Options to upgrade from my Behringer DCX2496
« on: 27 Jul 2014, 02:14 pm »
This speaker build is nearing completion and now I'm looking for a replacement for my DCX. It was great to develop the crossovers and it sounds OK, but I would like upgrade with out spending a fortune.

I'm considering doing some DCX mod's or potentially adding a DA after the DCX or just replacing the DCX with another pro speaker management system.

What are the recommended DCX replacements?

After years of exploration, I've come to realize that specs don't tell the whole truth and I am looking for insights into which units actually sound good.

Here are a few that some have suggested might sound pretty good.

DCX replacement:

Xilica XP-4080
Digidesign 192 IO
DBX DriveRack 260
XTA Electronics DP226
BSS FDS-366T
Tascam DA-3000
EV DC One DC 1 DC1

DA to bypass noisy output of DCX

How about one of the MiniDSP products? The new Linkwitz LX521 speaker utilizes the NanoDIGI as an alternative to the ASP board that he has used in the past. So I would say that's a pretty good endorsement. You need to add DACs for each channel (which is good because you can decide how much quality you want to spend. )

That would put me squarely where I am now.  The DCX is OK as far as processing goes, but the output section needs to be bypassed as it is pretty dirty.

Getting a miniDSP would put me in a position to purchase a DAC as I am now, with questionale benefit.

I came across an interesting option called the Najda talked about right here.  A kit designed by an enthusiast, and includes 8 channels of DAC and Analog Volume control.  Taking a serious look at that right now.

The miniDSP 2x8 HD has a 24-96 DAC built in.  I had a modded DCX and now have a miniDSP.  The miniDSP stock sounds better than my modded DCX did.

If you want to go up-market, there's always the DEQX HDP-4.

I have two possibilities I'm not using.

dbx Drive Rack PA with calibrated mic - quite decent but not a good choice for speakers above 100 db efficiency.

XTA DP224 - This one is really great but it is only a two-way.

If interested, PM me with questions/

Call Doug over at asi-tek.com. He has a ton of experience modding the 2496. He modded a deqx for me and he took it waaaaay beyond what a stock unit was able to do....

All really good suggestions and will get me great sound I am sure.

At this point, I am interested in the Najda.  The only reason I am holding back is lack a noise documentation and comparison review with what is available.

8 channels of DA and analog volume control.  If it sounds good, which I think it will, would give me everything I want in a package that costs $400.

Anybody used the Najda?
