If you can put up with a bit of tape hiss - this is an amazing album of older mainstream trio jazz. (Don't be scared off by its older recording date - quality-wise.

Poll Winners 3 - Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, Shelley Manne

Following Jim's Tommy Emmanuel selection...

Could anyone recommend one of Martin Taylor's collections (i.e. Demo Quality)?

NOTE:  It looks like "Artistry" is available in SACD.  Maybe I'll give that a try.

Another nice recording....instrumental....a bit new age....but well recorded on the Tropo label...2006.

Quote
The music that acoustic guitarist Alex De Grassi, electric bassist Michael Manring and tabla player Christopher Garcia perform is often beyond categorization or even simple description. Like Oregon, they are open to a wide variety of idioms, making every sound count and utilizing space quite effectively. The blend between their instruments makes it sound as if they are of one mind, yet their melodic world/folk music is open to spontaneity. In addition to eight group originals (four by Garcia), they perform "The Water Is Wide" and a surprising version of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black." De Man Ia  (given its name by taking two or three letters from each of the musicians' last names) is a set of intriguing music that grows in interest with each listen. There is much to discover.

Alex De Grassi - "De Man Ia"

Hey folks... sorry I haven't been contributing much lately... busy fighting my way through this horrible economy of ours. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about! Anyway, I'm listening to Gary Burton & Friends - Departure. Nice line-up (Burton-vibraphone, John Scofield-guitar, Peter Erskine-drums, Fred Hersch-piano, John Patitucci-bass), nice arrangements of some good tunes, great sound, such a good listen! If you like jazz, its well worth the dime.

Holst's "The Planets" is one of my favorite recordings and I own half a dozen different versions with various conductors, but this hi-rez version is far superior to all of the others I own (including other hi-rez versions).  You don't need to be a classical music fan to appreciate the artistry and beauty of this recording.

Jim, I am 100% confident that this piece would wow your visitors at RMAF.  Best of all, you can download it from High Definition Tape Transfers for only $14.00!!

Hi Guys and Gals!

Been away photographing a wedding in the mountains of North Carolina plus fighting a loss of hearing in my right ear, going to a ENT specialist tomorrow to hopefully get fixed!
Listening to music is one of my greatest pleasures but it has been sidetracked due to this ear infection thing!

Chris thanks for the Vocabularies recommendation! I will have to get a copy of this one for sure.

TJC712, I really understand the fighting your way thru this wonderful economy for sure, I lost my job in April and am now making a whole lot less than I was but I am very thankful to be working...its better than the alternative. Hang in there and thanks for the Gary Burton recommendation.

Zybar! Holst The Planets!! Yes! Its good!

All the best

Alex!!

The Martin Taylor "Tapestry" SACD Hybrid turned out to be EXCELLENT.  It is a Linn recording with unreal soundstage.

We happened to drive to Santa Barbara yesterday, and as we were roaming the streets there was this band playing some lively music outside Borders. We stopped and started listening - it was Zimbabwean music being played on marimbas and other instruments along with vocals that of course I did not understand. Suffice to say before long the street was packed with people listening to the music and dancing right there on the streets. Ended up buying the CD right away. It's called Mas and the band was called Masanga.

This a good recording with sounds spread out all across the soundstage with lots of spatial cues. It's pretty cool. Songs I particularly enjoy are "Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel," "Kids," and "4th Dimensional Transition."

This song is a lot of fun to listen to, especially at loud volumes  :thumb:  (sounds horrible on youtube though)
