Melbourne Vintage Amplifiers
« on: 9 Dec 2009, 04:15 am »
Hey fellow ACers,

I live in Melbourne and am thinking of getting a new amplifier. Something with all the bells and whistles is not needed. The amplifier will be used in the reading room which is actually only a little bit larger than a walk in robe

Does anyone know of a place other than eBay where I can look around and find something of HiFi standard like Pioneer or Technics amps, test it out and buy on the spot?

Thanks guys

Hi A,

you could have a chat to Hugh Dean, who's amps feature here on AC [Aspen Amplifiers]. Depending on what you want to spend Hugh usually has quite a range of options and he's always incredibly helpful.

Other than that, depends on what part of Melbourne you live in maybe.

Hi Jules,

Well I definitely look into that. I live in the South East Suburbs around Clayton but I don't mind driving a little to find that treasure so anything around or past the city is also ok for me.

Cheers,

Are you specifically looking to start into vintage equipment or just looking for something cheap? If the former I personally would suggest going back a little further in time; if the latter I would suggest the low-cost tripath amps (not that I actually have one myself but I would get one in the situation you describe)

Hi JohnR,

As I said before the system will be for the reading room so I'm not looking for anything expensive. HiFi equipment is suitable though not necessarily audiophile. Technics or Pioneer will suffice.

Thanks

If you really want vintage, then this guy from Melbourne has lots of good ones. The ebay contact is the only one I have and have bought from him. Vintage can come with baggage however and lot of the time they need some work like new capacitors and potentiometers.

If you just want cheap then these or similar do well but are only single source.

If you want cheap and need extra sources plus FM then the Onkyo R-805XS from Eastwood HiFi are good value at $249 (at the bottom of the page).

All those can satisfy and are not disgraced even though I have AKSA, NXV200, ChipAmps etc in my possession.

Other than that a mini system.
