Another option is the cheap but apparently good subs designed by Ed Schilling to utilize plastic buckets. The biggest challenge might be making them living room friendly, aesthetically:

Ed is certainly an intelligent fellow. Looks like an interesting design, but like you say... there's a certain lack of WAF when you've got buckets scattered around the room.

A 'certain lack of WAF', for sure. I think it would be a pretty extreme exercise in camouflage.

Speaking of camouflage, I was recently reminded of dazzle camouflage, a first world war concept. It could work, although it would require some radical re-decorating!
