I've visited all these sites (and downloaded from about 10 of them), but for brevity sake I cut-and-pasted from Weiss Digital's link page on their website (DAC mfg'er). Then i added a couple (incl Cookie Marenco's great BlueCoast Records).
-
Please note the qualifier on the above list, "uncompressed or hi rez" Not to be critical but DGM live for example will not have any hi rez audio.
simplest place for 24/48 and 24/96 files would be archive.org. there is actually a specific search function to locate 24 bit recordings. Depends on the sort of music you like but I am a Dead Head (Hello, my name is John, and I am a Dead Head) and you can find lots of simply outstanding live recordings of Bob Weir and Ratdog (I recommend the one from the Stir in 2007 with Steve Kimock and Jamaica from this January), Phil Lesh and Friends (any of the ones recorded during summer tour outdoors) and Steve Kimock (the 24 bit stage recordings are amazing!)
You can also check out digitalsoundboard.net for some 24 bit recordings you can purchase as flac files.
Just BTW, I don't store these on a hard drive because the file sizes are so large. I use DVD-Audio Creator, and nice program for like 30 bucks that will burn these onto a DVD that can be played with just about any DVD player.
Enjoy!

Don't forget archive.org. Lots of great stuff out there, all free.
This URL will search their site for 24bit recordings:

Lee, I agree. "Freddie" is an incredible performance and I have it both on 24/192 and 24/96. David (Rydenfan) pulled the trigger on the disc and will get it soon.

musicgiants is out of business (for the moment, at least). As I understand the story, one of its angel investors pulled out. The company's investor-base was poorly diversified, making ongoing operations impossible, once this investor pulled funding. They were/are attempting to restructure under Chapter 11, but given that they filed a year ago, I'm guessing things haven't gone well.

Yes, Music Giants has been gone for a year now. We were hoping at that time that it wasn't a portend of things to come. Luckily, most other sites have been doing ok I guess.

Did you see its spectrum?
Looks like plain upsampling..

ted,
I heard a piece done by the Boston Symphony Chamber Orchestra, and started checking on how to buy it. This led me to their home site. I didn't like that they were selling the digital stream only in WMA format. I went ahead and bought the sacd, used off of Amazon, but started to wonder, which hi-rez service offers the best bang for the buck? And with other formats besides WMA. I'm not talking about Apple or PC. PC here. I'm talking about FLAC, Ogg-Vorbis, and so on. Boston offers a yearly fee, and I was tempted, as it would have only cost a little more than this CD, but I was afraid it would not have included the selection I wanted.

By the way, Ted mentioned I would have received the album I wanted, plus 11 MORE, if I had subscribed for one month.
In my best Homer Simpson mode: Du-OH! :duh: :duh:

Found this - http://www.georgeharrison.com/#/store/uk/detail/6223 - ie. "all things must pass" (2010, in 24/96). There is a US store. Good thing is sq - apparently a cut above the 2001 cd release which I know is dyn comp. See http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/index.php?search_artist=&search_album=all+things+must+pass

It would be really great if the facilitator could start a new sticky thread and maintain the list in the very first post.

http://bluecoastrecords.com/
The Blue Coast Collection is excellent. They sell DSD fies too.
-
Skunark, I will attempt to go back and edit this list from time to time (already have several times) but most of what is being brought up (i.e the latest post about Cookie's wonderful Blue Coast Records) I've already put on there.
-
There's also eClassical.com. It's notable for having a very large number of BIS titles, mostly in 24/44, which have not previously been available in any hi-rez format. They also offer discounts on selected new releases and currently run a daily "special" where a random title (sometimes but not always hi-rez) is available for half off.

Does anybody know how to download and import the meta data at archive.org? It's awful tedious to rename each file individually. I've posted a question in their forum but I can't get an answer. There must be an easier way to rename the flac files. By the way, has anyone tried this software in conjunction with the Internet Archive site. I read somewhere that it was useful.
Thanks,
Mike

If what you want to do is rename, add or edit tags then this program works geat:
http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm
You ca rename files based on tags, reate tags based on file names...and more.

Thanks for the response but I need some more dots. When I down load a concert from archive.org such as
https://ia701505.us.archive.org/19/items/ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit/ the filenames typically follow this format:
ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit.01.flac
Also on the page will be a group of files that refer to texts and meta data:
ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit.ffp 27-Oct-2012 18:07 781
ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit.info.txt 29-Oct-2012 14:17 2231
ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit.md5 27-Oct-2012 18:07 886
ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit_archive.torrent 29-Oct-2012 19:14 28001
ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit_files.xml 29-Oct-2012 19:14 5423
ch2011-12-12.EarlyShow.24bit_meta.xml 29-Oct-2012 19:14 2471
It seems that the information is all there but I don't know how to utilize to tag the files rather than renaming them one by one. What am I missing?

Techies, I have a question:
I tried to download the HDtracks sampler today. What a pain. I just got my Bryston BDP2 digital player and BDA D/A converter and was looking forward to a pleasant experience purchasing and listening to high-res tracks.
Files either failed to download or downloaded without cover art. HDtracks support has reset the download permission for me twice, but the same problems occur. I have a very speedy internet connection and a recent i7 iMac. I had no problem downloading sampler files from Naim and other sites.
Is this a typical problem?
I've read of the file resolution problems with HDtracks, and it seems to me that, in addition to this, the site design and operations are egregious. Their CS is grudgingly helpful at best.
I would think that my profile would fit well with HDtracks' customer goals, but if my experience today is typical there's no way I want to support this enterprise. I look forward to your comments and recommendations.
Cheerio,
Rich

Ever since they built the new downloader, I've had no problems with either the downloads or the speed. Have you tried using a different computer just to make sure the problem isn't somehow based on a single machine?

Good point, firedog. I have also tried with my MacBook Pro: same result. It seems odd that the audio file but not the cover art would download.
Has HDtracks' customer service been responsive in your experience?

IME they are responsive but very slow, perhaps taking several days to respond in worst case!

I've experienced reasonable customer service like not always next day but after two days sometimes.
Are you sure there is no artwork showing when you play the music files as I found that image files are no longer in the music files but the artwork still shows when I play the music. I'm using an iPad and two iPods to control my music on my BDP-1 and despite no image files in the music files the artwork magically appears when I play the music.
In the old days I had to rename the image file "Folder" but now I don't need to do anything so I guess somehow the artwork is embedded in the track files.
I'm not a techie so I can't do more than tell you what I have found.
Cheers

My experience indicates that downloads from HDTracks do not contain a JPG file only a PDF file which may or may not contain more than cover art. In order to get cover art to display when playing an album I have to insert a JPG file in each folder (This is for my Invicta DAC). YMMV

I have had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Steve Hoffman, the great mastering engineer. Well Steve...along with his partner in Analogue Productions analog-to-DSD remasters, Kevin Gray, have been working with Chad Kassem's money, influence and vision to create the Analogue Productions label, and a wealth of wonderful jazz DSD reissues on SACD.
Today they have released 26 of these titles on Chad's Acoustic Sounds sister website Super HiRez, for DSD downloads! And they cost less than the SACD (I am not sure what they are going to do for the 3 channel work they did on Nat King Cole, for example). Anyway, thanks Chad!!
http://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?store=SuperHiRez
Articles claim they have worked a deal with Universal for 40 more titles, too. :)

Nice to see some for $25. I really like Cookie's work but at $50 each, it's not happening for me.
-
I bought The Hot Spot soundtrack a little while ago from Acoustic Sounds, DSD64 version. Seems very nice on my work desktop Teac UD-501/Slagelformer AVC/Mackie MR5.
Agree on Cookie's stuff, I've bought a few but they all been when there was a discount, pricey but excellent.
-
Mike, you bought the download or the SACD? If download, how does it come..DSF or DFF?

Download, DSF and with decent tagging and images. The only change I made was to add the track number.

Nice! I am helping Jared Sacks and Channel Classics get their whole catalog (stereo and multichannel) to DSF for a new sister DSD download. I am doing the tags. Tom (tailspn) is doing the rendering, etc. I love that folks are embracing DSF and its metadata. :)
-
I am hoping that now that there is competition from 2 big on line stores for hi res downloads the prices will start to fall. $25 is way too high given that there is no physical product.
-
Good point, and then you to have at least one back-up copy on another HD or a NAS System...

Hello everyone, interesting thread! :)
One of my favorite download site for lossless audio (also 24bit) is: http://bandcamp.com/search?q=24bit&from=corphome

A good selection of 24-bit (varying kHz) and most of the Chandos SACD catalogue in hirez surround. Prices are, as usual, not great. But the music is!

I think the Sound Liaison label should be mentioned here.
Very small selection but very good music and absolutely stunning audio quality.
These guys really know how to capture audio.
There are some free samples to be had on the site; http://www.soundliaison.com/ (http://www.soundliaison.com/)
or you could start of with this one, highly recommended;

After Silence was recorded with the musicians playing together in the same room, without headphones. The reason being that in our opinion that creates a number of musical and technical benefits....... The musicians interact much more as they would do in a concert situation...and as they are not ''separated'' by headphones the musicians are forced to create a musical balance...the need for compression to control levels is no longer necessary...we can use a minimalist microphone setup and there by reduce phase problems...since everybody is in the same room, the boxed sound which is so common in many modern recordings is absent...the sound of the room helps ''glue'' the sound of the recording. That sounds like an easy solution but bear in mind that in order for this to work:e studio has to have a good sound.....the musicians have to be very good and well prepared as it is very difficult to repair mistakes because of the ''cross talk'' between the instruments....we have to be very precise when choosing and placingthe microphones...and the puzzle of placing the musicians at the right distance to the main stereo microphone pair and at the right distance to each other is very time consuming.

Thank you for this thread!!! Love it!

Anyone having trouble with HDTracks?
I've been using HDtracks for about year or so. I upgraded my MAC the latest OS (Yosemite) and now HDtracks Download Manager crashes as soon as I try to open it. I wrote to HDtracks and their answer was to refund my money. I am stuck now... i need some new music, but I don't want to buy physical CDs anymore...no more room to store them.
