Welcome to the GAS (Gateway Audio Society).
We are a group of Music and Audio enthusiasts located in and near St Louis Missouri, Gateway to the West. We have a wide variety participants with systems that range from high powered solid state rigs all the way down to fleapowered SET’s and everything in between.
Along with regular get-togethers, many of us hit the local concert venues quite often. St Louis and the surrounding communities have always hosted some great concerts, musicals and plays. Be sure to check in often and look for the local concert posts.
All of the “Official” gatherings will get posted as an Announcement so that everybody where, when and what’s going on (gear or music-wise).
Since this is a very public forum (and following the lead of our neighbors), I’m compiling a contact list for the participants (name, email, phone numbers and such). This list will be circulated offline (for obvious reasons). If you are interested in joining us for any of our events, just drop me a PM and I’ll add your name to the list.
Generally, the get-togethers will rotate venues. We all want to experience each other’s systems. On occasion we may even meet at our local dealers shops for some after hours listening sessions or new product demos.
Since I write reviews for Enjoy The Music, I’ve always got something new and different flowing through my music room. You guys are always welcome out at anytime, not just for an “official” gathering. Just give me a buzz, then a few minutes to clean up the crud that gathers, and come on out, it’s an open invite for all.
If you just found us, drop me a line or make a post here at GAS.
All are welcome.

Tim at Best Sound is interested in joining. I'll drop by and let him know we got this going. I still need to go see Erik and Duane at MPF.
The other places that we'll try and hit are John out at Musical Concepts, Mike Pranka with Toffco (he's the US importer for Rega, Dynavector and a few other things). I'll try to get ahold of Kieth Herron (of Herron Audio), Wilson Shen (Clayton Audio) and I think Sam Kennard (Vibrapod) has an appointment only shop off Hanley somewhere. I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody.
-
I forgot about those guys.. that's great. If you can, try and get the designer of clayton audio as well.
-
How about the disc doctor? and there is Thom Pallazzolla.

I had Clayton Audio listed as Wilson Audio. Ooops
I fixed the post.
Your right Steve, can't forget Thom P. and Duane (the Disc Doc). Thom will probably bring some of his custom designs to our gatherings, that or do something at Za's place. I'll get ahold of Duane and see if he wants to join in too.

What?? I was hoping to hear the new Watt-Puppies.

Scott,
Your avatar surprises me. I thought for sure it would be your trademark picture. Wish I was in your nexk of the woods, I would love to be part of the GAS Gang. Anything you guys need or want to audition/review, let me know. If I have it, and can do without for a bit, I will send it down for one of your sessions.

Hello all,
I just moved to St. Louis and while I was surprised to find so few dealers locally, I'm delighted to find out about this group.
Please put me on whatever informal email lists you keep.... and (commercial plug here--->) notice that I am selling a pair of Dunlavy SC-3's that are just too big for my little listening room.
Look forward to hearing from & meeting you,

Welcome aboard! It's always good to have new members. Yeah, it's a pretty bleak scene here for retail high end audio. I was just up in Chicago with a fellow GASser this weekend to pick up some used equipment and got a taste of some of their high end stores. What a difference!
I think you'll be surprised at the diversity of people and equipment in our group. If nothing else just sharing the insanity of our hobby and getting turned on to new people and new music is a charge in itself.
Looking forward to meeting you. :)
steve k
-
I also would like to welcome you. As Steve said we have a great mix of equipment among us. St. Louis is almost dead when it comes to dealers.
Only 2 good stores in the area. Tim who is a GAS member, is a the manger of one (Best Sound). The funny part is that we have more manufactures of highend goods than stores that sell them. I look forward to meeting you at the next session.

Run Now!
Oops, too late.
You've been exposed...
:D
Welcome aboard! All kidding aside, you never know where your interests might grow playing around with this group.
(just watch out if you don't use tube gear.....yet.)
Looking forward to meeting and hearing what *you* like to listen to as well.
Regards,
DeadFish

welcome to St Louis and of course the GAS. You timed it well just as our favourite team The Cardinals are on a high. You'll find most of us are a pretty inoffensive bunch, we share a passion for audio and in most cases also enjoy some of the finer alcoholic beverages out there. If you ever find yourself in the area of Best Sound pop in by and introduce yourself. Ask for Tim :)
-
Hello everyone! Tim at Best Sound turned me on to this site. I'm a budding St. Louis audiophile (always have been an audiophile but have recently been making enough money to aquire nice things).
Looks like I have a lot of reading to do here...
-
Welcome to you too, Eastside!
It's always good to have more playmates!
What a great time to join us with GAS!
Since we are about 3 'newguy's deep now, you have time to save before you 'host' and provide all the typical high-end refreshments that we have become accustomed to. (since starting this rule)
I'll let Scott fill you in on the details, so you can start arranging the 2nd mortgage soon.
All seriousness aside,
Welcome aboard!

Hiya Zako, Guys,
I decided to split the post off and posted it here
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=15508.msg134817#134817&sid=687f1224b7987c68c9f66e41a6ece5a1
Since we started to get way off topic from the original 'Welcome To GAS' thing, I thought it would be best under a new topic header "Big Systems and Even Bigger Horns". No deletes, edits or anything like that, just a quick split into a new topic.
-
Hey guys, I just found this site with help from the asylum. Awesome!! just what I was looking for. Can I be included in your ring? I'm not in St. Louis. I'm in Maywood which is about 20 miles north of Hannibal, not too much of a drive. I'm into home theater, diy and I'm just getting into tubes having built the AES K-502 and the diytube el84 st-35. I'm in the process of building a pair of Fostex fe166e back loaded horns now. I haven't had time to read all the posts here yet so whens your next meet?
Mark
-
Hey Mark!
Welcome in!
Saw your post over at the Asylum, and the more the merrier for this well-spread group.
How are you liking your DIYTube ST-35?
I've been listning to one I bought used about 6 months ago, and except for the hum that developed when my dog helped it drop 5 feet, I've been real happy with its 'sound' and pep running through my Altecs.
Did you build it out of all new parts or salvage some old Dynaco stuff?
If you are getting into tubes, this is a good group for it, as they even turned *my* head away from my beloved Bryston gear. (gasp!)
Do you get down St. Louis way very often?
I don't know of any proposed meets offhand, but that doens't mean that someone else doesn't have an idea up their sleeve.
I'm sure others will chime in, but wanted to welcome you and hope to see you soon at a get together.
Best regards,
DeadFish
-
Hi, thanks!
I love the st-35. It sounds soooooo good and it's dead quiet. I cant wait to get my fostex horns built, although it sounds pretty darn good on my JBL J325A's. Here's a link to the details and some pics.
http://www.diytube.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=544
It's all new components except for the iron, their from a 1968 Dynaco sca-35 and have the cloth leads. The gold point stepped attenuators are used also, an ebay score. I just installed a quad of el84 ei elites and it's really singing. St. Louis is a nice drive about 100 miles, I usually get down there 3 or 4 times a year . I saw Rush at riverport last summer, my bud and his bro got to meet Ged and Alex at the meet n greet. I bet I'll be making the trip down a lot more often now. I'm lookin foward to meeting everone in the near future.
Mark
-
Hey Mark, that's a sweet looking amp.
Hope I get a chance to listen to it sometime.
You like those ei elites in there, eh? I'm just running the JJ's that came with mine, though I've juggled some of the 12ax and 12au tubes I have around here into it. I've got to get serious about dousing my hum before I get more serious about the sound, I guess.
I've got an SCA-35 I had intended to update or 'donor out' to make a new one, and you give me a little inspiration.
Now if I could just get off me arse.... too much tonnage there I guess...
Thanks for the link!
DF
-
Thanks, I'll bring it to the next meet so you guys can give it a listen. I started with the jj's and then I discovered that the sca-35 doner I bought off ebay to rob the iron from had a quad of well used ge grey oval plates in it, BONUS! I tried them for a while and liked them better than the jj's. I think the ei's are pretty close to the ge's but I probably like the ge's best. I have another sca-35 I think I'm going to build another one and sell it to fund other projects. I hear ya, I have more irons in the fire than I can shake a stick at.
Mark
-
Welcome aboard, Mark! Nice work. You're gonna fit in just fine with this group. We have some really talented DIY'rs. Deadfish and I keep each other company while these guys go off into tube design neverland.
I just bought a Dynaco FM-3 tube tuner. I'm looking forward to the sound of tube radio. It's about time for another get together. Hopefully we can meet you at the next one.

I just stumbled across this forum and found this group quite by accident. I just thought I'd introduce myself and give you a little background. I used to be a hard-core 2 channel guy (AR SP6C, Acoustat Monitors, SOTA table, etc.) but have moved to a combo HT/music room/system.
System:
Dynaudio Contour 3.3
Dynaudio Center
Alon Centris Surrounds
ServoDrive ContraBass Sub driven by Crown MT1200 via Symmetrix Parametric EQ
Sunfire Cinema Grand Amp
Parasound 1201 Mono's for the surrounds
Theta Casanova Pre/Pro
Modded Panny RP53 w/SDI out
Key Digital HD LEEZA scaler
NEC XG135 PJ
Stewart 92" 1.85 screen
I work for a computer company in my 'real' job and run a small internet business on the side doing room design/analysis and selling acoustic treatments.
FYI, there's going to be a meet of folks from the AVS site on June 18th(www.avsforum.com/avs-vb). Go to the home theater meets section and check out the thread. Mark Seaton formerly of ServoDrive and now of Seaton Sound (and partnered with Tom Danley of Danley Audio) will be there with his equipment giving a seminar on how to set up a room acoustically. Also, some of our regulars will be there including John Kotches.
I'd love to get added to the list for the get-togethers.
Bryan Pape
-
Hiya Bryan,
Welcome aboard :D
One thing is for sure, you've got us all beat when it comes to the HT thing. Unfortunately I've got a retirement party that have to go to on the 18th otherwise I'd love to go and hang out with the AV guys.
One of these days I'll finish my HT. Right now it's pretty putrid. Well, I shouldn't say that, it's really my TV that is the problem. The rest of it is OKish. But hey, I'm a two channel guy so what do you expect
When I finally get serious about HT, something tells me its probably going to involve lots and lots of tubes
-
Byran,
Welcome to the GAS. We are just a bunch of junkies who just can't find a cure. I am quite sure you can relate to that. Hope you can make it to one of our sessions. If I can I will try and make the AV event on the 18th.
Sturgus
-
Greetings, Bryan!
I echo the other fellas' sentiments, though personally, I'm not looking for a cure, but better 'fixes'. :D
Would like to make your meeting, if possible, tho it looks like you got a houseful comin'...
Will have to see.
(yah, JUST what I need, to get FURTHER caught up with A/V!!
I just got the wife used to NOT having a tv where the hifi was after 2 years.)
Thanks for the invite, and hope to see you soon, either there, or elsewhere!
Regards,
DeadFish
-
Honestly, I'm still a 2 channel junkie at heart. I get all kinds of flack from the other guys who do room acoustics because I do rooms to balance things out. I want a room to do stereo well and HT well. Now, if that means I only get the 90% solution for both, fine with me. Better than being perfect for one and too dead for the other. I still listen to way too much 2 channel to treat it like a dedicated HT.
I'll try to put something together at my place in the next couple months. The one on the 18th is at someone elses who I know.
-
Hi All,
Just found the forum and have been checking it out. Great to see a gateway group. I have to admit I am still a two channel guy, but I love to see and hear a great theater as well. I am in sales for one of the other St. Louis area shops I didn't see mentioned here..... :) Hopefully we can change that.
Rob
-
Hi Rob,
Welcome aboard!
Bryan is the HT guru amongst us. There are a couple of us that have feable HT's but you'll find that everybody else are two channel guys too. The majority of us are hardcore tube guys. There are a couple of solid state holdouts ...... but we're still working on them
So which store do you work at? The Screening Room?
edit - I just saw your email address at The Sound Room.....duh
anyway Welcome Aboard! (again)
-
Welcome Rob,
Good to have another inmate in our asylum! As Scott said, we have quite a few members from the dark side but we don't let that get to be a problem. Half the time, I don't understand what they're talking about anyway! I trust my ears.

Hi everyone,
Tim recommended I join this this little group so here I go! I began my interest in hi-fi almost 20 years ago when I purchased my Denon DP-23F turntable from Best Sound. I have steadily upgraded my system over these twenty years, switching from transistors to tubes and to more tubes, but I still have the Denon!
I have no real interest in home theater--two channels and a sub does most movies justice for me.
In the past two years I have swapped out most of my equipment for stuff that I am a lot happier with: NAD CD player for a Philips SACD player and Musical Fidelity DAC, NHT speakers for Triangles, Jolida amp for Conrad-Johnson, etc.
I listen to the Beatles, the Stones, Steely Dan, and I am starting to listen to a lot of classical and baroque. I still can't get into jazz though . . .
Anyway, that's about all the info I can think of by way of an introduction. Thanks! Eric
-
Howdy Eric!
Welcome to our neck of A/C!
Sounds from your interests that you will have plenty to interest you when folks get together, and in general from the info shared amoungst us.
NO RULES in terms of what kind of gear you like as some of us even like those cheap little Sonic Impact amps. If you like it good for you, and if you can convince some of us that it sounds good, good for us!
The more (opinions) the merrier! (if hairier!)
Glad to have you chime in.
What part of the 'greater St.L. area do you hail from?
I'm from the eastside of the river myself, but that don't stop me from selling a pint or two of blood to fund a trek to the westside for a listen, now and then... :)
Welcome!
Regards,
DeadFish
-
Eric, welcome to the club. It looks like you will fit right in, but we will have to work on that jazz thing a bit . You will find that all of the guys are very helpful and friendly. The neat thing is, among the group you will find all sorts of stuff. We have tubes, solid state, and even a few digital amps. All manner of speakers are to be found and all music is welcome. Hope that you will be able to attend some of the meetings. Always glad to have found another music lover to enjoy this addiction with. If you would like to get together and do some listening let me know. My place is always open for a session.
Sturgus
-
Thanks for the kind welcome! Of course I am open to jazz--I just haven't been bitten by the bug. I do own some jazz--brubeck, miles davis, coltrane, herbie hancock, pretty basic stuff that's probably in everyone's collection. I'll be on the lookout for gatherings, etc. Thanks again, Eric
-
Welcome Eric! It's always good to have new faces in the gang. Our group is getting so big that it's been difficult to fit everyone in at our get togethers so we're tending to have smaller group sessions. Ditto what Sturg said, my place is always open for a liston. I have some SACD's as well although I've been haunting the Goodwill stores for vinyl of late. :o
I have a bit of a freakish setup right now as I'm storing a fellow Gasser's system for him and I have a double Magnepan speaker setup that is way over the top. I'm biamping my setup with tubes and running the other system with really nice SS gear. I've created a monster!
Anyway you're welcome to a listen. Been meaning to have a few of you guys over, we've just been really busy with school starting and my girls' birthday parties etc.
Anyway, welcome to the asylum! Oh and rest assured, we have plenty of jazzers to share some good tunes with you.

Hello everyone,
I am a St. Louis based musician / composer / recording / mastering / audiophile / computer geek / music lover, and I would like to get involved! My curiosity and passion for music has no limits, and I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm.
As a kid, I used to visit my sister who at the time lived in Ballwin, a short walk to Flip's Stereo where I loitered excessively. Flip and Thom were absolutely the coolest. After graduating high school, I went to Miami where I earned a degree in Jazz from the University of Miami. I played bass on tons of sessions at the studio on campus. I used to hang out at Sound Components, where they had the Levinson HQD system. I was in a band with a drummer whose father had the Fulton J system with Levinson components. After college, I moved to LA, hoping to get an audition with Frank Zappa. That never happened. I got a job at Ametron Electronics in Hollywood, and my clients included people like Skunk Baxter and Bobby Colomby. I would loiter at Jonas Miller Sound, and attended a couple of Stereophile shows. I also held engineering jobs at various studios in LA. I've heard a lot of high end systems. Upon achieving LA burnout, I moved back to St. Louis where I was hired by Flip to work at the Crestwood Flip's Stereo. Since I returned to St. Louis in 1988 I have been very active in the music scene. One of the projects I am most proud of is this CD;
http://cdbaby.com/cd/downtownquartet
I played bass, as well as mixing and mastering.
I also recorded the Gateway City Big Band "Live At The Casa Loma Ballroom".
For the last 10 years I have been in a very successful local band called Groovethang, famous for our amazing Steely Dan and Earth, Wind, and Fire tribute concerts. Check out our site:
www.groovethang.net
I am always tweaking and improving my system, and I have an insatiable lust for vinyl and high rez digital. I am in the process of getting a zoning variance so I can build an addition for a dedicated listening room built from the ground up on the back of my house.
-
Welcome. Sounds like you'll fit right in. We're quite a mix of diverse talents, backgrounds, jobs, etc. - but we all love music and are all semi-neurotic about our systems.
Bryan
-
Welcome aboard! It's always great to have new faces and a musician to boot! I may have run into you at Flip's Crestwood as I did a lot of my loitering there too listening to Magnepans driven my Levinson towers. Those were the days. Sounds like you may be able to help us with our recording and distribution efforts we've been pursuing as well. Look forward to meeting you.
steve

Hiya Larry,
Welcome aboard! Be sure to watch this circle for upcoming events. Fall and winter seem to be our most active times regarding listening sessions. Speaking of which....maybe its time for a new post about a mini-gathering :green:
-
I used to sell lots of Maggies. Levinson power amps were a particularly good fit for them. Vandersteens were also a big favorite. That big listening space in the front of the Crestwood Flip's was pretty great - very high ceiling, no rear wall issues.
-
Welcome! looking foreward to seeing you at one of the get-togethers Larry.

Here you'll find pics of most of the gatherings we've had at various peoples homes.

That should just about cover the majority of it unless I missed something (which I likely did). You'll find that we are pretty loosely organized. Our gatherings are mainly smaller ones and sort of irregular. We do have a couple of major ones though, The Christmas bash in December and our Music Caravan in May. Steve, Tim, and myself are about the only ones that can handle big crowds (15+ people) at a time hence the smaller gatherings.
Don't feel intimidated though, if you want to host a gathering, just make a post and let everybody know the max number of people you can comfortably handle. :green: Oh, and don't worry about your system. We are more about the camaraderie and music aspect of this hobby than being obsessed with gear (although we do have some really cool gear in the group  ).
-
Hey Larry! Glad to see you wandered in!
Me and the wife have enjoyed 'Groove Thang' more than once and look forward to more.
Always looking forward to what kind of music people like who PLAY music I like, if you know what I mean.
Looking forward to meeting you, somewhere along the way.
You've found a good group!
Best Regards,
DeadFish

So nice to hear from the fans.
There is a Groovethang offshoot in development. We will be focusing more on the smooth jazz element, including original music. There is no name yet for this group, but I will post info as it becomes available.
Looking forward to meeting all of you as well.
-
Hello everyone. My name is Josh and I am just getting into high quality audio. I don't have a setup yet, but am trying to learn and listen as much as I can. Briefly about myself, I am a resident in Internal Medicine as St. John's and am a St. Louis native. I currently reside in U. City. I look forward to participating in this group and picking some of your brains.
-
Welcome Josh!
New members are always welcome here. I'm sure if you ask any one of us you'll get different advice on putting together a "good" system but all good information. We're all on our own journeys. We're pretty low key without a lot of equipment envy though. It's more about the music for us.
steve
-
Fresh meat :thumb:
If you're looking to put a system together Josh, I think a good plan would be to just ask here who's got what they would like to get rid of. I think each of us have about 5 spare systems we could sell :icon_lol:
-
Josh, Welcome aboard. Glad to have another like minded chap who is worthy of corruption.:green: Just like Steve said we are very laid back and love music almost as much as we love gear. :D You are more than welcome to drop by and have a listen. I also would take heed to what Turbo said. There is a lot of extra gear among the group. You may be able to put together something that strikes your fancy. Look forward to meeting you.

Hi Josh, welcome to the mutation zone. We'll have you on the path to sonic perfection before you know it.

Welcome aboard Josh :thumb:
Since you are just getting serious about a rig, be sure listen to as many members systems as possible. We've got loads of variety you can listen to. After you take most of them in, then you can shoot for the sound that turns you on the most. Big thing is, don't get over anxious. If you do, it will cost you in the long run.
-
Hey Josh, Welcome Sir!
Are you a 2 channel or home theater guy, or both?
Heed these words, they are very true:
Big thing is, don't get over anxious. If you do, it will cost you in the long run.
Bob
-
Just want to say thank you for the warm welcome. To clarify, I am interested in 2 channel. My goal is to put together a dedicated audio system for music-listening only. I will try my best to take things slow and to get a lot of listening in before purchasing, but you all know how difficult that can be.
-
Hello GAS! I had a conversation with electricbear and he referred me to this group for more local audiophiles. I would be very interested to come listen to some nice homebuilt systems and chat about audio configurations. I live in west county currently, and I have been doing car stereo since I turned 16 and got my first car. Now I am 23 and have been designing and building home stereo with the help of winISD and bassbox pro softwares. My dream job when I was looking at colleges was to design stereo components, but I ended up going to UMR and graduated with an electical engineering degree last december. I guess I'll have to settle with making it my hobby. I'll be posting up some interesting questions on here about some ideas I have for my new car and home stereo configurations. Hope you all are ready for some tough questions. :icon_lol:
-
Welcome to the GAS Gang. You'll certainly have the chance to listen to a VERY wide variety of systems from this group. We have a few other DIY'ers also in the crowd.
Where out West do you live? I'm in Wildwood.
Bryan
-
Glad you found your way here. You're going to have some fun.
-
Welcome aboard :thumb:
Like Bryan said, you'll have plenty of different types of systems to listen to. You need to make it out to as many members homes as you can so you can start forming your own opinions on what type of sound you like the best. Speaking for many of us, just drop us a PM and I'm sure each of us would be happy to have you over to give our systems a listen. In September I should be hosting the annual GAS blowout so watch these pages :green:
Remember, there is no 'perfect' reproduction in audio regardless of how something measures. The only audio-absolute is how you prefer to have your music served up. Once you get a feel for solid state, digital, analog and tubes, then you can start building your system around what turns you on the most. Don't be in too big of a hurry either. It will cost you loads of money if you become impulsive (been there, done that).
-

You're done????

I live right near westport plaza, but Im looking at houses now so I won't be in this same place next year. My biggest thing in audio is getting the bass as punchy as possible. I been messing around with isobaric systems and I am going to try a regular push/pull system whenever I have time.

I used to compete in car stereo as well, and was a bass head. I had a car that would push close to 140db back in 1993, before those kinds of SPL numbers were common. You'll quickly stop putting so much emphasis on bass once you get into home stereo, because just like car stereo bass is the easiest thing to get right. Our ears just aren't good at telling tonal differences on bass notes, I'd expect your emphasis will quickly change to the midrange - getting that right is much more of a challenge. And the real magic of home stereo is getting imaging the way you want it, something you can never do in a car.
Since you're house shopping, get some ideas about what a proper audio room should be and add that to your list of what your house needs :thumb:

My biggest thing in audio is getting the bass as punchy as possible.
Welcome Mr. Centipede.
You need punchy? We GOT punchy 8) aa
Looking forward to seeing you at some of of the houses dude!
Again, Welcome to GAS. :thumb:

I also would like to offer a hearty welcome and a word of caution. Hanging out with these guys can cause life altering consequence's . :D Escape while you can. If you do decide to stay then I suggest some sort of therapy and looking for a second job, you will need them both.

Hi all,
I met a few of you this past weekend at Daves place. It was a great time and I'm looking forward to meeting more of you and hanging out on the board with all of you.
Looking forward to the next meet.
Paul
-
hi Paul,
it was great to meet you and hang out with a few other AK folks as well. Dave's house/vintage stereo store was awfully cool and I walked away with a greater appreciation for the big horns.
The K-horns loaded the room so easily and it was quite an experience.

I'm new to this forum but it's cool to see a group of audiophiles get together, strength in numbers and all that. I would like to maybe get in on some of the demoing going on in and around STL I'm from St. Louis but right now I'm stuck in Columbia. I came over from AVS and AV123, I really like the whole regional setup going on over here. Anyway just saying hi, looks like I have a lot to learn fro you guys.
If anyone is interested, I am selling a Klipsch Reference 5.1 set up, PM me if interested, or just have questions.
-
Hey Big Rick!
Is that like Columbia the country or Columbia, IL??
I know that IL is like the other side of the world, and all, and I'm 50 miles from Scott F., but I still get over there now and then.
And we still boogie on THIS side of the river as well, if G and Mike were here to tell you!
Just keep yer eyes and ears open. If I ever get more of my home deconstruction healed, I'll be hoping to having folks over.
Welcome aboard!

Columbia MO actually, a little about the same distance away though. I go to Mizzou.

Woot! Mizzou grad here ... I really miss Columbia!
Welcome to the group.
-
Welcome aboard Rick :thumb:
You'll definitely have to make the trek in from Mizzou. We've got a pretty good variety of different systems to listen to, everything from digital amps and high powered solid state to high powered tubes to SET's and Hi-E speakers. Be careful though, listening some of these systems can be detrimental to your wallet.
Be sure to watch the GAS Circle for upcoming events, in fact the next one is at (the other) Rick's on 11/8.

Welcome to the club Rick. Good to have you on board! :thumb:

Hi, TurboFC3S/Ryan over at AVSforum mentioned your site and I followed. I am into audio and video gear. I have a collection of old and older vintage gear. I have vinyl which I keep collecting for some reason. I am trying to put together my first LCD purchase and will need to replace an older broken Sony 5.1 receiver. Plus I am looking at having my home theater feature a modern set of speakers and a vintage set, both at 5.1 and 5.0 resp. I enjoy the gear and the music, but don't have enough cash to go audiophile. :)
I am Bo and I live in Troy, IL and I am an audio and audio gear aholic. :)
I am interested in the 11/8 meeting but have many things on my plate this weekend, but look forward to involving yall in some of my pet projects.
Bo

Welcome Bo!
Glad to have another HT (Home Theater) guy here.
Bob
-
Bo!
We gotta talk!
I'm your nearest 'new best friend'. :green:
I work at the knife shop up in Troy, out by the truck stop and I live in collinsville.
My listening room is a total wreck as I have major renovations going on right now, and I don't get out to St. Louis gigs all the time, but I do make some and DO intend to make more. (yeah, guys, I know, but I'm the guy that HAS to work saturdays!)
I've got a fair share of vintage with at least a couple Dynaco amps and Altec speakers, besides some 'other stuff'.
When I *can* get to st louis, like out to Scott's (hmm, just about 65 miles for you) we can maybe carpool, so you are not too far off the map!
Talk atcha soon.
Bill

Hey Bo, thanks for coming by ... sounds like you'll fit right into the group! There are plenty of old farts into vintage stuff
On question, what's the significance of WEDWEB?
-
There are plenty of old farts into vintage stuff
Hey, we resemble that remark....well...some of us do.
Welcome aboard Bo :thumb:
-
Bill, I bought a display case out there one time and I have some BSA knives I was wanting some advice on.
The WEDWEB is the first three letters of my last name and the web/internet. It is the shortest easiest logon name I could come up with. Too bad someone already has the website.

Welcome to the mutation zone. The more time you spend around us the more your sense audio normality will get warped, just ask MerRev. Only joking, we are all about the fun aspects of our little hobby. Getting together, listening to music and takng shop.
Glad you made it on board.

[/quote]
Yo! I would assume that you are the same Spkr_Bldr from Audioholics. Thanks for the link to this site. So far it is pretty damn cool.
You were big in car audio huh maybe you can tell me what you think of my system. 100% done by me including the sub box. It's not a BOOM box but it booms very much but quietly, you know what I mean. Decent soundstage and all but it is in a truck not the greatest of formats to run high SQ.
We need to get together somtime just to hang and talk stereo and music.
My home shit sucks and I NEED new stuff badly.
Well anywa'ys I'm new, here cool site

Just to let everyone know if I am an altectonian........this is my youngest son in 2005 at age 2 with my recent purchase of 4 Stonehenge I's. Though 2 have had their woofers replaced with RS woofers, they still sound good. And I did pick up another tweeter to replace the RS tweeter in the 2nd from the right.
Bo

Any guesses on the price I paid for each? Not counting the driving up and back to get them in Springfield.....

Yea, that's me ... I competed in some USAC competitions back in the mid-late 90's with a '91 RX-7 Turbo. I was pretty 'cutting edge' at the time, using Focal home audio drivers and an all active crossover setup. I even had an Infinite Baffle sub setup at one time, where the back side of the 15" woofer was vented to the outside air. I always did SQ competitions, I still have a stack of the Adcom amps I used at the time ... couldn't bring myself to sell them, and now they're worth more than they were new! Pure Class-A amps btw.
I'd gladly checkout your truck setup. I still have some pretty good ideas for car setups, and could measure things for you with my software. Are you a cigar smoker? There's a cigar shop in Chesterfield Valley that's a good 1/2 way meeting point
-
Turbo: Adcom huh, making me drool over here. I only wish I had amps that nice. Measuring my system sounds good except you will probably think it sucks compared to....
It could probably use some work, if not a lot of work. Everyone I know thinks it's pretty good, as do I on some days. Other day's I just want to rip it out and start again.
You got PM and I don't mean the crampy kind.
-
Those were $15 each at a Springfield Goodwill. I was up there for a class, found them at lunch, bought them, drove home on Friday, drove back up on Saturday with the van and picked them up and drove home. So, a little more than $15 each after gas and a tweeter for about $12. :)
I have an Altec 9872-B cabinet and gear for a center channel. I don't think I need a subwoofer. The room will be 15'x13'. :)

Been in St Louis now for 5 years...live in Lake St Louis and work in Westport Area.
Started out long ago with Rotel gear and entry level B&W speakers (wish I could get those DM302's back!)
Graduated to McIntosh integrated amplification and B&W N803.
Played around with a Cary SLI-80 with HD600s...no more phones and tubes for me thanks.
Recently upgraded to McIntosh MC501 monoblocks which really OPENED up the 803's!!!
Tried BAT preamp and cdp but was not overly impressed....hello Audiogon
Sold my 803's and bought a pair of AV124 Encore x-lx towers as interim until I pick up my Thiel CS7.2s.
Currently running a Pioneer Elite DV-47A into a Parasound JC-2 pre (AWESOME) into the MC501's.
I'm due to pick up the mighty Thiel CS7.2s this weekend.
Nest item on the shopping list is the McIntosh MCD500...as soon as the money tree blossums once again!
I like jazz from Ahmad Jamal to Ornette Coleman, Thelonius Monk, Miles, Coltrane, Byrd, etc...
Fusion such as Weather Report, Michael Landau and RTF...saw them live at the recent FOX concert (AWESOME)
Avantgard jazz-rock such as Whit Dickey, Tony Levin/Robert Fripp/Crimson side projects, Joe Morris, Elliot Sharp, John Zorn ...love the Electric Masada Project and Book of Angels
Crooners like Sinatra, Crosby, Bennett, Willie Nelson and Elvis Costello...Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall, Patricia Barber.
Still appreciate ELP and the Doors, some Eagles but because most of the recordings where done so poorly I'm not as fond of listening to such.
Occasional hardcore punk or lounge music when I'm in weird moods...
I like attending concerts at Jazz at the Bistro, the Fox, Powell and Sheldon.
So far I've seen John Scofield, Mike Stern and good 4 the soul.
I still kick myself for missing Ahmad Jamal at the Sheldon.
Starting to build a sizeable classic collection...Lots of Sibelius, Shostakovich, Mahler, Bruckner, Debussy, Stravinsky, Liszt, Chopin and even a few operas to boot!!!
Tim Simpson mentioned this site to me so I thought I'd chime in and say hello to all the local audio junkies!
I also enjoy motorcycle riding on the backroads around New Melle, Marthasville, Defiance, Augusta area...at a fairly brisk pace, early on weekend mornings when traffic is light. Looking forward to warmer weather
-
Welcome aboard! From your background it sounds like you'll fit right in around here. Lots of good music your talking there and gear too. I'd love to hear Dave Holland at the Sheldon this weekend but I'm a little light on cash these days. Saw Metheny and Mehldau there and the audience didn't want to go home.
Look forward to meeting you at the next get together.

Welcome aboard and here's to hoping you host a get-together when those big Thiels are set up. We'll have to work on that "tube aversion" It's been quiet around GAS world lately, but it will pick up as the weather improves. Hope to meet you soon.

Welcome. I started talking with the guys on this board a few months ago and it has been great. It sounds like you have a nice system. I agree with Blackmore that you need to let us hear the Thiels when setup! :)

I'd be happy to have some quests over for some listening sessions though I have somewhat of a dediicated listening room with only one chair so we'd have to take turns!
Here's an older picture of my layout....
The front end is fairly dead....probably 50-60db drop...no echo whatsoever when I'm yelling at the cat for jumping up on the rack when I get up to change CDs.
Since then I have added two rockwool stuffed wicker hampers along the front wall in place of the couch cushions.
The Encore x-ls are going to a friend once the Thiels show up.
As far as breaking me of "Tube Aversion".... I love the sound of tubes but I just don't want to deal with the operational hassle, the heat draws the cat and most important I don't like being beholdened to tube dealers. A properly synergized SS system gets me 99% of the way there imo.
Cats love any SS gear that runs in Class A...and tubes!!! great place for catnapping

Bryan
The woofers are still at Thiel for refurb and the covers are being replaced with new fabric. Should be done soon but most likely next weekend...anticipation....
The Encore's bottom out around 42-45hz and do a pretty good job of pressurizing the room, the Thiels rated down to 25hz should be devestating for those not acclimated to subwoofer systems. I have a pipe organ recording that will probably get me evicted and possibly do structural damage.
I recently replaced all my picture hangers with OOK's hooks and moved the acrylic fish tank into the hallway....just to be safe
-
Now your talking! aa We have some particularly well recorded pipe organ discs don't we guys?

Welcome to the club. Maybe you can bring your equipment to the next GAS party so we can demo it in a larger room? :D
I made the mistake of carrying the first monoblock (unboxed) from the car into the apartment.
I grabbed my Salamander rack with casters for the second...much easier!!!
The Thiels (at ~170lbs each) are going to be even more fun to move
-
I've been lurking for quite awhile and thought I'd introduce myself...I'm also out in Lake St Louis, and was in U.City previously. System-wise, I'm running a Musical Fidelity X-Ray V3 CD player, into an X-DAC and X-10V3 tube line stage. This goes into a BAT VK-300x integrated amp, then out into Anthony Gallo Reference 3 speakers on Bright Star Audio stands, with a Gallo Reference 3 SA subwoofer amp powering the low end. Not the most high-end system imaginable, but I think it sounds pretty great.
Music-wise, I go in a lot of different directions; I'm a classically-trained pianist and worked as a rock and jazz keyboard player for many years before going back to school to get my MD. CD's in the last couple weeks include "Radiation" by UKZ (the new band with Eddie Jobson from UK and Trey Gunn from recent King Crimson), "Floating Point" by John McLaughlin, "Upojenie" by Pat Metheny and Anna Maria Jopek (absolutely gorgeous, BTW), "Yesterdays" by Jarrett/Peacock/Dejohnette, "Transformation," by Tal Wilkenfeld, "Train of Thought" by Dream Theater, and "Free at Last" by Josh Fix. I listen to a lot of older jazz (tons of Miles, Trane, Wayne, Chick, Herbie, Bill Evans, Jarrett pre- and post- trio) and newer stuff (Mehldau, Aaron Parks, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wallace Roney, Chris Potter, Adam Rogers, huge Metheny and Lyle Mays fan). I also do a lot of synth oriented prog stuff, a fair amount of random classical stuff (recent favorites would be Martha Argerich doing Shostakovich 1, and Pierre-Laurent Aimard's "Hommage a Messiaen"), and some electronica.
Looking forward to hearing about people's systems and music recommendations!

I just stumbled on to this site and was impressed with the systems and community. By way of introduction, I live in South City and have the following system: Thiel CS3.7's (still breaking in) Classe Delta 2200 amp, Meitner Supermodified BiDat DAC, CEC TL5100 Belt-driven transport, Shunyata power gear and Harmonic Tech wire.
My musical tastes cover just about everything except opera (I've tried but I can't find the hook) I'm currently considering adding preamp to my system but have NO idea where to start and would love to audition something equal to my system with tubes. Anyway, just wanted to say "hi" to fellow audiophiles out there.
Vance
-
Welcome aboard, Vance. You're welcome to hear my VTL 5.5 preamp. It's fairly neutral for tubes but quite resolving and dynamic.
steve
-
Well Vance, it's a shame all we listen to is opera.
Just kidding. Don't think I've ever heard opera at any get together.
Welcome. Hope to see you soon!
Bob
-
Steve, I've always wanted to hear VTL gear. I've been running my BiDat direct into various amps via balanced cables for years and it's pretty amazing. However, now that I might be able to afford a decent preamp, I've been told I should check one out. What year did yours come out?
-
Bob,
That's a relief. :D Let me know when the next gathering is.
Vance
-
What year did yours come out?
Mine is a 2001 model. I'm not sure when this model originally came out. Maybe we can try it out in your system. One of my monoblocks is currently down so my system is a little out of balance right now. The 5.5 has balanced outputs. I can bring all my opera collection. No one else will listen to it.
steve

Let me know when the next gathering is.
Just keep tuned in to the GAS Circle for further gatherings. aa
Again, Welcome!
Bob
-
Steve,
I'd love to try your VTL in my system...and I'd be happy to listen to anything you bring. Email me when you're in the mood. I'd love to have another pair of audiophile ears to access...yours....not an extra pair on my ugly head....that'd be too confusing.

Sounds like a great system to say the least Vance. :thumb: There's plenty of tube pre's in this group to go round. A few of us mentioned trying to be more active this summer even if it is just a small gathering. It's good to see another crazy.
-
Hi everyone,
Well, I spent the last 1 1/2 years thinking I was moving quickly, and now I'm staying. So, I just was curious about how to get involved. I live in Clayton (north part near U City). I'm not sure if my system is still there in the footer, but basically a modded Modwright Transporter, Red Wine audio Isabella pre, monoblock Spectron Musician III Mk 2's, Dali Euphonia MS4 speakers, and all cables (power, interconnect, speakers) are ASI Liveline. Oh, and I use also for home theater - just two channel - have my flat screen and cable box hooked up. Use a PS Audio PPP for conditioning. Anyway, I hope to meet with folks soon...
Jim

Looks like you'll fit right in Jim. Nice equipment!
Keep an eye here on the GAS Circle for upcoming get togethers.
Welcome to GAS. aa

Hey guys and gals I'm finally movng back to stl from como, I'm psyched to hear some of your systems and start building on my theater. If anyone has any job openings for me, I would be psyched, send me a pm if you know of anything. Thanks to all of you before for helping me figure out my sub situation, I ended up with the hsu10 from parts express and haven't looked back, now I just want to get another one.

When it comes to gatherings, we've got Christmas in September coming soon at my place :xmas:

Thanks for all the greetings, guys! :D Except for the first week of August, I'd be game for a get together any time. Looks like a great group and I can't wait to hear your gear. I'm also always looking for audiophile recordings of every genre.
-
Welcome all! Sorry to be a bit late. Been pretty busy lately.
It's a great bunch of guys. I think we have a tentative GTG July 25th and then Scott's place in September. I'm going to see if I can get something maybe in August at my place.
We also still need to figure out when we're going to do the caravan this year. Tried to do it earlier but too many conflicts. It's a great time wandering around the local audio shops, record stores, etc.

Just thought I'd pass along to newcomers how great GAS is and I've only been involved for a few days. Steve and Sturg came over on Friday for a VTL preamp listening party (courtesy of Steve!) and we had a blast. You won't meet cooler or more knowledgable dudes. :thumb: Unfortunately, now I've got to look for a way to invest in tube gear. Thanks guys.

A word of welcome to all of the newer folks that have cropped up here lately, from me as well.
I'm a little slow, and I lurk a lot and some say I don't exist anymore since I never show up anywhere hardly, but nonetheless, welcome to one of the best circles out there. :thumb:
All seriousness aside, hope to meet and greet somewhere along the line, if my boss will ever let me have a saturday off for a gtg.
There is a lot of great listening with the guys of St. Louis, and you get as good as you give.
Hope you have a great time here!
Best Regards,

GAS rules! Sturgas and Chris came over last night for a "tube rolling" symposium and man did I learn a lot. I'm going through serious preamp withdrawl! I've only been hanging out for a few weeks and I've already had to re-think my approach to audio. This is going to be an interesting year! Thanks, guys! :thumb:

thanks for the invite Vance. I enjoyed the big Thiels immensely and your room just flat out rocked. :drums:
I'm really starting to feel the need for bass after last night.
-
Only a week or two in the GAS circle and we've already got you thinking about spending money. There are so many different systems to hear and different approaches in the GAS circle. If you ever want to drive way out west on I70 to hear some SET and Lowthers let me know. Glad you're with us, Vance.
P.S. Chris--get those Altecs up and running for your bass fix.

 Post number 136 is when I said something about you spending more money.
Need I say more?
These GAS guys are baaaad.
Sturg and Chris are great guys indeed!
Bob

Blackmore,
I'll take you up on hearing those Lowthers when I'm back from vacation! :)
Vance

Tell me about it Bob. They're even tempting me to run cables to another room...but that would cause marital discord and, inspite of being an audio crazy, I have my priorities straight.

you may be right about that one Vance. Sometimes we all get a little nuts and we have to step back to realize just how good we have it.
Thanks Bob, right back at you of course.
Scott, I think we're all looking forward to your delayed Christmas in July party ( I guess we'll have to let it slide since your daughter stole the show this year ).

Hi
My name is Brian Doane and I am new to GAS but a life long 2 channel junkie. It is great to see that there are other people who enjoy this hobby, I started to think music had been killed by MP3. I am really looking forward to being involved in GAS and sharing a really great hobby.

Welcome, Brian!

Vance

Hi Brian glad to see you found your way here. Will we be seeing you on Saturday evening?

I just registered. I design and build tube equipment for myself. I signed
up in part because I am disassembling a big mono horn system, using a VOT
bottom cabinet and an Altec 1804 --their largest multicell -- horn. I've
been using an Altec 288B driver [just rebuilt by Great Plains]. Though it
would be wonderful to find a new home for the complete developed horn
system with another very crazy mono music fan, it is much more likely that
it will come apart and the big bass box will be available, cheap, locally. Early
plywood [better] cabinet, Jensen curved cell 15inch driver in it right now...
I'm not leaving music or St Louis, just using a different setup at the shop.

Welcome Carter. Sounds like you're in the late stages of "the disease".
Congratulations and welcome aboard Sir! :thumb:

Well, come in, Carter! :)
Glad to have you aboard.
You'll find a few of us Altec freaks, though I haven't gotten the grab on mono yet.
We can always use another good head around here.
Hope to see you around.

Welcome aboard Carter! You'll find lots of tubes and horn fans here.

Hi Carter,
Welcome aboard. We talked years ago and if I remember right, I think you were using something like a 10Y or a VT52 to drive your mono rig. Too cool.
As for takers on the mono rig, maybe Willie. He runs a pair of 1804s and VOTT bass bins in stereo mode. He might be interested in trying something different. The only other horn guys are Bill (deadfish) and me. I've got 511s and 416s and some (gasp) Klipsch's. I'm completely out of room. In fact I've been thinking about selling my 511/802D horns. Gunna keep the 416s as I use them as woofers for my open baffles.
So are you entering the stereo world in the shop? You mentioned a different setup. Interested in my 511's? I'd be willing to trade for something cool or maybe some tubes.
Lemme know,
Scott

I set up an RCA theatre horn with a TAD driver on a Petite
Onken/Altec 414A for the PA at the shop--still mono :)

Blackmore,
I'll take you up on hearing those Lowthers when I'm back from vacation! :)

Vance, let me know when you plan on going.. :green:

If the VOT cabinet is too expensive [or too large] what about something
smaller, and free? Tom gave me a Jensen 12inch Ultraflex cabinet, the parent
of the Petite Onken, and I used it with a 414A as a test with the RCA theatre
horn. It is about 10% smaller than a Petite Onken at 22 x 16 x 29. Designed
around the Jensen H-222 or similar 12" coax. Missing some ugly trim that secured
some awful grill cloth. Bad dark "cherry" finish with a test patch of Altec grey
[I have a formula that's close]. 48 lbs. Old 3/4inch plywood, mitered corners.
Veneer defects. Ugly. Free, you pick up [midtown]. Message here or quicker
by email. Limited time offer before, well, the dumpster.

Hello all,
My name is Matt and I'm a nube at hifi. Currently I have my own custom integration business for a few years now but have been around the industry for over 20 years. My career and audio passion started in car audio as so many of us did. So 20 years later I'm realizing that my hifi system and knowledge are sorely lacking. It will be so nice to get to read and chat with all of you.
P.S. I do have some friends in the hospitality industry in St. Charles that might be able to help with organization of a St. Louis Audiofest. Though I can't speak for them I will be glad to volunteer time to the cause.

Hi Matt!
Well-come along to the GAS group!
I'm sure you have had lots to read, and glad to have another voice in the local crowd.
Speaking of local, how local are you? I'm over in Illinois, so don't see a lot of the west-side folks, but there are plenty of us all over.
(BIG HINTS TO ANY NUBEES IN ILL.)
I have to ask, what is a 'custom integration business' ?
Just a new term, I had to ask.
More later...
Best Regards,
DeadFish

I'll have to check in with you folks from time to time. Been in the hobby
for close to 40 years. I now live in No. Illinois, north of Rockford. If you have
a big gathering, I'd try to come down...especially if I have vacation available to do so.
regards,
Hibuck....

Deadfish,
Thanks for the welcome. Questions answered last to first. About the business, I guess I didn't fully list the name Custom Electronics Integrator, CE Pro, TV guy...whatever. Also do video calibration since I'm a bit more qualified as a videophile. Location wise I'm out of St. Charles, MO. Hinted at that but never really said.

Hello! I'm Mike Yaffe, from Belleville, IL, and I've been into audio and a pro musician since the mid-70's. I like to buy/sell/trade gear, records, and like to hang out listening to music. I'm known in various forums on the net, and there are various here I have crossed paths with. I'm looking forward to integrating with other likemindeds here and learning more about the gear I can't afford! I'm sure we'll have a chance to interact. :green:

Hey Mike,
Welcome to the GAS gang. There's a lot of diversity here; big watt amps/almost no watt amps, vinyl, CD, Computer, 78s, Open baffle, electrostats, big beautiful boxes, ugly little DIY, etc. (I think I have most of that at my house) Hope you can make it out to a listening session soon.
-
Hello all, another newbie here. I have a decent system that I am slowly building bit by bit into what I want while I learn. I am aiming for a vintage 70's tube system. I also have a few components I want to unload that I will put in another post. Anyway, greetings to everyone.

You're Chris's brother? What'd your parents do to deserve *two* audiophiles in the same family? I kid. Welcome to GAS! You'll get to hear just about every type of system imaginable if you're interested. Chris has helped me out tremendously by loaning equipment and expertise. So let us know if you want to try some things.

Ohh.....he means *THAT* Chris!
Yea. Welcome dude. Any friend of Chris's, is a friend of mine.

Welcome to the gang. Word of advice, never, ever take advice from Chris. :nono: If this warning is not heeded you will end up with ten pairs of speakers,20 amps, and thousands of tubes. If he tries to introduce you to a fellow named John, or Scott, RUN AWAY!!!! or your life as you know it will be ruined forever.

Hehe
Yeah, Chris is a terrible influence! I've been into saltwater tanks for 10 years and recently redid my home theater in the basement. I've been wanting to give it a try for a while now and my room needs some serious acoustical treatment. I've got an 8 foot aquarium on one wall, then a closet, then another 5 feet of aquarium. The other wall is drywall and a sectional sofa. The back of the room opens up to the stairs going up. So, if anyone wants to help troubleshoot the acoustics with us that would be a huge help and start down the downward spiral:D I live in Oakville off Telegraph and Heintz Road.
I'm thinking about starting with bookshelf speakers and going from there. Chris likes the Merlins and I was checking out Ryan's Vapor lines and want to plan a visit there as well. Thanks for the warm welcome:)

I have a pair of Salk SoundScapes that would be perfect for you.

Welcome Nanook.
Yes - there are a lot of bad influences in our group... You'll be hooked in no time. There are a variety of systems to listen to - vintage to cutting edge, horns to panels, SS, tubes, hybrids, TT's to computer audio, etc.
The room sounds like it will be a challenge with all of that glass from the aquariums but we can certainly give it a shot...
And a welcome to High Figh (Herb) who seems to have been missed in this thread.

A 60's-70's ish vintage tube system with decent speakers can be very satisfying and a lot of fun to listen to. :drums: :guitar:
Something like a Mac or Fisher amp/receiver, maybe Dynaco driving some Advents or Allisons just makes you wanna tap your toes, forget about the equipment, and just listen to the music! :banana piano:

Hi there, fellow St. Louisans! I'd like to introduce myself as a long time stereophile and recent student of DIY speaker building. By stereophile, I mean I've collected several small systems over the years; my main listening is CDs through a small tube pre, old solid state Mc amps, and old Magnepan speakers. I'll immediately correct that: my main listening is in Powell Hall during Symphony season; we have an exceptional orchestra!
Recently I've decided to learn a bit more about speaker design, so I launched a self-study program of reading Alden's Speaker Building 201, Dickason's Cookbook, and lurking about these forums. I've decided that my first project will be a simple sub-woofer, which I'll complicate by changing drivers, and sealed-ported, to experience for myself what different Qs sound like. I know this is a simple project, and I've seen you all be more than helpful in designing and posting graphs for those who ask, but my intention is to try to design this myself and intentionally control a few variables so my ears can experience what the numbers say. I'm sure to have a bunch of basic questions, so I look forward to your comments and help.
I've been following several threads about building different designs, and have already learned a lot from your discussions, so Thank You all for sharing your knowledge with this newcomer.

Welcome Tom!
Glad to see you found your way over buddy.

Welcome Tom! May I suggest a free sub box program "winISD pro" by linearTeam. http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?download=winisdpro (http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?download=winisdpro) That is what I used for my first sub box DIY project. The graphs can really help you visualize what a specific box size will sound like before you start building anything.
-
Hi Tom, welcome on board. You'll find the GAS crew are a great bunch of guys.
-
Welcome aboard Tom! I agree about the symphony--we try to get over there as much as possible. Do you play for them? Good luck with the speaker design--there are lot's of experts in GAS to help.
steve k
-
Thanks for the "Welcomes." No, Steve, I don't play for the Symphony, I just have season tickets, so I enjoy the music greatly. I've been plodding my way through WinISD and a program I bought from Parts Express called Winspeakerz; they seem to do much the same except Winspeakerz cost bucks and WinISD does more (I think). I had some issues entering drivers in WinISD until I stumbled across some tutorial material on the Web and started entering less data. Now my questions center on why different choices work best: i.e.- Why does one size box work better than another for a sealed sub; or how do I choose a tuning frequency for a ported box? I'm just starting to dig into Speaker Building 201, so I'm sure I'll begin finding some guidance on these basics soon, otherwise, I'll be bugging you all for help- I'll let you know when I'm truly stuck.
Meanwhile I had my first experience breathing MDF dust cutting a hole in my sub box, so I'm off to buy some paper masks before I cut again.
Cheers!
Tom
-
MDF is one of the nastiest thing in the world you can breathe Tom. Not just the physical dust, but the outgassing of the formaldehyde and other chemicals it creates should be avoided at all costs. I won't even cut it in my workshop (which is in my house) anymore. I'll take it outside if I have to cut it.
Bob
-
I appreciate the warning! I've been cutting and sanding in my garage, and I don't plan on much more, since it's obvious that my talents do not include woodworking. But I'll be extra careful now... I'm much better at auto stuff than carpentry, I rarely have to fabricate car parts.
Masks and lots of air flow it will be, and birch ply from now on...
Tom
-
Well done on the birch ply. That's good stuff. I avoid MDF if at all possible, and won't buy it by choice. The good stuff is more, but the advantages FAR outweigh the costs.
A fellow car guy huh?

We've got some Saabs, both new and used, here at the dealership. I can pick a couple and set them aside for you. I think the sales departments are having a sale.

I would be interested in joining GAS, my system is a little meager by comparison to the kit most of you guys have here but i REALLY enjoy listening to it. I prefer vinyl because it allows me to tweak the system and hear the differences those small changes make. I have an old Technics SL-QD33 that i purchased off ebay not working and took it apart to "deoxit" all the contacts then i packed it with modeling clay (a little trick i learned form another board). I also made a cabinet lined with cork so my two daughters cant get their fingers on the stylus (after they did) and i bought a new ortophon 10. Since i had some extra cork left over i made a slipmat out of it and really liked what it did to the sound. My phono pre is a Musical Fidelity VLPS II with the power supply. my preamp is a little dot MKIV that i have upgraded the driver and power tubes on(Electro Harmonix and Voshkods - I think im hooked on tube rolling) i use that to drive either my Grado 225i headphones or a pair of monitors i have borrowed from a freind who works in the production business. I can say 90% of the upgrades i have made were from lurking on boards like this to find out what other peoples thoughts were on various topics, but i didnt know this group existed until i stumbled across it. When i found out there is a group of people that meet up to talk about the same thing (that my wife says im obsessed with) I couldnt be happier. I wound up getting 3 of my other freinds into vinyl but I dont really have anyone to talk to about what a difference it would make to upgrade different pieces in the chain.
-
Welcome! You've come to the right place to talk about and listen to vinyl. Just keep a hold of your wallet; we have a way of making you spend money.
We have lots of informal get togethers and about one or two big blowouts per year. Keep watching the GAS forum and see what we've got cooked up.
Speaking of blowouts, anybody want to hear stacked Advents in the front room? (they'll be driven by BATman)
-
Hello all,
My name is Theo and I'd love to join the group and perhaps listen to some different systems some time. I am in Creve Coeur and have been gradually upgrading to a point where I am pretty happy with my system for a small office. My source is an Ayon CD-5 (through which I often stream from my PC via a Musical Fidelity USB to coax converter). For speakers I have a Levinson 23.5 driving Revel Ultima Gems. Due to kids, I am on headphones quite a bit as well. I have two setups, one is a Eddie Current Zana Deux running Sennheiser HD800's. The other is a Schiit Mjolnir running HiFiMan HE-6's. I also have pairs of Audeze LCD-2's and Senn HD650's which don't get a lot of play right now.
I listen to a pretty broad selection of music: jazz, blues, rock, electronica, some classical - as long as it is well recorded I will probably enjoy it.
Hope to make introductions soon.
-
Welcome, Theo. We will be having a gathering shortly, and I hope you can attend!

Sounds like a nice system, and nice cans too Theo. Good to have you here ... I know I'll be hosting a small gathering soon, others will too I'm sure.

You funny, Brick. I had an old Volvo coupe in the 70's, I suppose. I say 70's cause it sure was ugly and it was a pretty foggy time. Not one of the slick ones. I could fix about everything there was to fix cause it was so simple and easy to access. Bout as simple as the Morris Minor cou-pe that preceeded it. All kinds of inexpensive choices in Calif in those days. A lot of male yuppies drove Morgan Flyers in SF. Not so inexpensive and had wooden frames. There was even a dealership. Anything to look cool, I supposed.

Hey Bob, tell Sturgus for me that he is missed.

I appreciate the welcome...I'll likely open up a new topic over the weekend to ask for the advice of this brain trust about what I'm calling my very own Mission Impossible. In brief, when I once had a large open space I had a 5.1 setup using four Acoustat Model 3 for mains and surround along with a Martin Logan Theater for center channel...long story short...since we've been in Webster I no longer have that big space but haven't yet parted [anyone else got that problem?] with the speakers...so...looking for any strokes of brilliance in terms of acoustical treatment that might help me work a miracle and allow the Acoustats to sound good in a much smaller space...cause...well...the Acoustats have been with me longer than my wife...and they've always been so nice to me! Details along with opportunities to opine when I open the topic. Thanks in advance!

Hi GAS. New to STL. Moved from Oregon, was a member of the Triode Society out there. If you have room for a young guy, with lot's to learn, who will (hopefully) keep his mouth shut, include me at your next gathering. I'm into vinyl, 2a3's and unusual solutions to age old problems. Setting up a very modest system in Maplewood, and excited to start building some speakers.
-
Welcome Batsong. Where at in Oregon? I lived north of North Bend.
Bo

Hi Bo. We lived in Portland and a small town called Sweet Home, over the pass from Sisters. Bend area is nice, lots of good fishing I hear.
-
Welcome to GAS, and welcome to STL.
I trust the weather we've been having recently is at or near your comfort level (chill, windy and rainy)?
Bob
p.s. You've got a couple posts under your belt. You should be free to roam about the place without me having to approve each post.
Sorry about the delays, especially on the first one.
-
Thanks Bob. It's true the cold rain does remind me of Oregon, but the sunlight has been something of a salve. I hear spring is very nice here.
-
Depends on your definition of "nice". I'd call it "wet and stormy".
Which, compaired to below zero and ice, then yea....it's an improvement.

Vinyl and 2A3s will warm the hearts of a lot of us old GASsers. :thumb: Glad you're with us and come out to a get-together and hang with us soon.

Really cool. Mark, I'm looking forward to it!

Welcome Batwing. We are getting geared up for a good run of events :thumb:

Hey, look at that, another single ended guy :thumb: Between Mark, Willie and my place, you'll have a really nice substitute for your old Triode Society. Hopefully you'll find us worthy.
Welcome aboard :green:

Sounds lika a lot of fun. Really loving my new city.

Hey now, Scott, there's an integrated 45 SET amp, and a 2A3 pair of SET monoblocs amidst the forest of PP amps in the man cave here. Just not any 211s or 300Bs :green:
And I have Batsong's new to him set of speakers, too.
-
Dave,
I forgot Chris (MerRev) too. He's got 2a3s and 300Bs too
As for Batsongs speakers, we'll have to arm wrestle on that one. Sure, you've got Altec 19s but I've got the KoRnziLLaS and Tannoys. One thing is for sure, he'll have plenty of variety to choose from to buy if he's looking to pick up (or build) a new pair of speakers :thumb:
-
Scott, I hear Zombie breeding season is just around the corner.

Hello,
I am new here although I have lurked about a little bit. I am friend of Sturgus, he has been telling me a lot about this site.
I am a audio novice and a music lover. My 2 channel equipment is a stroll down menory lane, equipment that I have salvaged, upgraded, or in a state of refurbishment.
It consists of: Thorens TD-160B, SME 3008 series II (improved), Shure V-15 with Jico SAS, Hafler DH 101 preamp chassis only with a Musical Concepts PasPro 1 board in it and an external PS; Hafler DH 220 with musical Concept upgraded PS and upgraded driver boards, B&W DM-6 speakers (yes, those old funny looking things).
I also have a basic 5.1 home theater blu-ray set up with a Denon 3813C AVR and B&W 68X seriesspeakers. For a vinyl option I have a old Kenwood KD-550, Denon DL-110 cartridge, and a Jolida JD-9 phono stage. I am in the process of modding the JD-9.
I prefer the sound of vinyl these days, even with the extra work load that comes with it.
I hope to meet some to you sometime to exchange ideas, etc.
Cheers, Bob

That's a good looking screen name you've got there. I like it.

No worries Sir, hope to see you at one of the gatherings.
Oh....and, may I be the first one to call you "BiSC".

Welcome aboard Bob. Glad to see you made it here. We have a great group of guys and you should fit right in.
The fact that you like vinyl will get you some brownie points around here. Word of warning watch out for a guy named Blackmoore and a fellow named Scott. :nono: They can cause you some serious financial problems. Also be quite aware of a guy that goes buy the name Catastrophe. All I will say is you will see. :green:

New member here. Thanks to Dave for the heads up on the circle. Was not aware it existed. Spend most of my time on AK where Dave has been very helpful on the local STL audio scene. A bit about me and my gear. Going back a few years so bear with me. Got really interested in music and audio gear back in high school. Has an uncle that was loaded with hi end gear. McIntosh and the like. That really lit my passion for the equipment. Couldn't afford that but got what I could. I recall some of that early gear. Yamaha amp, pre, small Infinity speakers. Can't recall any of the models. Getting ready to go off to college at Michigan State and upgraded to the Onkyo 4500 MKII, Technics SL-1600 table, Cerwin Vega speakers, Akai tape deck and about 1,500 LP's. You know, a party set up. Still have most of this in my collection of gear. Although I thinned the LP herd pretty hard to buy essentials like beer and food. They have served me well but sat idle on the sidelines post graduation. Life happened. Got married. Moved to St. Louis. Had kids, etc. About 5 years ago my kids got me an MP3 player as gift. Downloaded some tunes and thought... hey wait I have all those LP's boxed up in the basement. I should work on converting those to MP3. Started that project and realized how much I missed the analog sound. Things spiraled out of control from there. A list of my gear is listed below. Looking forward to spending some of my time here and hopefully meeting some of you in the near future.

Word of warning watch out for a guy named Blackmoore and a fellow named Scott. :nono: They can cause you some serious financial problems. Also be quite aware of a guy that goes buy the name Catastrophe. All I will say is you will see. :green:
Sturgus
Naa...I'm no bother. I've completely converted to all solid state, digital sources and speakers with 7 1/2" woofers and soft dome tweeters. Toobs are gone, vinyl is gone, high sensitivity speakers....pffft! I can't be bothered. I only listen to little girl with guitar music anymore...(does wendy o. williams count as a little girl w/guitar?)

Gotta love the darts  Besides, I thought the name Wendy O. Williams would have been warning enough :rotflmao: Then again, for some of the young whipper snappers 'round here I suppose punk from the late 70's were a little before their time.
....LAURA...where's my walker!

Welcome aboard Bob. Glad to see you made it here. We have a great group of guys and you should fit right in.
The fact that you like vinyl will get you some brownie points around here. Hello, My name is Rick and I am interested in joining the group. I am a friend of Sturgus and have been to a couple listening sessions, had a great experience and look forward to attending more in the future. I will drop you a PM with my info and hope to meet you all in person sometime soon. Growing up in STL my family was in radio and we also had some nice pro sound gear which served as the foundation for my interest in audio. I have a very modest system and a tight budget, but I really enjoy hearing the quality systems of the group members. I have a rather eclectic mix of gear and in listening to other group member systems I hope to refine my interests and expectations in what the next stage of my system should be. Look forward to meeting you all sometime soon.

JL Audio 12W0v2-4 sub
Zapco i-Force i-2100 amp (x2)

Headphones
Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10's, in custom molds

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX
So I am thinking the next step would be a dedicated 2.1 setup for intimate listening sessions. The Klipsch are a bit bright and can be fatiguing so I'm looking for a warmer sound and a nice tube amp, and possibly getting into vinyl. Talk soon all, take care.

Sorry, we're not accepting any more applications :nono:

I, on the other hand, accept your "application" and allow you in the group.

Ha! I was actually discussing Vapor Audio at work the other day with Sturgus, I must say I was very impressed with what I have seen so far on the Vapor Audio website, impressive specs and beautiful cabinets! He mentioned there may be a listening session coming up for these, would be great to hear them in person.

Hello, I just joined audiocircle and came across you guys and gals. I live in Columbia, IL. Just across the river from the J.B. bridge.

Welcome! :thumb:
-
So I know I missed the vinyl crawl. That would have been so up my alley. What's the next big event?
-
Jibzilla,
The next scheduled event is in August and is this http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=124857.msg1316140#msg1316140 (http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=124857.msg1316140#msg1316140). It isn't a conventional get together though, more of a flea market.
Some time I need to host a get together as I have been remiss during my membership here. However, I think I need to rebuild the back panel of my cute little speakers, finish rewiring them, balance the crossovers, and get the super tweeters functional so people won't be disappointed by muddy bass or lack of highs.
Ken
-
Thank you. I just finished with my dj and hi-fi setup so there are lots of gear I would like to sell.
-
Hi,
I finally got around to joining.
I've been around the St. Louis audio scene for a while. I know several members already: Chris Hoff, John Doris, Ryan Scott, Tim Simpson, and Mike Missell. I've met several of you at Ryan's get togethers.
I probably met many of you when I worked at Audio Musicale in Belleville, IL and Dixon Smart and Randy Myers were the owners. There I worked with Gerry LeMay, Wayne Munie, and one of my best friends, Tim Malick. We sold such brands as ARC, Magnepan, Acoustat, Sumiko, Audioquest, SOTA, Dynavector, Conrad Johnson, and Snell. It was there I grew to know such audiophiles Adam Casmere, Gene Vassollo, and Loyd Smith.
Of course while working at Audio Musicale I couldn't resist building my own stereo system and you know wants you get the bug . . .
Over the years I've acquired and still own some of the following gear.
Legacy Audio: Helix, Focus SE
SOTA: Sapphire
Sumiko: FT3
ARC: SP3 1A, REF 3
TRL: The DUDE
PS Audio: PWD 2, Direct Stream, P-10, PWT, other assorted stuff. I'm a PS Audio Beta tester.
PurePower 2000 & 3000 +
SolidSteel Racks
Magnepan MG3s
Acoustat: Model 4s, TNT 200, TNP
CODA: CSX, CS, CP
Audio PC w/ LPSU, jRiver, jPlay, Windows Server 2012, AudiophileOptimizer
Server with 8TB music files including 3TB DSD
Cables by : Signal Cable, VH Audio, TRL, Running Springs, PS Audio, Clarus Crimson
Lampizator: Level 5, Big 7, USB Transport
You might have read my review of Lampizator products called, Living with Lampis published in Computer Audiophile
Here's the link:
http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/611-living-lampis/
I've been a contributing member of Audiogon, Audio Asylum, AudioCircle, Computer Audiophile, the PS Audio Forum, and probably others I can't remember right now.
I'd be glad to visit and hear your systems. I'm always ready to hear something new.
PM me or email me at sgrowan@charter.net if you'd like to talk or visit.
Other hobbies include but are not limited to: fishing on the Mississippi and the Gulf, reading, cycling, cinema, probably others I can't think of.
Thanks,
Steven Rowan

Sorry see above.

Welcome Steven!
Impressive resume, indeed.

Hi. My name is Dave. I found about the group from Bob and Sturgus when searching for some new records on Record Store Day. Looking forward to joining the group and learning more from all of you.
-
Welcome Dave!
-
Dave, glad you found your way here. Welcome :thumb:
-
Greetings. New member El Cavano here.
Just getting my feet wet on this forum, but I'm really happy I found it (or it found me). Particularly interested in local gatherings.
Kind of new to the sport, but very much interested in 70's vintage equipment. Completely consumed with the hunt for equipment lately.
Currently, I'm running:
Technics SL-D303 TT
Pioneer SX-737
Canton Plus S
Sound Dynamics 300Ti
TEAC CD player
I've got my eye out for a decent vintage receiver, with strong style points, to run those Sound Dynamics 300Ti. Probabaly 50wpc or more.
Thanks!
LC
-
Welcome to the club!
Plenty of vintage fellas in STL, so you should fit right in.
Bob
.....sorry it took me so long to approve your post
-
Thanks Bob, I appreciate it.
Once I get the lay of the land here in the GAS forum, I will likely continue my search for a vintage receiver. Any suggestions would be welcome. There are a few details about my search in my initial post above.
Thanks,
LC

Damn right! We're ALL vintage in GAS! :thumb:
-
Well....there are a couple good lookin' young-uns around here. 8)
-
Safe to assume you guys are "occassionally" watching CL in STL? I'm completely hooked.
-
CL? Yep! Interesting stuff pops up there from time-to-time. You just missed last week's Audio Jumble, where we sell all our excess audio crap to each other. And buy it back the next year.
-
Actually, it was postponed until September:
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=134573.0
That should give you ("us") more time to buy more ol junk and sell it then.
-
COOL! I didn't realize it had been pushed back! :thumb:
-
Hi!
I was looking for an audio club in saint louis, and almost gave up looking!
Glad I found GAS.
Can you guys bring me up to speed and let me know when the next group event is?
Anything in August?
Thanks,
Kyle
-
Welcome Kyle! :thumb:
Not sure to be honest. We rarely have get-to-gethers these days. Seems like the hardest part is scheduling conflicts.
Bob
-
Do we have a date yet for the Sept Audio Jumble?
Sept 1 - 7 works great for me. After that, I will be on vacation and unable to meet you fine folks.
Last question for the troops here: Do we have a local member in the group that services vintage gear from the 70s and 80s? I know about the local shops in town, but they can charge a first born.
Kyle

Yip, check out Mike at mjm in >> this list << (http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=77668.0) (the thread is a 'sticky' on the main GAS page).

Thank you Bob for the referral.
Hi Kyle, welcome to GAS.
I am the technician for most of the GAS members. :thumb:
Give me a call sometime. 8)
-
Excellent, will do.
In the past, where have we held the audio jumbles?
Someplace with decent space I imagine.
-
Yip, any house will do. Some are small some are big. If you don't want a bunch of folks, you can say "I only have room for a couple, so the first ones to reply are in". You can make it a BYOB, or you can bust out a fully catered shindig complete with open bar and invite the entire forum. Your house, your rules.
Roughly, what area of STL are you in?
Bob
-
Bob hosts a regular get-together at his place.
His rules? Only one guest.
Works out well for both sides, as he's a little anti-social...

Hello all,
My name is John and I am an audiophiliac.
At least that is my self-diagnosis and after a few very welcoming exchanges with Bob, I've decided to come out to the group. I'm another one from Belleville, and as I've told Bob I don't get out nearly enough. I would very much like to meet the guys in the group, and as I have some equipment in the works right now, I would love to be in a position to host come spring.
I've already learned an incredible amount from the AC boards, and I am trying to give back in the form of reviews and comments I've made on stuff I have had, and especially on stuff that is on its way. I should have a lot to say on the Digital Audio Company and GR Research boards soon, which will represent some great experiences with the respective designers. Other than that, I am afraid that my technical skills are limited, although I try to listen with clean ears :).
Thanks again Bob, for the invitation, and I hope to take part in something GAS related sometime in the near future.
John
-
Hi John. Some of us are record shopping on Feb 6th if you're free. I'll post info as soon as I get all the details right. Should include Euclids and Vintage Vinyl. Watch the circle for info. Thanks for joining us.
-
Thanks for the invitation! I'll keep an eye on the board....

You're very welcome John, and thank you for posting. Looking forward to shaking your hand someday, soon. :thumb:

p.s. Be careful throwing that name "Bob" around, there are a few of us here and some of us are....well.....You'll find out.

Hello,
New user here. I'm out in far west county. My primary system is Khorns powered by Christensen Modulus-86 & Christensen preamp. I'm working on a Pass Aleph-J, we'll see how that works out in the next few months.
Glad to be here!
-
Nice to have you here. I would be interested in knowing more about the amplification you are using. I think there is quite a bit of interest in low power/high efficiency systems within GAS. I am sure other members will be commenting as well. I am in the Creve Coeur area and listening with high power and no tubes at the present. You are always welcome to come by and do some listening. Give me a shout if you have some time. Best, Kent Johnson
-
Welcome, sounds like you need a couple of SET amps. Hmmmm.

Welcome! :thumb:

Hi Kent, thanks for the welcome. The Modulus-86 is a design by Tom Christiansen of http://www.neurochrome.com (http://www.neurochrome.com). It is based on the LM3886.
You probably already know about the Pass Aleph-J, I haven't heard it yet because I'm still collecting parts. Thanks for the listen offer, I may take you up on that sometime.
-
Welcome, sounds like you need a couple of SET amps. Hmmmm.
Yep, I've thought about that.
-
Welcome aboard!
If you ever decide to take the SET plunge, I've got a pair of Welborne 300B DRDs for sale. Won't find a finer sounding SET on the market.

Scott,
Can you give me a call to discuss the preamp you still have available?
Thx

Don, I'll give you a buzz tomorrow evening.

Welcome to group! I'm not so far west in west county (I-270 & Manchester). My system needs to be reconnected after the room rearrangement, but is based on Bozaks and 6550s.

Hi everyone.
I live at the other end of the state in Joplin, but have STL roots.
I graduated from Washington University
and I am a diehard Cardinals fan. I make my way to STL for several games a summer.
I am looking to start a new system in my office.
At this point I am drawn to Omega speakers powered by a SET amp from Decware.
My front end is a Basis TT and a RB300 I just had rewired.
-
CWC, make it to St. Louis, and we can send you home with an office system :-) Welcome to GAS!
-
Be sure to let us know when you're headed up for a game. I'm sure we can get some listening time in before you head downtown for the Cards.
Mark

Welcome aboard :thumb:. When you're headed this way just let us know so we can roll out the welcome mat.

Hey guys, new to the community from Springfield, MO. I like headphones and Marantz, Yamaha, Wharfedale and Monitor Audio gear. I'm working on getting some Adam A7x or A77x powered speakers. Usually I go to Kansas City for concerts, but sometimes St. Louis, depending.
-
Welcome! I'm in Springfield for a few days right now. Based in Rolla.
-
Hello All,
My name is Justin and I'm glad to be here. I'm 30 years old and live in St. Charles, Mo. I've been into Hifi for about 6 years now and have had a lot go through my system in that time. My current setup is listed below. I'm very much into the DIY stuff and am close to finishing my next system. Looking forward to possibly having some meetups in the future and listening to others sound.
Stereo:
Corner loaded Radian 5215Be's
PS Audio Direct Stream Junior (Roon Endpoint)
PS Audio BHK Signature Preamplifier (ordered)
Hypex Ncore NC400 Mono Block Amplifiers
I plan to go active on the crossovers this year after taxes :) I want to order some Marchand XO's and then Bi-amp the Hi/Low. Looking at going with a 300b for the highs but costs may be prohibitive. I'm normally a horn guy but wanted to try the Coaxials out and haven't been let down yet. One day i want to build a Klipsch Jubilee set with the K-402 and Jub bass cabinet. That is the dream. Look forward to talking and discussing with everyone.

Hi everyone. My name is Christian and I’ve been into audio for about two years now. Most of my gear so far has been high powered solid state receivers from the 1970s and, while they look really cool, I have recently acquired some Klipsch speakers so will probably start dabbling into lower powered pieces soon. I’ve met a few of you all around town the past few years, including Dave today, and look forward to meeting others.
-
Glad you've joined us as GAS. And watch out for Dave; he'll have you spending your money way too fast.
-
Welcome! :thumb:
-
Thanks for the welcome messages. Funny you mention about Dave and spending on audio equipment as I bought a pair of speakers from him yesterday and will probably be back soon to buy something that will drive them better than my current setup. :)
-
Welcome Justin and Christian! As Mark noted, I like folks looking for tube amps.
-
Welcome to the madness :green: Oh yeah, stay away from that Dave guy.

Hello everyone,
I retired on March 31 and moved to Columbia in April. After a fairly major remodeling project, I'm finally getting settled in my new to me house and have the audio system up and running. I'm still fine tuning the speaker location and I need to look into some room treatments.
I'm interested in participating in any events you have. I also want to taste some of Bob in St. Louis' famous BBQ that I have observed in the culinary circle.
If you are headed this way let me know.

Yes my Mom still lives on the southwest side of town. I’m in town this weekend for a Mizzou band reunion.
Let me know if you’d like a vinyl shopping trip to St. Louis. There’s also a fun shop In Jefferson City too.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to say hello. I am located in Central Illinois, but St. Louis isn't really that far away. I've been interested in this hobby since the first "real" system I heard 30 years ago. I lean more towards a digital front end, as I am a child of the age of the CD. I also currently run Odyssey Audio amplifiers and Harbeth speakers. I look forward to interacting with you all. Thanks!

Welcome to the GAS group. Thanks for seeking us out. Kent Johnson

Although I am not in the area anymore you will find that St Louis has some of the finest audiophiles around....they are a knowledgeable and diversified group and just good people that will offer and help with questions and best of all guys and gals to hang out with to listen to tunes and talk all things Audio.

Hello, I am currently running the Harbeth Super HL5. I upgraded to this model after having owned the P3ESR for a few years. Prior to hearing and using the Harbeth's, I ran home built speakers for years.

I look forward to contributing and hope to meet some of you at the GAS events.

Welcome aboard, :D
I for one have always wanted to hear the LXs. At Axpona they only had the next one down.
Be sure and come to our Saturday January 11 meeting where you can hear Don Bingaman's latest creation designed by Linkwitz pal Nelson Pass.
I have been a fan of Sigfried and his work since his important JAES article in about 1976.

Good evening and thanks for the great dialog -- been reading up (2004 and on...). Moved to St. Louis yesterday (literally) and spent the day walking around the downtown... beautiful. I stumbled upon GAS while looking for local HiFi retailers and hope to contribute when I'm qualified to do so...
All the best,
Chris

Good afternoon,
I am new to this site. I was referred to it by Mike Missel about four years ago but have not joined until now. Mike repaired my VPI HW-19 MK4 turntable. I am looking forward to interacting with the members.

Welcome, Clem. We've gone virtual at the moment, and things are kinda slow, but you'll find a lot of friendly people here.

Thank you Debbie. I would like to get some feedback from the group on a cartridge for my turntable. Can you tell me what would be the appropriate way to do that please?

We're really informal. Just start a new thread and ask. :)

Hello All!
My name is Winston and I just joined audiocircle. I have recently become interested in audio equipment and restoration due to the extra time on my hands during the pandemic. I started by recapping and restoring an old SS zenith console unit, and have moved on from there to restoring tube amps and turntables, whatever I can get my hands on for a reasonable price. I'll say it is not easy to be the first one to a good deal in St. Louis!
My current project is the restoration of a fisher console unit (Philharmonic II with the P-22 amp) which has been really just a treat to work on. I will post pictures of that soon!
Glad to see that there is an audio community in St. Louis!

Greetings from an old new member! I joined two years ago and then got waylaid by the pandemic. I began working from home two years ago today and wound up working more hours from home than I ever did at my office.
That left little time for fun stuff like enjoying my system and albums.
I bought the framework of my system from Hi-Fi Fo-Fum in 1976. In the early '80s, I upgraded my Dual turntable to a Denon. I later added an NAD CD player. In the early 2000s, my wife and I plunged into home theater with a Denon receiver, Sony DVD player and later a Sony BD player and Klipsch Reference speakers.
I get more use and enjoyment out of my stereo system than I do out the home theater set up.
Now one of my New Larger Advent speakers is sounding a little weak. I'm trying to determine if it's the tweeter or the crossover.
Happy listening and collecting!

Hello Everyone,
I am Soaring Bear and brand new to GAS. I made some inexpensive upgrades to my system which have increased my enjoyment. I replaced my B&K Components preamp and amp with Emotiva. Coloration disappeared and bass tightened up. I have an old Panasonic CD/DVD that I run through an Emotiva Stealth DAC.
I have auditioned some speakers but keep coming back to my inexpensive 2-ways and thinking that they sound better overall. This has surprised me because some of these speakers were over $5-6K. My speakers are Dahlquist 2-way bookshelf speakers from late 1980s with VIFA dome tweeters.
My speaker wires are copper clad in silver with a single twist that I bought through Mapleshade. My speakers had never imaged before these speakers. The change was astounding.
My interconnect are single strand sterling silver 30 ga wire in teflon tubes without any shielding. I know, I know. It goes against the current trend, but they sound good to me.
I enjoy a lot of different types of music. Lately, I notice that live recordings, especially acoustic ones, are giving me the most pleasure.
That's my story. My system isn't expensive, but sounds so good to me.

Hello All,
Introducing myself. I am relatively new to both 2 channel and HT but have gradually been building my setup. Found AudioCircle and happy to find everyone here in STL.
