Audio Room Design - OB
« on: 15 Jan 2018, 08:32 pm »
I'm considering a family-room/media-room addition on my house and did some searching here, but haven't located any longer discussions on room dimensions.

While I have a number of size constraints, I'd like to get a feel for reasonably good room dimensions and specifically acceptable room dimension ratios for OB designs, if any.

There's lots of general audio-room discussion on the web, but I'm not clear if there any OB-related issues that need to be considered, specifically for a pair of Super V's.

I'll be getting design-build estimates in the coming weeks, I have a footprint behind the house that could accommodate a 16-18W x 21L x 10-12H  room.   The W & H dimensions are somewhat flexible while length may not be.

Also..anyone have any thoughts/experience with using "Bolt Area" as a guideline for reasonable audio room dimensions?

The room itself will be used for 2 channel audio as well as TV-video.  I'm not overly concerned with focusing on home-theater audio goals/constraints..when in doubt I'd lean toward 2 channel audio needs/requirements rather than those for theater.  The room will also be a living space, not a dedicated audio-only room.

I've demo'ed open baffle speakers in many rooms from 13' by 19' to 19' by 39'.  What I learned is that the open baffle speakers really like depth and space behind the speakers. That really makes the sound stage deep, layered, really three dimensional. So my vote would be for a deep room.

Google "Golden Room Ratio" to get started determining the size of the room.

I like this article, Ch III talks about room acoustics.
