File conversion

I'm a dinosaur who thinks burning an LP onto a CD-R is hot stuff.
A coworker asked me a question and I said I'd try to find out the answer.
Here is his dilemma:

The file I have is m4a and I guess I want to convert it to mp3 to put on a cd or play in one of the players I use for digital files
The problem with sending it via email is my phone won’t allow me to over 1000kb and it is a 2hr concert practically

Can anyone offer any assitance?  I don't even know what an m4a is!

M4a is a better file format then a mp3 is the short answer and associated with videos and music.

As to the the phone email I would plug the phone in a usb and then move the file.   Or a USB flash/thumb drive.   This step is the modern day burn a CD as lots of components allow  file transfer via usb ports.

I hope this sheds some light as this is a hurdle for both my daughter's and wife also.
