Super 3-1.5 High Output on the truck
« on: 27 Jan 2017, 12:58 pm »
I placed an order with Louis recently for a pair of the dual driver 3-1.5 bookshelf speakers, and they are due to arrive on monday! I've assembled what I think will be an ideal bedroom set-up: a JWN 6V6 amp putting out around 15 wpc; Conrad Johnson PV-15;  Lounge Audio Copla; Thorens TD-125MKII with a Denon 301 MKII cart; Neko Audio DAC hooked up to a mac mini. The amp also has a headphone jack, so I've been dialing it in and have it just about ready for the speakers. Will follow with photos next week!

BTW, Louis has been a pleasure to communicate with via email. He answered all my questions patiently and steered me in the right direction.

Congratulations. I look forward to your impressions.

BTW, what makes these "high output?"
What is the rated efficiency and frequency response?

They have two drivers instead of just one. Not sure about the specs.

They are not the Super 3i which is and always will be single driver per cabinet.  They are the new Super 3-1.5 High Output Monitor and they are bigger than a Super 3U.  Louis hopes to get some pictures up on the AC soon.  They are the monitor version of the speaker Steve has.

It's these: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=147959.0

Have these changed since Louis posted the "final version"  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=146160.0?

He described these as 16" x 8" x 12.5" = 1,600 cu in (gross).  My Super 3U's are 15" x 9" x 12.5" - 1,687.5 cu in (gross).

Thank you for clarifying that for the readers. Apologies for the confusion. I changed the header.

$1300 and some change.

That settles my decision, since it saves me 1k.. These with a Fleawatt and ITube 2 would make a heck of a 2k system and should satisfy the most picky audiophile very easily.

Spend a little more and get a UFO amp from Decware or the Wolf Ear Kitoki amp.

To my knowledge they haven't changed since that posting.

I would argue that these with a used Decware Zen would make a great $2k system.

Haha. The really good news is the speakers are already on the delivery truck today. So if you hold on a bit they may make a fairly quick appearance!

Those console amps can be real sleepers, especially those from Pilot and surprisingly Magnavox.  You used to be able to get the Magnavox amps for almost nothing but work got out.  IIRC when Dennis Had started his "retirement" business he started modding Magnavox SE EL84 amps and reselling them.  THat sort of evolved into his current SE amps.  You can still get them pretty cheap (less than $300 restored or unrestored) but some people are trying to sell them for over $1,000.

Jim Nicholls modified this amp for me some time ago, installing his own circuit, based on the work of Lance Cochrane. Lance in turn uses a modified circuit based on some of the circuits found in these older console amps. They use a grounded-cathode input gain stage followed by a floating paraphase phase splitter, according to Dick Olsher. All I know is it sounds really good with the headphones.
