Jerry:
I have been the moderator of the "Unconventional Stereo & Pseudostereo" Forum on the Both Sides Now Stereo Chat Board, (
https://bsnpubs.websitetoolbox.com) (free registration required), since 2004. The chat board was started many years ago by Mike Callahan, author of the book
Oldies on CD. I have been researching and experimenting with various approaches for upmixing older mono source material to stereo for almost 20 years. One of the examples on the MEDIA pages of my website, the 1951 recording of
The Glory of Love by The Five Keys, was upmixed by me through the use of spectral editing and was released commercially in 2005 on a 4 CD (3 CDs plus a bonus CD) box set titled
Doo Wop Vocal Group Greats by Shout! Factory in conjunction with a PBS television music special. My friend Tom Moulton did the final stereo mix. More recently, I started a thread in 2009 titled
Basic Spectral Editing on the Both Sides Now Stereo Chat Board where I explained how spectral editing can be used to upmix mono source material to stereo and presented numerous samples to prove the point. Since then a number of individuals have started using spectral editing (in some cases in combination with sound source separation) to upmix a number of songs to stereo, many of which have been commercially released. The website is a labor of love that I pay for out of my pocket. I hope that you find it interesting! Chris
