Best Way to Clean Speaker Cones
« on: 1 Sep 2015, 11:05 am »
I own a pair of ProAc Response D30R floor standing speakers and the bass cones have accumulated some dust on them.

What's the best way to clean speaker cones?

I think Samurai is referring to speaker bass driver cones?  Sounds like you might be referring to metal base footer cones?

For aluminum, magnesium, poly or coated cones I gently wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.  For uncoated paper or fiber cones I dust with a soft paint brush.

Yes, soft paint brush is a good tool for driver cones. :thumb:

Swiffer Duster.

Almost seems tailor-made for the task.

Compressed air from a distance. No static build up. Spray air in a circular motion about 12 inches away or more. A fine makeup brush may be used with caution on metal drivers however my recco is air.

That would be a Swoofer Duster.  Better apply for the patent before somebody beats you to the punch!  :D

I also have a pair of ProAc speakers (model Response three point eight) and they use carbon fiber cones that really collect dust if I leave the grills off.

You can see in the pic attached how rough the cones are. I don't know if your model uses the carbon fiber or not.

I have used a very soft paint brush while blowing over the area while I brush. Seems to work.

Just my theory, but I think Swiffer Dusters use a very light adhesive, which gets on whatever you dust, which subsequently collects dust more quickly...  And then you have to buy more dusters.
Our local grocery store carries a generic brand which doesn't leave behind a residue, which I prefer.

Are you concerned about the sound generation due to the interaction between two inviscid coaxial vortex rings moving along a common axis in the same direction.  I suppose the dust could result in radial accelerations.  After all the rate of change of the axial accelerations of the vorticity centroids of the vortex rings are important in the generation of sound during this interaction.

OR do you just want to clean your cones?   :P

Good Listening,
