they had no pro football.  Falcons, Jaguars, Panthers are all expansion teams, Titans were transplanted Houston Oilers and Miami is a foreign country to most of the south.  So college football was king and you're very correct, passions run high.  Half of my family is from southern Alabama so you'd think they would all be Roll Tide, but my cousin spent his life as a student then professor at Auburn until his passing, while his brothers attended Alabama.  That subject was avoided at family gatherings.

Similar story here in Michigan with the lackluster Lions (60+ years since a championship).  Those in the Upper Peninsula (and farther south) are Packer Backers.  The rest of us are torn between University of Michigan and Michigan State University during footballs and basketball seasons.  Even our house is divided with two kids going to State and one still at U of M.

Edit:
While I did make off-color remarks about a school, I never attacked anyone personally.  However; I received personal attacks from three forum members.  I didn't realize that is tolerated.  Oh well...  8)

Hoped for a big season from him last year for us but he had a hard time catching the ball. A problem for a wide receiver. Hope he got that sorted out with the Ducks

BSU looked lackluster and a little sloppy in the first half against FSU, although freshman QB Hank Bachmeier showed promise. 31-13 at half.  Second half it turned 180° and BSU wins 36-31. I think Hank's answered any question about ability... looked really good. BSU should show well this year, methinks.

Hey Emil and the rest of the CFP crew.  I think I must have been sleeping when the thread passed through the list.

I was sorry to see PSU get mugged today...very NOT sorry to see Bama go splat.  That was kind of a dicey game, for sure.

All seems to be falling in place for my Ducks.  If they finish strong, I predict a CFP birth for them..12-1 and with that stupid last second loss to Auburn in the first game of the season.  (The Ducks had their top 4 receivers out injured...so an excuse, for certain.  And another, an all-American tight end (leading the nation in receiving td's') was hurt and out for the season three games ago.  Tough season, but rewarding for us shriveled up old fans of the Beaver () state.

Oh, and Emil...Juwan missed the first 4 or 5 games with a leg injury.  He's back now and playing at a very high level.  Only one drop that I can recall.  He killed USC last week.  Good kid, I think.

Here's hoping everyone's team wins next week.   :bounce:

Don't think Penn State got mugged. They lost! Played poorly. Questionable play calling in the Red Zone.
Mind you, I have 5 years of armchair college football coaching under my belt so I know what Im talking about

Shame cuz there was talk about meeting your Ducks in the Rose Bowl .

Congrats to the Gophers! Happy for them .

Yeah, they looked like the more athletic team from the start.  Alabama is no slouch and gave them all they wanted, but LSU seemed totally in control.

and the win win was at Alabama.
Home field advantage is huge in college ball. Not so much in the NFL IMHO

Hey Emil,

Here is a article with video of Juwan Johnson's really nice 53 yard snag off a flea-flicker.  (PSU even gets mentioned.)  It's from Saturday's slobber-knocker put on Arizona.
https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/2019/11/53-yard-reverse-flea-flicker-to-juwan-johnson-among-4-passes-of-30-plus-yards-for-oregon-ducks-against-arizona.html
Click on the photo halfway down the article.

JJ is doing really well out here.  If UO had him against Auburn, the Ducks would be undefeated.

So...who has the CFP champion?  LSU looked mighty tough against a good Georgia team...very balanced.  tOSU I can't figure out.  OU and Clemson...nyet.  Clemson's best win to date was the Poor Sisters of Mercy U.

Also, does anyone have any scoop on Wisconsin?  I know zero about them other than that they have a Heisman candidate of an rb.

GO DUCKS!

If you haven't watched LSU Quarterback Joe Burrow's Heisman Trophy acceptance speech, here's a link. If you're extremely impatient, start at 4:38.

I’ve been impressed by Burrow.   Seems like a stand-up guy.
