Wynton Marsalis
The Majesty of the Blues

Just got this in the mail on the recommendation from my former drum teacher and New Orleans jazz afficianado.  I'm only half way into the first track, and not loving it so far, although the playing is sublime.  The All Music review linked below really hates the second side, so I'll see what I think and post an update.

Ok so it's definitely growing on me.  Unlike Mr. Turlow, I kinda like the preaching about the death of the blues to music.  And the playing is fantastic.

Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, and Harry Edison
Laughin' to keep from Cryin'

Another used record store impulse buy, and I'm glad I did.  It's a Japanese import pressing--very clean, but it's mostly the playing that is so sweet.  From Scott Yanow's All Music Review, "One of tenor-saxophonist Lester Young's final studio sessions (he died a year later), this date apparently had a lot of difficulties but the recorded results are excellent. Prez was joined by two great swing trumpeters (Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison) and a fine rhythm section for two standards, two originals and the ballad "Gypsy in My Soul." Young takes rare clarinet solos on two of the selections with his emotional statement on "They Can't Take That Away from Me" being one of the highpoints of his career."

Gene Ammons
Red Top
1976 German release of recordings from October 4, 1947 in Detroit and
November 18, 1952, April 15, 1953, or June 1953 in Chicago.

Nice swingin' bop--mono of course, and recording quality typical of the early 50s.
