How many headphones is too many????
« on: 4 Apr 2015, 08:51 pm »
Already have the Hifiman HE 400's. Found a used pair of Grado PS 1000's that are in NJ being re-cabled and should be done soon. So what did I do today? Went to Massdrop and ordered the AKG K553... resisted until the last day of the drop. I need help!!

I have two pairs of floorstanding speakers and three pairs of bookshelf speakers. The cost of these is around $4k. I think I am at a conservative dollar figure, compared to a great many audio fans here at AC and the speakers they own. So how many headphones can one find (cans that are desired) for $4K?

I think quite a few....

Well it depends....a pair of LCD3's for $2000, add a set of Beyer T1's for $1400 and a el cheapo amp for $600 and your at $4K easily..
And you only have 2 headphones!!
LOL

With a $4000 blank check to spend on headphones?
First decision would be whether to spend all of it on a pair of stax Sr-009's (and add some more for amplification).

But as stunningly good as the Stax are, one of the pleasures of headphone ownership/nerdship is having different"flavors" to pick from according to taste, mood, and/or program material, so I think I'd likely divvy it up thusly:
  • Shure SE846 IEM
$999; Subtotal $999 +/-
  • HD800 or T1,
$1400-1500, subtotal $2400-2500 +/-
  • Audeze LCD3, $1699 IIRC, total +/- $4200.

At least that's today's list...

The circle is called Headphone Mania, right?  The answer is there's never too many.  The past twelve months Hifiman HE400i, Grado RS2, JVC HARX900, Thinksound Rain iem's.  Who knows what the next twelve months will bring.  Buy whatever your heart desires and your disposable will support.

It's certainly easier to pursue a "soup du jour" approach with headphones than with speakers. Right on, Letitroll.

A great big +1

Did you get the "e" version of the RS-2? I picked up a pair of those about a month ago and love them.

No, I got the "i" version on closeout.  The price was too good to pass up.

Wow I'm truly a lightweight!! I've never owned more than 1 decent headphone at a time. This is uncharted territory for me,  I really needed a closed back can for late night listening, and the Massdrop deal was too good.

Hey Now,

I was up to 14 including iems, but am down to 7 now (4 headphones, 3 iems). 14 seemed to be a bit much. I've settled on what I like and will likely cull a bit more.

Awesome Milford3.  My preference is still the Beyer T1 with the LCD2 a very close second.  An finishing at 3rd is the HIFMAN HE400.  So for me, three is optimum.  And then, switch over the HB Type 1's.  Life is good.

My first couple of years in the head fi hobby, I spent way too much pursuing nirvana.
Now that I have a better idea of what I really like, I have 5 headphones and two amps.
May get one more amp and a set of good Grado's.
Hibuck...

I'm back down to one pair (HE-560). I kinda like it that way. However recently I could have really used some nice closed portables, thinking I will try to have a listen to a pair of PM-3s.

Hi all,
I have one Sennheiser HD-570 (60Ohms) that I bought 13 years ago for 100 $
and that I use only with my iPod.
I also have another Sennheiser HD-650 (300 Ohms) that I use with my Bottlehead Crack
headphone amplifier.
Both headphone can work well with my laptop and my Grace Mondo Internet radio.

I f I had a truck load of money (Which will never be the case,
unless of course I win the jack pot,
then I would not hesitate and by the top of the line Stax
with the best dedicated amplifier.

I only have 2 pair in the rotation at the moment.

I use a set of Westone UM1 for planes or travel listening, typically directly out of my iPhone 5s.

I use a set of Sennheiser Momentum on ear (closed phones) with my Decware Zenhead amp, and a 3rd generation iTouch at home.  I stream FLAC via iPeng to the iTouch.  Works well for around the property.

I still have a set of Shure iems, and a set of noise cancelling Panasonics around, but never use them.

I am lucky enough to have a basement space where my main speaker rigs live, so headphone use is usually limited, but always enjoyable!

Always intereesting to hear what other folks are using these days, there is so much out there.

If I ever win the jackpot, I'll buy you a top of the line pair of Stax and the best dedicated amp, as well, Guy...so now your chances just doubled  :thumb:

Come on guys, who else is with me? Commit to buying Guy a Stax rig IF you hit the jackpot for millions...let's hook him up!!

Hi ajzepp,
if you and/or others win the jackpot 100,000,000 + USD,
will you only buy me a Stax set-up ?
Come on, don't be that cheap you can do better.
Maybe 10,000,000 USD would solve all my problems.
If you want to help me, maybe forget about the Stax
and give me 5% of your winning. :thumb:

Thanks for the nice thoughts,
even if I think that the chances to win big are slim.
