I recently bought a download of a guitar/vibe duo ( Tom Beckham and Brad Shepik) from Bandcamp. It was available in FLAC at no extra cost "for audiophiles and nerds" (That's what it says on the site LOL). Bandcamp allow lower-profile acts to get their stuff out there without incurring the usual distribution costs associated with selling physical media from B&M channels.
It's sold on a "name-your-price" model which is interesting. Asking price was $9. I tossed in a couple extra. I'm sure these guys don't do to their gigs in limos, unlike, say, Taylor Swift who has a concert playing on iTunes right now which looks like it cost a quarter of a million dollars to stage. So the no-talent, easily marketable acts like Swift and Bieber (read: the pubescent market) get all the promotional push. The less commercial acts that used to get the crumbs? There aren't any crumbs anymore thanks to a generation that 'downloads' all its music.
I read the article linked by archer. This artist had her song streamed several million times and literally made enough to buy a nice sit-down lunch. Pathetic.
