VMPS Super Tower speakers  -  (Westford, Massachusetts)  $200 OB, $300 BIN

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231559288042?rmvSB=true

"Cabinets are a very attractive walnut veneer. They are in nice shape except on the top there a couple spots that are discolored or marked but at 49" high they are not easily seen. The 12" woofers and passive radiators (not seen, underneath) need re-foaming. Midranges may as well. The 15" drivers were replaced from VMPS some number of years back and have butyl surrounds that are in nice shape.  Replacment 15" drivers were $100 each alone. I have not plugged them in to test in some time. Feel free to come and inspect."

These speakers have the FST ribbon tweeters, Neo Panel midrange, 12" Carbon Fiber cone woofer and a 12" down firing passive radiator. Two sets of binding posts allow for Bi-wiring or Bi-amping and include L pads to adjust treble and midrange output. Since the passing of Brian Cheney, VMPS has gone out of business and these speakers are no longer available but the last list price for a set like this was over $3,000.

Specifications
Bass- 30cm (12") woven carbon fiber, 30cm (12") Passive Radiator
Mid:- two rectangular 10 x 20 cm (4 x 8") Neo ribbons, 280 Hz - 6.9 kHz
Treble:- FST, 6.9kHz - 30kHz

Output levels and distortion:- max. 1% THD fullrange/1 W, max. 112+ dB SPL / 1 m

I have 5 sets of VMPS speakers plus a LRC and a Larger Sub. The only reason for this sale is to downsize my living room system from a 5.1 to a 2.1 system.

Speakers are too big and too heavy to ship so local pickup only. I can deliver these speakers in the Milwaukee/Chicago area with upfront payment and if you cover the gas costs. $1,000"

REPOST  -  STILL AVAILABLE

12 inch VMPS Bass Subwoofer Speaker - $295 (Clear Lake, MN)

http://stcloud.craigslist.org/ele/5023794501.html

12 inch VMPS Bass Subwoofer Speaker - $295 (Clear Lake, MN)

http://stcloud.craigslist.org/ele/4187398811.html

"This is a 12" diameter in-home non-powered subwoofer with a 12" active radiator in front and a 12" passive radiator in bottom. VMPS calls it their "Smaller Subwoofer." It measures 16" wide, 16" deep and 27" tall with a nice walnut top.

VMPS has been known for making outstanding sub woofers and speakers for nearly 3 decades. The subwoofer is rated at 8 ohms and the frequency range is 28-150Hz.

This unit will take just about all the power you can throw at it (up to 250 watts rms) and the bass really "rocks the house." "

 6 Foot VMPS SuperTower IIa/R Speakers  - (New Mexico - Albuquerque)  $1000

http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/ele/5025690410.html

"I've got some very powerful, 6 foot tall home audio speakers. They are originally priced at $12,000. The reason the price is reduced so much is some of the speakers are blown and need replacing. I don't have the time or the money to replace them so I'm hoping to leave them in the hands of someone who would like them and would be willing to experience the awesomeness these speakers are capable of. Each box has 4 subwoofers (3-10" subs & 1-15" sub). No Paypal please, cash only."

Stimpy performs very neat service re-posting these dinosaurs.

IMO the price on the IIIs is insanely high, both the alleged (ridiculous) msrp and asking price which is 2x new MSRP assembled.  Some of the msrp #s people post appear to be induced by dropping LSD.  Almost positive that version of the ST II employs Brian's original mid range design, IIRC "5109" magnet stencil, built by Gefco.  It's a mid bass though Brian crossed it high as a mid range.  I want 2 to 8 of those mid bass, among the best extant.  Compared to the Asian-sourced Versa-Tronics WCF that replaced the 5109, the 5109 rolls off sooner and is less smooth, sweet, and musical on top, but much more dynamic overall, and the lower in range the better is the 5109.  When you get to the 5109s bass cutoff in the low-mid 40s the 5109 annihilates the WCF, rivaling the best cost no object modern 5.25" mid bass (the lowest/best bass I heard in a 5.25" is probably the one in Joseph Audio's compact).

Forward link to those 5109 for sale if you ever come across them.

Ummm, I'm thinking the most costly IIa/R was closer to $2k vs. the stated $12k.  Still not a bad value @ $1k if cosmetic condition good.  It's funny I forgot Brian installed Focal T120K on that model.  I still don't understand why he used two different mid ranges on every IIa/R, 3x Peerless poly/foam below and 1x Audax paper/rubber above (5.25" version of the 6.5" Jon Bau used in his then-ground breaking Spica TC-50).

Someone/an AC member for whom I recently installed new terminals on several of his neo planar mids said he is convinced every single neo planar mid disintegrates and is destined for early demise.  If you look closely, you'll see deformed areas where are magnets, which he is convinced is the neo magnet and/or the shell for the magnet disintegrating.

He also said he heard audible distortion both before and after the terminal repair, but I have to admit I carefully listened to each planar mid plugged directly to my amp and heard no such distortion.

So for me personally, it's a mystery and I don't know what to think.  But I'd be concerned.  He bought several of the Monsoon neo planars (some have identical cosmetics to VMPS, some slightly different) and is convinced they all suffer the same fate of an early demise with no way to fix them.  He actually cut the rivets on at least one and took it apart.

IIRC I did see the magnet deformation he described on all or most of the mids he sent for repair (about 13).  Curious what others think about it.

Warning to buyers: the later the model the worst was QC.  The last 5-7 years I estimate over 50% of factory assembled had moderate to serious QC issue, wiring and/or mechanical.  I spent tens of hours helping a buyer for free last year straighten out his IIa/R wiring (kits, not Brian's fault), just as a mental exercise and because it was fun to be involved helping resurrect a dinosaur (which was a total success BTW), but won't do that for free next time.

I think if you get four of Brian's subs for dirt cheap, original size or larger, and set them up in a distributed array, you'd have one heck of a bass system, almost unbeatable, for very little money.  Follow the setup instructions at my web site, which I admit need editing.

If the subs worked properly, it would outperform the bass from any system Brian built or sold, via it's natural bass mode cancelling effect in 3-D space, throughout the room and without EQ of any kind.

Being a former VMPS dealer in the Twin Cities those prices listed as retail for the Super Tower III SE and the Super Tower IIa/R are  very much inflated. I have sold various pairs and delivered both of these models. Even when Brian came out with the SE version of the IIa/R it wasn't even close to that price range an ad in a trade pub shows the Super Tower III as $3895 for a pr in kit form and $$4795 pr assembled
Brian prided himself more bang for the buck
