I saw the dimpled "Dynaribbon" mid range panels in Super Tower/R, but the image above is the first I can recall seeing the Dynaribbon in the Tower II.

That "$20k" price mentioned above for ST III is just nuts.  They were only about $4k maximum.

I remember posting another ad, for a Dynapleat Tower II like these, and that model was described as a "30TH Anniversary Special Edition" version.  Does that sound familiar?

Yea, some of these 'supposed' List Prices' are insane.  I wish Brian was still here to rebut those!

Very good Stimpy!  Yes, now I recall, the Special Anniversary Edtion TII......thanks!

I never liked those metal Focal domes, and I suggest the worst pairing is with the Dyna-whatever Brian bought got on close out from Just Speakers in San Francisco.  A bad combo of too much upper mid energy + the metallic treble of the inverted dome, not good.

Sigh, still miss Just Speakers, all kinds of raw drivers and assembled speakers in the middle of the Mission district...loved to visit during the work day when I was in the neighborhood.  For a time Just Speakers displayed the Dynaudio Consequence:

Totally different subject related to the Mission and ordering food at Mexican restaurants: this is first hand from my closest friend, a Mexican American.  If/when making a special request at a Mexican restaurant (waiter/waitress of that descent), kindly "ask permission," if possible, with a friendly touch followed by "por favor?"  You'll get much farther than a threat to "get this right."

E.g.: my buddy and I visited one of a thousand Mission Mexican restaurants, this one near his apartment near Mission/Army (now Cesar Chavez).  I ask for "no queso, no crema, por favor?" w/a friendly touch and a smile.  My buddy commands with slight attitude: "...and no crema, no queso, none at all, OK?," unfortunately w/some horizontal hand motion for visual effect (the wrong kind).

Soon after my perfect plate arrives.  His plate is a sea of cheese and sour cream, and little if anything else.  He picks up the cheese looking for whatever he ordered, and I don't think either of saw it if it was in there.

Above is image of Taiwan clones of the original very good quality Japanese made JVC planar tweeters.  Less refined in performance.  Those look like heck on the back side, but if they function well, that's a reasonable cost I suppose, for spares.  Lacking extreme abuse (gross SS amp distortion) they seldom blew as Brian used them, padded down and 2nd order @ about 12 kHz.

The original JVC had "JVC" and part # stenciled on the magnet back side.

I'm curious about these.  Are the drivers original VMPS stock, or something aftermarket?  Just not sure, as Brian was constantly tweaking and updating designs.

OK....I can help on everything except the bass and mid bass drivers.

I'm virtually positive 99.999) all the mids and tweeters are absolutely OEM.  The three lower mids are Peerless poly cone/foam surround, for unknown reason Brian used a different mid up top (shared xo), being an Audax 13JVX2CA12 or similar # paper cone/rubber surround (the 130mm version of the 170mm mid bass John Bau used in the original classic Spica TC-50, identical motors....used full range in a proper small reflex enclosure, you'd not believe the bass punch and wham from that 130mm mid bass).

The domes are Audax, a little fuzzier sounding than the latter Morel MDT-29, but I still preferred the Audax.  The more domes the less fuzzy is the presentation, so you'll notice that fuzzy quality in the ST IIa/R.   If original, the planar is the original JVC, a killer super tweeter and great value for that era, latter replaced by a Taiwan clone, not quite as good but still fine for this purpose.

Early '00 and latter, Brian apparently offered a last series of upgraded bass and mid bass drivers.  I don't know about these , so no comment, suffice to say all bass drivers in the image did not exist when that speaker left VMPS.

That IIa/R is the very earliest, proven by the upper 15" PR slot.  It likely had all paper bass drivers.

The very very first ST IIa/R had two paper 15" PR, then Brian latter deleted the top slot leaving only one 15 down low.  Classic PR spec is as follows: active cone area x 2 = PR cone area.  Even 2x 15P is < the active cone area.  Sandy Gross's modern and well received Goldenear designs follow the classic theory.

Ignore the desire to turn up the mid/treble/planar levels to increase clarity.  The classic method is less output increases clarity.

I'm curious about these.  Are the drivers original VMPS stock, or something aftermarket?  Just not sure, as Brian was constantly tweaking and updating designs.
