Tube phonopre with Transcendence
« on: 15 Jun 2022, 03:52 am »
Hello
Looking for advice.  I have a Hagerman Cornet phono pre which I love
I’m going to purchase an AVA pre with the 120 amp
Thoughts on whether the tube phono with the tube pre amp would be tube overkill.  Therefore go with a SS pre like the Vision?
I have Pretty new Revel F35 speakers
Main listening is vinyl using the above phono with my Technics sl1200 mk5
Thanks in advance for opinions

Tube phono stages work well with tube preamps.

The Hagerman phono preamp is pretty nice but not as refined as our Vision Q phono preamp.  The Vision Q is quieter.

The phono stage in my T7 is leaps and bounds better than the Schiit Mani I had. Is the Vision Q another step up Frank?

Move up to Hagerman’s Trumpet. His new version is $1100, uses 6 tubes. It supports lo output as well as hi output carts. I have his previous revision that has 2 more tubes and boutique passive parts. I run a Well Tempered Amadeus with Grado Ref 3. Black Cat Graceline Setsuna phono cable.

I’ve had all Of Jim’s phono preamps and each is a distinct improvement over its lesser siblings. They respond very well to vintage tubes if you go down that rabbit hole hole, which I have.

I haven’t used one of Frank’s phono circuits in a very long time, an early Fet valve in a Pat-5 chassis. I’m. Sure he has come a long way from what I read of his recent roducts

Thanks for the input GE. I’m familiar with Jim’s pre. I follow him on Facebook. I tend to read and read and read until I get can get a good idea whether I want to pony up $.  I’m also keeping an eye on Darlington labs.

Hey guys, this is the Audio by Van Alstine thread.

If you want to discuss other brands, please use another appropriate thread.

Thanks,

Frank

Frank , Is it possible to send an RB10 pre back to you to have the phono circuit put into it?  Or once it's made without it, you have to buy the standalone version?
thanks

It is not economical to retrofit the Vision Q phono preamp in an already built AVA preamplifier.

The main mother board must be removed to install it.  It also requires changes to the raw power supply, the RCA jacks, the grounding, and the switching network. Then there is two way shipping on the preamp too,

The free standing Vision Q phono preamp is the best choice and is actually quieter.

not surprised. a mani is a $150 phono. to be fair,  very good  entry level.
