Title: Issues w/ Shostakovich "1905" or 11th Symphony
Post by: S Clark on 8 Jul 2016, 01:02 am
I cleaned and put on my Everest version of the Houston Sym. Orch. w/ Stowkowski-  the first American performance... and it drove me nuts. :banghead:
I couldn't get the instruments in the correct places.  I thought I'd had an interconnect switched, but not so.  Changed my speaker arrangement, moved my listening position, all to no avail.  Went to youtube to see if a weird instrument positioning was common for this piece.
So is this a strangely recorded version? Do I have a tube in the amp or pre weakening?
Which vinyl version is more typical?  JimDGoulding, the expert on all things Shostakovich, where are you?  I need your expertise.

I briefly owned that recording on CD, didn't care for the interpretation, so I sold it on Amazon! I think your LP options are rather small. If a CD/SACD is acceptable, then I recommend Pletnev's on Pentatone, Rostropovich's on LSO Live, or Wigglesworth on BIS. Hope this helps.

Some historical recordings have these issues, I had a similar prob with Fritz Reiner on Tchaikovsky in a Living Stereo sacd.

Thanks, Toni.  Better late than never.  I'll start looking for a good copy.

Does THAT picture bring back memories!  I sold a few of those--and LOTS more fabulous EMIs--as Two Jeffreys Audio in the early and mid '80s.  It was fun...sometimes...while it lasted, but by the late '80s, ALL my LPs were gone!

I still love large-scale Classical music, but now the music is on SACDs, mostly, which sound EXCELLENT on my multichannel system.  That system has suffered, and is still suffering, thru lots of upgrades this summer.  New are the Oppo DP, the Marantz pre/pro, all the poweramps (now two 5-channel Butler 5150s), and ALL seven speakers (Vienna Ac. Mahlers, Revel C208 center, ELAC B6 surrounds and ceilings) but not SWs.
