Super Tower /R SE 10" midbass
« on: 12 Feb 2017, 06:01 pm »
I picked up a set of these in trade and they look great. A little less bass than I would have thought but I haven't played with or even looked at the PR yet.

My question is if anyone knows what 10" midbass originally came with these?  The left speaker has woven carbon fiber with phase plug (magnet # X5453 1056 9606) and the right has a smooth coated finish with phase plug (magnet #X5070 1056 9219)

If both are acceptable and just came from different years of production which would be preferred? Are replacements or substitutes available cause I can't find them? And for a last wild shot in the dark.....does anybody know the specs so I could try to source a replacement if needed sometime down the line?

Generally the carbon fiber cones were upgrades over the non carbon ones....When I bought my Super Towers the carbon cones were an available upgrade that I got.

You didn't say if yours was an ST /R SE or just a regular a ST /R.

Since I posted this every ST /R SE pic that I've found shows a woven 10" midbass which makes me think that is the original.  While the other isn't a woven pattern that doesn't mean it isn't carbon fiber too (AFAIK).  However, that doesn't mean you aren't correct. This could be an early set that was upgraded and when the woven driver was damaged the other midbass was installed.  The only paperwork I found says that the ST /R SE comes with a carbon fiber midbass which would be the woven style based upon the pictures. I wish there was a way to tell the composition of the smooth cone midbass which would tell me if it was a substitute from VMPS since it has their numbering scheme on the magnet. The previous owner says that he got them that way so there isn't any help there.

The VMPS SuperTower /R  have 12" mid bass drivers, not 10".

Have you searched the "X" numbers in this circle?  Have you perused the sticky thread on Replacement Drivers?
