New speaker naming contest...Win a pair of Micros!
« on: 27 Jun 2003, 03:42 am »
Here's an opportunity to win a free pair of RAD Micros!

I'm in the process of developing a new tower speaker and am not very good at coming up with names.  So I thought I'd start a contest and give away a pair of Micros to the person who comes up with the winning name.

Here are the particulars about the speakers.  The cabinets are 44"H x 6.5"W x 14.5"D.  There are 9 of the Tang Band W3-871S drivers which are all the rage right now along with a prototype of a new GR Research high efficiency silk dome tweeter.  There are four 2" ports in the back of the cabinet and they should have an F3 around 65Hz.  Due to the multiple drivers and the high efficiency tweeter it doesn't take much power for them to get loud.  Crossover design is still in the works but I hope to have that done in the next 3-4 weeks.  These particular cabinets are wrapped in oak veneer, stained with a Minwax Antique Red stain, and finished with gloss polyurethane.

So here are the particulars for the contest.  To enter, simply post your entry in this thread, as well as sending an email titled "RAD Contest" with your entry to brian@rutledgeaudiodesign.com.  Feel free to enter as often as you like.  The deadline for entering is July 15th at midnight EDT.

Also, feel free to ask any questions you may have about the new speakers within this thread.  I'm also considering a center channel with the same drivers for those that want to use these in a HT setup and the Micros make excellent surrounds.

OK, so let the games begin! :)

My vote is 'Radiant'.  It continues the 'RAD' name, but is more elegant and gives the impression of sound radiating from the speakers.

BTW: The certainly look interesting.  Any idea on the price range?

How 'bout the Infinitum?  It matches the seemingly endless number of drivers, implies some level of infinitely good sound, and also sounds real Latiny.

I like Brad's idea of Radiant, but here is my idea...

Radiators

Was curious about the effects of comb filtering and how you got around it.

Brad,

The projected price will be around $850/pr. depending on the finish.  With something like this stain the price would go up as there's so much more work involved.

Josh,

With a low enough XO point comb filtering isn't an issue.

I understand the additional cost/work.  I'm currently working on my custom finish pair of Ascends and it's turning out to be a lot of work - more than I expected, but I'm enjoying it so far.

Okay, here goes:

1.  The Perfect 10's.  (a fine magazine...) Plus they have 10 drivers...
2.  Symphony (big sound...).
3.  The RAD Miles (after Miles Davis...).
4.  Everest
5.  RAD Matrix
6.  Neons
7.  Electraglides (big and sleek like the bike)
9.  Magnums (after my preferred brand of ...)
10.  RAD Masters
11.  RAD TRT's (Transparent Reference Transducers)
12.  RAD Macro's (opposite of Micro!) :)

That's all I got...

Jackman,

#11 sounds like something our friend, Mr. Greenberg, would have come up with! :)

Who is Greenberg?   :?

I was trying to combine some terms I have stumbled across (literally) and thought "Transparent " would work well for speakers.  "Reference" is used a lot but it sounds cool and "Transducers" is a nice confusing word for speakers.  The letters TRT seem to flow nicely.  Plus, I really want those micros and was really racking my brain!

Brian, these look very cool.

Being a gear head, I like:

Inline Nine
(or Inline 9)

Sounds like a screaming motor. small bore, short stroke, should be good for around 15,000 rpms! :)

Jackman,

I was thinking you lived in Chicago and knew my buddy, Randy (aka "theranman").

Randog,

Thanks, I think they're kinda cool myself!:)

I was going to come back and post 'radical', but the thread has taken off and KKM proposed that long ago.  I'll second 'radical', but as the name for the center channel.  :)

You've got a ton of ideas already - seems like the contest was a good idea.

Randog: I like your Inline 9 one.

Thanks! :)

I also like:

Nine-eyes

-and-

The Lamprey

(lampreys are eel-like fish who were once referred to as 'nine-eyes' because they have holes in-line behind their two eyes that make them appear like they have nine)  8)
