Artist with a Classical/Jazz overlap

I have picked up a copy of a ballet-- by Sidney Bechet  :o.  When I think of artist that are both jazz and classical, Gershwin comes first to my mind.  Who else is out there that blurs the divide between classical and jazz?

hmmm, that is a tuff one & one that will polarize many musicologists.
Certainly consider Keith Jarret's jazz group, Claude Bollings' many Jazzy
albums.  Yo-Yo Ma has had some unusually interesting fusion style albums.
Don't over look some Branford Marsalis collaborations. MJQ certainly pushed
the boundries.  It's a bit of a reach but Hot Club of France always reminded me
what a 18th century Quartet might sound like if it were transported to the mid 20th
century. Duke Ellington certainly bridged those worlds or genres.

The Gershwin Bros Porgy and Bess might fall into that category.  In any event, it is wonderfal listening.  You'll have to look it up.  My album is with Ella and Louis Armstrong and I think it's on Verve.

Mark-Anthony Turnage a contemporary British composer has composed and recorded at least two works in collaboration with John Scofield...most recent is "scorched" and the first was "Blood".Interesting efforts that are worth a listen. One of the most famous was "City of Glass"  composed by Bob Graetinger for Stan Kenton. The original Kenton recording is stiff and ponderous, but not without it's charm and adventure and later recordings of the same piece are a little more sucessful. The influence of classical music on Jazz has been there in every turn of the evolving art form from Bix Beiderbecke's "in a mist",evoking Debussy a little and Eastwood Lane alot to Eddie Sauter's arrangements for Benny Goodman and his adaption of the orchestral panorama for swing band.It just goes on and on, and i would guess you would have to include Tadd Dameron's "Fountainbleu" as well.It was not until many years after hearing, and loving that piece that i understood where it came from.I will not say here....go listen and leave your own impressions. Most Jazz artists dabbling in the Classical repetoire....kind of like Michael Jordan playing baseball.

Try the piano music of Nicolai Kapustin. This one has samples, but there are many other great discs to chose from if you want to try his music.

Nina Simone first trained for classical piano.  She often puts a Bach-like bit into her jazz.

Also, Sting has an album of Dowland songs.  It's a stretch for his voice, but the fellow on lute that accompanies is very good.

Here's a few that I can think of,

John McLaughlin -  Mediterranean Concerto (For Guitar and Orchestra)
Keith Jarrett - The Light. This has some very nice orchestral and chamber pieces.
The Celestial Hawk (Jarrett on piano with the Syracuse Symphony). I like this one quite a bit.
Terje Rydal -  Whenever I Seem to be Far Away (Südfunk Symphony Orchestra). Electric guitar, acoustic bass, french horn along with the orchestra.

Stravinsky wrote a bunch of jazz flavoured stuff. As did Milhaud.

Billy Mayerl blurs the lines between jazz, classical, and sort of a silent-movie style film score. Highly technical, sometimes heavily syncopated, yet very easy to listen to. I highly recommend the album "A Miscellany for Solo Piano".

I bought my copy here : http://www.amazon.com/Billy-Mayerl-Miscellany-Solo-Piano/dp/B001CZ6CLS/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1362541501&sr=1-2&keywords=billy+mayerl

some of the billy mayerl that i just checked out reminds me of gershwin.   a couple of those tunes i would like to hear how they develop.  "amber
leaves", and "forgotten forest, for piano".  especially those two.  btw, amazon doesn't have any sound samples up of this, but allmusic.com
does.  just key in "billy mayerl" in the search box and you'll see it come up.

stravinsky has been mentioned, along with milhaud.  i've heard the name milhaud mentioned before, i'm just not familiar with any of his work.
this reminds me to do a search.

debussy and ravel have influenced quite a few jazz compositions.

someone who's active today who i feel writes in a style that would be considered in this vein is billy childs.  check out his latest on his website,
billychilds.com.

and, going back a bit, i'm surprised andre previn hasn't been mentioned.
