A conversation with Francis about Ray Manzarek
« on: 3 Mar 2017, 07:13 pm »
We have been going back and forth about how Ray Manzarek used a Gibson G101 organ for much of his recording history with the Doors, so I did some digging and found this conversation. Other organs Ray used included a Vox Continental, the Rhodes, and a Rhodes bass organ for his left hand, stacked above the Gibson. A lot of keyboardists really were searching for the right sound back in the day, and very few of them had the money that Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson threw at their setups.

One of the odds and ends I am trying to remember is which song Manzarek used with a piano, where he affixed thumbtacks to the striker fingers to get that real tinkle sharp sound. Anyone know what I am talking about?

With a little more digging, both "love her Madly" and "LA Woman" used a tack piano.

Are you referring to Whiskey Bar?  That had a clunky sound like a hammered dulcimer.

I have nothing to contribute to this thread concerning RM's organ, but that sure was an interesting thread you linked.

Love The Doors.
