The original WE300B were far from linear and sound different from the current crop of 300B tubes, it had no treble and no bass, it had just midrange.

I have never see a transformer spike like this,
what would be the cause of this?

(The Manufacturer site say grounded secondary)

I am sure that it was the test conditions or equipment.  You would need a spectrum analyzer to see what was going on, but no transformer I know of can can just spike like that.  It defies the laws of physics for the transformer to do it alone.

I am affraid some transformers do have those spikes. See also: http://www.sacthailand.com/Transformer_OutputTestGraph.html
You see there are more transformers with such behaviour.
1628SE is a Hammond OPT not SAC,
it have a big 5kg core 30W too bad.

However its only 4dB and they use M6 and accept custom orders.
What is the cause of this?
What is the sound effect?

A 5kg transformer with EI core is just a small transformer for a good 300B amplifier, a C-core has at least 50% more efficiency with the same core dimensions (weight) not to mention m6 is nowadays not a good quality, we need at least m1 or better (HiB, M0)
It's not only a 4 db dip but also the phase response is bad.
Hm very instructive, this caused by what?
Bad winding?

yes, it has all to do with winding technique.
btw you can see that almost all Monolith Magnetics have a very sharp cut of frequency response, even more then 12dB/oct.
It's nice to see that they have high frequency bandwidth but i guess the phase response is pretty bad.
The Hammond 1628SE OPT showed in that site is a old model no more in production, the current model is the 1628SEA, I dont know how perform the new model.

When I think of an SET amp, I think of the 300B tube but I'm seeing manufacturers using EL34s, Kt150, Kt120s, KT88s you name it.

Assuming that the 300B is still king, what tube comes closest?

Any personal experiences here?
