Am I the only one listening to Reggae?
« on: 1 Jul 2017, 12:54 am »
I've been stuck on some new reggae.
 Stick figure
 Rebelution
 Pepper
 Iration

Okay, I,m not love with most of the lyrics. But I can listen for long periods. Some albums im finding to have very large and wide sound stage. Organs just fill my whole room , bongos from all directions , & background vocals just apear from behind, to the left, to the right ,just about everywhere ,but directly from the speakers themselves.
I've only been listening to this type of music for a few months, so it's new to me.
Any suggestions on some new Reggae style music ?

I really like Jah9 and Raging Fyah out of Jamaica.

Also the new Damian Marley singles are killer!

A few more...

Slightly stoopid
Tribal seeds
Michael Franti & Spearhead
Matisyahu
The Expendables

I know I left lots out...

And I know these aren't old school 'reggae'...but to me they're an enjoyable listen.

I like Matisyahu but his brand new CD leaves me cold. So far, I think Spark Seeker is his high water mark.

I should mention that the #1 pick from that fan poll (linked in post #3) has just received a 3CD reissue for it's 40th anniversary. You get the famous LP on CD1, various singles 12' mixes and dubs on CD2. The real treat is on CD3 - it's the original JA mix that always goes for several hundred bucks when it appears on auction sites. There is an 3LP version, but the JA mix is exclusive to the CD. A must have!

I love this topic! I've loved conscious for 30 years, but only recently have gotten into the younger artists new school artists thanks to my Tidal subscription and satellite radio.

Here is some more to check out:

Morgan Heritage (not a new artist, but newer generation)
Keznamdi
Protoje
Chronixx
Common Kings
Stephen Marley, Skip Marley, Damian Marley, Ky-Mani Marley).
Fortunate Youth
Lion Fiyah
Iration
The Movement
New Kingston

I agree that Spark Seeker is, IMO, his best to date.  In fact I love playing that album for friends and watching their facial expressions when the first song, Crossroads, comes on. They try to understand what I'm playing for them then about 1:15 in they're hit by a wall of deep notes and the rest of a great song (and album for that matter). With this album if you can't 'feel' the music the volume is too low!

Back to the original poster, another enjoyable band is Rusted Root.

You are quite right and thanks for sharing, a great resource for the reggae fan, though I would have includied more Mighty Diamonds, Gregory Issac and Heptones. And the Wailing Souls Wild Suspense would be in my top 20. Great stuff.

I like the Frightnrs, "Nothing More to say"; Jimmy Cliff, "The harder they come".

Will review all these recommendations, though, as I need more too.

I like the Marley hit due the bass and the Hammond, I have a Best of CD which are suffice.
Others Raggae composers are not au par w/Marley, they are Pop 40.
