Great (Pre)Black Friday / Holiday deals
« on: 20 Nov 2017, 07:02 pm »
I know there's a separate circle for this, but if you're like me you rarely look at that one.

Amazon currently has:

Q Acoustics 3020 in graphite for $249

ELAC B6 for $199 (graphite or walnut)

ELAC UB5 for $349 (graphite or walnut)

Let us know about any other C&C audio deals you find in the coming weeks!

Yeah, there's a Sweet Deals circle this would normally go in, but it's all C&C stuff so it can stay here.

Monoprice has their 12" powered subwoofer for $80
https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=109&cp_id=10906&cs_id=1090602&p_id=9723&seq=1&format=2 Note that Monoprice doesn't do free shipping, but it's still a hell of a deal.

I haven't heard it yet but Wirecutter picked it as their favorite budget subwoofer

Also, it looks like Best Buy has the same pricing as Amazon on the Elac B6 and UB5, if you prefer to support a brick & mortar store https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=elac&_dyncharset=UTF-8&id=pcat17071&type=page&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=&sp=&qp=&list=n&af=true&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys

KEF Q700s on KEF Direct for $1,000 a pair! Sick deal, wish I was ready for some towers, I'd get 'em in white. Tomorrow they might actually get cheaper, looks like.

Anyone know Frys.com return policy? They have a sweet deal on a Yamaha TSR-5810 on Thanksgiving Day for $199 but I could not find anything on their website that speaks to who is responsible for shipping charges if the unit is defective.

All I could find is this which to me means if they ship a defective unit the purchaser is on the hook for shipping charges in both directions. Or is a defective unit a Frys.com error?

For returns not the result of a Frys.com error, original and return shipping charges are the sole responsibility of the customer.

About KEF.

I have KEF Q100 in my second system from June 2013, with computer. The speakers suspension is very rigid so new ones have very little bass and they sound bad. They need a very long burning.

Many Amazon.com customers have not had the patience for a minimum burning before returning them.

Again, news sound bad, very bad.

With my cheap tweaks they sound much better.

The KEF Q300 6.5" coaxial does not have the magic of the 5.25" of Q100, R100 or LS50.

I would not buy the Q500 and Q700. Maybe the Q900. They uses very simple filters that do not properly integrate so many speakers!

It is better idea KEF Q100 with one or two subwoofer than Q500, Q700 or Q900.

PS: subwoofer(s) with that allow to regulate the phase and not only to switch between 0º and 180º.

Like many of Canton subwoofer.

ELAC UB5 bookshelf has a "little" problem:

Now for the down side. As soon as you try to really play music the speaker becomes a shout box. When turning them up past 92dB (measured near field) the speaker loses control, and starts sounding more like a PA system than HiFi audio.

Here is the rub of this limitation. Normally 2-way speakers will fall apart in the lower midrange when pushed, it's one of the big reasons for moving to a 3-way speaker. With this output limitation there is honestly no good reason for this speaker to be a 3 way design...

Final thoughts:

I asked ELAC why the speaker shits the bed is such a unique way at 92dB, and did not get a response. My instinct here is that this limitation is because of driver design, maybe not enough magnet or copper on the midrange. I requested rear photos of the coaxial driver, but did not get them from ELAC. I only have the limited knowledge of an obsessed hobbyist, but I don't think a crossover component would create this issue. As such, I don't think the all active DSP version of the UB5 that ELAC has planned for future release will solve this problem. If anyone out there has a better idea of what is going on with the speaker let me know.

Back to the story of Daedalus and Icarus. Icarus's wings were amazing in design, but limited. If only he would not have flown so close to the sun, the story would have a happy ending. The ELAC UB5 speakers are technical marvels, that Jones and the team at ELAC should be proud of, but will perform well as long as you don't turn them up too much.

PS: in others forums I have been tracking speakers, amplifiers, dacs... for years. I am aware of limitations and excellences.

Dude, stop spamming the thread. It's about Black Friday deals, not compulsive complaints about said deals. Why don't you start a new thread. I would genuinely like to know more about the internals of these speakers, but this isn't the thread for that.

I am not spamming. I am warning of the limitations of the recommended products. We not only have to take into account the price and blind ourselves in the purchase today or another day.

Compulsive shopping must be avoided I think.
